Book Decentralized Employment and the Transformation of the American City

Download or read book Decentralized Employment and the Transformation of the American City written by Edward L. Glaeser and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the decentralization of employment using zip code data on employment by industry. Most American cities are decentralized - on average less than 16 percent of employment in metropolitan areas is within a three mile radius of the city center. In decentralized cities, the classic stylized facts of urban economics (i.e. prices fall with distance to the city center, commute times rise with distance and poverty falls with distance) no longer hold. Decentralization is most common in manufacturing and least common in services. The human capital level of an industry predicts its centralization, but the dominant factor explaining decentralization is the residential preferences of workers. Political borders also impact employment density which suggests that local government policies significantly influence the location of industry.

Book excerpt: "The movement of people and jobs away from city centers into increasingly distant suburbs represents a long-standing trend in metropolitan America. The ongoing decentralization of population and employment has implications for the overall health and productivity of metro areas across the country. While "people sprawl" has been well-recognized and documented, this paper focuses specifically on "job sprawl", exploring recent trends in the spatial distribution of employment in 98 of the nation's largest metropolitan areas and how those trends differ across major industries"--Intro. (p.2).

Book City Life Cycles and American Urban Policy

Download or read book City Life Cycles and American Urban Policy written by R. D. Norton and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: City Life-Cycles and American Urban Policy is an interdisciplinary study of differential urban development in the United States since 1945 that aims to place urban policy choices in historical perspective. The book discusses the issues and establishes a framework within which relevant quantitative measurements can be interpreted. The text also describes systematic empirical tests, which typically take the form of regression equations, and traces city population changes into two proximate causes: annexation and urban growth. The reasons for annexation contrasts among the nation’s largest cities; the second-city growth determinant; and the institutional explanation for fiscal differential among large cities are also considered. The book further tackles the issue of federal fiscal assistance to declining cities. Economists will find the book invaluable.
