Women have, in the past, constituted a considerable precentage of the work force in this milieu, and continue to do so.Using specific case studies of historical and contemporary plantations, an account is given of the history of female labour, focusing on the colonial and post-colonial eras. The essays examine reasons for women's degraded status and emphasize, in particular, issues relating to migrant workers.The gradual move away from traditional family roles is, to some extent, reflected in variations in the position of the female plantation worker. However, where inequalities in class and status continue to characterize plantation life, capitalist and patriarchal control prevails.Both chilling and bracing, the sufferings of plantation labourers may seem remote to most of us, but they are still very much part of the contemporary world. Providing a close insight into the lives of the female protagonists, these essays have given an opportunity for their stories to be heard.

Book excerpt: In the earliest phase of export oriented growth, an ample supply of low wage labour gave Caribbean countries their competitive edge. Light, labour intensive manufacturing is dependent upon low wage, predominantly female labour and they do indeed provide an employment avenue for the high numbers of female unemployed. However, this source of employment by no means provides growth with equity, nor can it offer stable employment or opportunities for the advancement of women. Furthermore, demand in the global market is changing and manufacturing is moving away from labour intensity to improved technology and skill intensity. This paper will argue on two related issues. Firstly, as global demand is shifting away from low cost labour intensive goods and towards a manufacturing approach where high productivity and high technology provide the competitive edge, women are loosing their former foothold in the export manufacturing workforce. Secondly, due to the gendered nature of export manufacturing employment, in the early phase of industrialization, the scope for the transferral of skills to female employees is limited and therefore the employment options are constrained.
