Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practice-based learning—the kind of education that comes from experiencing real work in real situations—has always been a prerequisite to qualification in professions such as medicine. However, there is growing interest in how practice-based models of learning can assist the initial preparation for and further development of skills for a wider range of occupations. Rather than being seen as a tool of first-time training, it is now viewed as a potentially important facet of professional development and life-long learning. This book provides perspectives on practice-based learning from a range of disciplines and fields of work. The collection here draws on a wide spectrum of perspectives to illustrate as well as to critically appraise approaches to practice-based learning. The book’s two sections first explore the conceptual foundations of learning through practice, and then provide detailed examples of its implementation. Long-standing practice-based approaches to learning have been used in many professions and trades. Indeed, admission to the trades and major professions (e.g. medicine, law, accountancy) can only be realised after completing extended periods of practice in authentic practice settings. However, the growing contemporary interest in using practice-based learning in more extensive contexts has arisen from concerns about the direct employability of graduates and the increasing focus on occupation-specific courses in both vocations and higher education. It is an especially urgent issue in an era of critical skill shortages, rapidly transforming work requirements and an aging workforce combined with a looming shortage of new workforce entrants. We must better understand how existing models of practice-based learning are enacted in order to identify how they can be applied to different kinds of employment and workplaces. The contributions to this volume explore ways in which learning through practice can be conceptualised, enacted, and appraised through an analysis of the traditions, purposes, and processes that support this learning—including curriculum models and pedagogic practices.

Book The Economics of Cooperative Education

Download or read book The Economics of Cooperative Education written by Yasushi Tanaka and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-24 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A considerable number of higher educational institutions in North America, Oceania, and Europe, offer what are known as cooperative education, work-integrated learning, work placements, sandwich courses, or internships, to provide pragmatic experience to students, and its popularity is spreading to many higher educational institutions in the world. Alongside such development, the rising needs for theoretical research and objective assessment are felt among those academics and practitioners involved in these programmes. The book offers a rigorous theoretical framework based on the human capital theory of labour economics and econometric analysis, which are well-established concepts in the field of economics, with an objective quantitative methodology to analyze and assess cooperative education programmes.

Book The Effect of Cooperative Education on Starting Salaries Employment in a Position Related to Major and GPA of Engineering Technology Graduates at UW Stout

Download or read book The Effect of Cooperative Education on Starting Salaries Employment in a Position Related to Major and GPA of Engineering Technology Graduates at UW Stout written by Sarah L. Anger and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooperative education is the opportunity for students to engage in on the job experiences while relating it to their academic course of study. At the University of Wisconsin-Stout it is a growing program that bridges the gap between theory and practical hands-on experience to develop innovative students. Utilizing data from the Office of Registration and Records and Career Services this study takes Engineering Technology (ET) graduates who have completed a cooperative education and those graduates who chose not to participate in a co-op experience and compares their starting salaries, employment in a position related to their major and GPA. After reviewing the data on average ET graduates who completed a cooperative education experience earned $3,719.00 more per year than ET graduate who chose not to participate in a co-op experience. Likewise, ET graduate who completed a co-op were 12% more likely to receive a position related to their major verses those ET graduates who did not participate in a co-op experience. Finally, ET graduates who chose not to participate in a co-op experience had an overall GPA .12 lower than those ET graduates who completed a cooperative education experience. Cooperative education experiences encourage students to reflect on theory learned in the classroom and put it to practical use to solve and analysis problems encountered on a real world work experience. In addition, the experiences and knowledge the student brings back to the classroom to share with professors and students is invaluable.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The narrative portion of this report focuses on a study of Toronto's high school work experience and career exploration programs to examine perception of the programs by participating students, teachers, and employers. A literature review comprises the first part. The second section identifies the goals of the three types of work experience programs--cooperative education, career exploration visit, and work experience weeks. (Programs differ somewhat from programs elsewhere with similar titles.) Section 3 briefly reviews development of the instruments and describes the way in which respondents were identified (850 students, 52 teachers, 155 employers) and data were collected. Section 4 organizes results for the four programs investigated (cooperative education, career exploration visit, and business education and technical education work weeks) into two parts: program organization and operation, and meeting the program's goals. The discussion and conclusions section focuses on successes and failures of the program and includes suggestions provided by the three groups of respondents who viewed the programs as being successful overall. Appendixes, amounting to over one-half of the report, include the questionnaires and record forms and detailed tabulation of results for each program individually. (YLB)

Book The Relationship Between Cooperative Education Student Work Values and Work Site Manager s Referent Power

Download or read book The Relationship Between Cooperative Education Student Work Values and Work Site Manager s Referent Power written by Janet G. Spence and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to describe the relationships between: (1) the referent power of the work site manager, (2) student hours worked, (3) career objective match, (4) student/manager work value match and (5) changes in the co-op student work values. The dependent work value variables studied were: 1. satisfaction and accomplishment, 2. money and prestige, 3. contribution to society, 4. status with employer, 5. need for work, 6. avoidance, and 7. job advancement. A sample of 38 students volunteered for the study from a total population of 134 central Ohio, 12th grade, marketing education students. The Maryland Work Value Inventory (Mietus, 1977) and placement assessment instruments were administered to the subjects near the beginning and end of the academic year. Positive, statistically significant, correlations were found between the independent variable of manager2s referent power and the work values of money and prestige, status with employer, need and job advancement. A positive, statistically significant, negative correlation was found between student/manager work value match and the work value of contribution to society. It was suggested that this negative relationship might be due to the materialistic nature of the business and marketing co-op experiences. Based on these findings, it is concluded that the referent power of the work site managers correlated to small modifications in some of the work values of the 12th grade business and marketing co-op students. It is recommended that when developing co-op experiences for 12th grade business and marketing students it is not necessary to: (1) extend the duration of the co-op experience over 180 hours, (2) match the student2s initial work values to the work site manager2s work values, or (3) match the co-op experience to the student2s desired career objective. Recommendations for future research are included.
