Book A Poetics of Political Economy in Egypt

Download or read book A Poetics of Political Economy in Egypt written by Kristin Koptiuch and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Original in perspective, innovative in approach, this book investigates the changing relationship between Egypt's urban artisanry and the larger socio-historical transformations of the Egyptian economy. Focusing on two key historical periods in the early and late twentieth century, Kristin Koptiuch examines the political and economic conditions that affected the role of the artisan in Egypt over time. She is particularly interested in how the politics of representation in different modes of discourse -- colonialist, nationalist, developmentalist, ethnographic -- have alternatively cast Egypt's craft production as outmoded artisanry and as an ingenious, micro-entrepreneurial "informal sector." In light of the artisans' changing relation to the national and global economy, Koptiuch reads this figurative shift from "artisanry" to "informal sector" as a political allegory that contradicts the dominant narratives of Egypt's colonial modernity and neocolonial postmodernity. Attention to this allegorical figuration discloses what Koptiuch calls a poetics of political economy. Contrary to conventional positivist social science, realist ethnography, and empiricist history, this approach acknowledges the intricate mutual workings of meaning and material culture.

Book Agrarian Change in Egypt

Download or read book Agrarian Change in Egypt written by Samir Radwan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-30 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1986, Agrarian Change in Egypt based on extensive original research as well as field survey of eighteen villages, analyses and explains the changes in the agricultural sector in Egypt. It shows how various policies and other factors have affected agricultural output and how developments triggered by the ‘open door policy’ such as inflation, migration, and the shift in the pricing system have affected agriculture. The Egyptian experience is fairly typical of agrarian change in many parts of the developing world where government reforms in the 1960s and 1970s tried to combine considerations of efficiency and equity but ended up with stagnation. The Egyptian case therefore provides a good example of the general crisis in agriculture in the developing world. This book is an essential read for scholars and researchers of agricultural economy, development studies and political economy.

Book Inside Inequality in the Arab Republic of Egypt

Download or read book Inside Inequality in the Arab Republic of Egypt written by Paolo Verme and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2014-04-16 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book joins four papers prepared in the framework of the Egypt inequality study financed by the World Bank. The first paper prepared by Sherine Al-Shawarby reviews the studies on inequality in Egypt since the 1950s with the double objective of illustrating the importance attributed to inequality through time and of presenting and compare the main published statistics on inequality. To our knowledge, this is the first time that such a comprehensive review is carried. The second paper prepared by Branko Milanovic turns to the global and spatial dimensions of inequality. The objective here is to put Egypt inequality in the global context and better understand the origin and size of spatial inequalities within Egypt using different forms of measurement across regions and urban and rural areas. The Egyptian society remains deeply divided across space and in terms of welfare and this study unveils some of the hidden features of this inequality. The third paper prepared by Paolo Verme studies facts and perceptions of inequality during the period 2000-2009, the period that preceded the Egyptian revolution. The objective of this part is to provide some initial elements that could explain the apparent mismatch between inequality measured with household surveys and inequality aversion measured by values surveys. No such study has been carried out before in the Middle-East and North-Africa (MENA) region and this seemed a particular important and timely topic to address in the light of the unfolding developments in the Arab region. The fourth paper prepared by Sahar El Tawila, May Gadallah and Enas Ali A. El-Majeed assesses the state of poverty and inequality among the poorest villages of Egypt. The paper attempts to explain the level of inequality in an effort to disentangle those factors that derive from household abilities from those factors that derive from local opportunities. This is the first time that such study is conducted in Egypt. The book should be of interest to any observer of the political and economic evolution of the Arab region in the past few years and to poverty and inequality specialists that wish to have a deeper understanding of the distribution of incomes in Egypt and other countries in the MENA region.
