Private Higher Education Institutions (PHEIs) in Malaysia are a destination for both local and international students, in which the focus is on the creation of knowledge workers in the country. The number of PHEIs and student enrolment increases yearly as spaces in the public universities is scarce. For quality assurance, high staff turnover has always been a concern in PHEIs. Hence, this research explores the factors affecting job performance and employee engagement for both academic and non-academic staff. A quantitative, self-administered questionnaire was employed in this research. 200 respondents from the top ten PHEIs participated in this study. Career development, employee engagement and work-life balance were found to have significant relationships with employee retention and job performance.

Previous research has demonstrated that job performance has been found as an antecedent for turnover intention within the overall industry and IT occupations. The purpose of this study is to determine if similar associativity exists between perceived job performance and turnover intention within IT professionals in higher education. The results of the research can provide relevant information for institutions seeking to develop employee retention plans with IT departments.

Apart from the government sector, in private sector employee retention is an even more serious problem as government sector employees are not easily willing to leave the organization because they have job security in government sector but in private sector employees can move easily when they get any better opportunity. The objectives of this study are to find out: How capacity development influences and helps in retention; how emplyee empowerment effects on retention; and how promotion impacts retention.

IT personnel are essential for higher education institutions to effectively integrate technology into their educational programs. These IT employees contribute to their institution's teaching/learning mission, while simultaneously supporting complex and highly visible administrative operations. Yet, all previous research regarding IT employee retention issues had only been conducted within corporate settings. To examine factors related to IT employees' retention within public higher education, an internet-based study was sent to IT employees in all four-year public universities throughout Michigan. The survey included questions within five overall areas (a) reasons to stay in their current position, (b) reasons to leave their current position, (c) information about former positions, (d) improvement recommendations, and (e) demographic information. Responses from 183 IT employees revealed such individuals stay in their current position because of flexibility and a combination of variables that include respect, supervisor's skills, department communication, training, and the potential to increase their salary. Key reasons IT employees consider leaving their current employment include increased stress, and a combination of variables involving a less relaxed work environment, concerns over health care, sick leave, vacation leave benefits, and limited job security. Key reasons IT employees cited for leaving their former positions were to acquire an advanced degree, job promotion, improved health care, vacation and sick leave benefits, positive co-worker relations, and a more relaxed or flexible work environment. Consistent with research findings within corporate settings, competitive benefits packages are an essential component for the retention of IT employees within higher education. Higher education IT leadership may be able to reduce employee turnover, and increase employee satisfaction and productivity, while reducing retraining expenses by incorporating strategies deemed important via this research.
