Therefore, the analysis of how different urban forms, such as the compact city, shape mobility are not considered here. Instead, the book has four specific research objectives that structure this overview chapter and the national case studies presented in the remainder of the book. I. To analyze the relationships between migration and urban change. II. To analyze the spatial and temporal balance between permanent versus temporary populations in the core v ring v coastal zone. III. To analyse how human mobility shapes key aspects of urbanization. IV. To consider the main human-environmental conflicts resulting from human mobility. The final section reflects on the implications for human-environmental conflicts of the changing relationship between mobility and urbanization in the case studies.

Hence, while scientifically autonomous, the volume is a natural link between the different phases of analysis within SECOA, i.e. Work Packages (WPs) 1-5, and the interpretive and predictive values that are being drawn up by WPs 7 and 8. Within the overall scope of SECOA's research activity, this volume's task was to supply answers to questions that will undergo further study by research groups. These groups will subsequently have to create methods and tools to identify the most suitable policies to effectively manage environmental conflicts, use fragile and rare resources more efficiently, and develop administrative structures capable of dealing with the needs of a continuously evolving society (the wisdom stage). It was also deemed necessary to construct possible alternative scenarios in order to contribute to an enhanced vision of sustainable urban development in coastal areas (the understanding stage). The findings of the research discussed in this volume are to be used to understand the relationships between the variables collected in the previous phases (WPs 1, 2, 3 and 4) of SECOA.

Regimes of place equality are increasingly critical components of welfare states and territorial administration. The volume examines these regimes in a global sample of eleven democracies, including developed and developing countries on five continents. This book focuses on urban grassroots movements in post-socialist Czechia and their struggle against unprofessional and nondemocratic urban processes in their cities. It shows that in the context of neoliberal urban restructuring, weakly consolidated democracy, and corporate capture of the local state, urban activists often resort to entering electoral competition as the only efficient way of improving the situation in their cities. The book is based on four case studies from different Czech cities, narrating stories of activists struggling against a controversial flood protection project, the demolition of public buildings, an unhealthy land-use plan, arrogant development, and overpriced city halls. It offers valuable insight into the obstacles created by institutionalized forms of power abuse which urban activists must deal with and discusses the pro-democratic potential of urban grassroot movements’ efforts to overcome their limited ability to influence political processes via standard means of civic engagement and protest activities.
