Book Alternative Technologies to Replace Antipersonnel Landmines

Download or read book Alternative Technologies to Replace Antipersonnel Landmines written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-04-21 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines potential technologies for replacing antipersonnel landmines by 2006, the U.S. target date for signing an international treaty banning these weapons. Alternative Technologies to Replace Antipersonnel Landmines emphasizes the role that technology can play to allow certain weapons to be used more selectively, reducing the danger to uninvolved civilians while improving the effectiveness of the U.S. military. Landmines are an important weapon in the U.S. military's arsenal but the persistent variety can cause unintended casualties, to both civilians and friendly forces. New technologies could replace some, but not all, of the U.S. military's antipersonnel landmines by 2006. In the period following 2006, emerging technologies might eliminate the landmine totally, while retaining the necessary functionalities that today's mines provide to the military.

Book Human Resources Management and Ethics

Download or read book Human Resources Management and Ethics written by Ronald R. Sims and published by IAP. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Resources Management and Ethics: Responsibilities, Actions, Issues, and Experiences, explores and provides an in-depth look at the responsibilities, actions, issues and experiences related to HRM and ethics for individual employees, organizations and the broader society. Like other departments in the broader organization HRM professionals will need to increasingly demonstrate how they contribute to an organization’s ethical orientation and overall performance or success. While the ethical challenges, trends, and issues impacting employees, organizations and HRM professionals will continue to change over the years (consider the recent ethical challenges related cybersecurity and data breaches) the bottom-line of organization success is the clear reality that doing the right thing or institutionalizing an ethical culture or character is just as important to various stakeholders. The chapters in this book provide an updated, current and future look at the relationship between HRM and ethics and across various sectors or organizations (i.e. public, private, not-for-profit, academic, etc.). That is, this book discusses the ever evolving role of HRM professionals to include discussion of how the profession continues to take on more responsibility for developing and institutionalizing an ethical culture in their organizations, industries and the broader society. The book also contributes to the need for ongoing dialogue, discussion or insights offered by HRM experts on what HRM professionals and their organizations can do in the face of ethical expectations, challenges and scandals. In the end, the book is intended to increase our understanding of the ethical responsibilities, actions, issues and experiences that arise both within HRM and in HRM’s interactions with individuals and organizations.

Book Policing and Social Media

Download or read book Policing and Social Media written by Christopher J. Schneider and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-04-04 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates various public aspects of the management, use, and control of social media by police agencies in Canada. This book aims to illustrate the process by which new information technology—namely, social media—and related changes in communication formats have affected the public face of policing and police work. Schneider argues that police use of social media has altered institutional public police practices in a manner that is consistent with the logic of social media platforms. Policing is changing to include new ways of conditioning the public, cultivating self-promotion, and expanding social control. While each case study presented here focuses on a different social media platform or format, his concern is less with the particular format per se, as these will undoubtedly change, and more with developing suitable analytical and methodological approaches to understanding contemporary policing practices on social media sites.

Book excerpt: Each day, millions of consumers venture online to search and exchange product information and to seek out and share opinions. Electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) communication has been shown to influence consumer actions across a variety of industries (King, Racherla, and Bush 2014). A significant portion of eWOM occurs on social media platforms. Whether it is a status update to Facebook of an upcoming vacation, a picture of a laundry room makeover on Pinterest, or a YouTube video discussing the features on the new iPhone, consumers are turning to a variety of social platforms to make everyday purchasing decisions easier for themselves and others. Indeed, social word of mouth (sWOM)—a subset of eWOM—has incredible reach with the potential to influence over two billion active social media consumers. The purpose of this book is to examine the influence of sWOM and provide guidance on how to operationalize its growing power. The goal of this book is to bring together industry best practices and academic research to help construct social media content that speaks with your brand voice, stimulates engagement, inspires consumers to share (#share), and complies with industry and federal guidelines. Each chapter highlights a key area of sWOM that will further your understanding and provide actionable information to assist you in mobilizing positive sWOM for your company.

  • Author : Daniel Leonard Bernardi
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press
  • Release : 2012-03-12
  • ISBN : 0813553229

Download or read book Narrative Landmines written by Daniel Leonard Bernardi and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islamic extremism is the dominant security concern of many contemporary governments, spanning the industrialized West to the developing world. Narrative Landmines explores how rumors fit into and extend narrative systems and ideologies, particularly in the context of terrorism, counter-terrorism, and extremist insurgencies. Its concern is to foster a more sophisticated understanding of how oral and digital cultures work alongside economic, diplomatic, and cultural factors that influence the struggles between states and non-state actors in the proverbial battle of hearts and minds. Beyond face-to-face communication, the authors also address the role of new and social media in the creation and spread of rumors. As narrative forms, rumors are suitable to a wide range of political expression, from citizens, insurgents, and governments alike, and in places as distinct as Singapore, Iraq, and Indonesia—the case studies presented for analysis. The authors make a compelling argument for understanding rumors in these contexts as “narrative IEDs,” low-cost, low-tech weapons that can successfully counter such elaborate and expansive government initiatives as outreach campaigns or strategic communication efforts. While not exactly the same as the advanced technological systems or Improvised Explosive Devices to which they are metaphorically related, narrative IEDs nevertheless operate as weapons that can aid the extremist cause.

Book Journalism Ethics

Download or read book Journalism Ethics written by Roger Patching and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journalism Ethics: Arguments and Cases for the 21st Century explores the major ethical dilemmas facing journalists in the digital age. Engaging with both the theory and practice of journalism ethics, this text explains the key ethical concepts and dilemmas in journalism and provides an international range of examples and case studies, considering traditional and social media from a global perspective. Journalism Ethics offers an introductory philosophical underpinning to ethics that traces the history of the freedom of expression from the time of Greek philosophers like Aristotle, through the French and American revolutions, to modern day. Throughout the book Patching and Hirst examine ethically-challenging issues such as deception, trial by media, dealing with sources and privacy intrusion. They also explore continuing ethical fault lines around accuracy, bias, fairness and objectivity, chequebook journalism, the problems of the foreign correspondent, the conflicts between ethics and the law and between journalists and public relations consultants. Concluding with a step-by-step guide to ethical thinking on the job, this textbook is an invaluable resource for students of journalism, media and communication.
