Book excerpt: Dans cette étude, nous avons analysé les relations complexes entre emploi féminin et fécondité dans deux contextes culturels différents, à l’aide de données rétrospectives recueillies auprès de trois générations d’individus âgés de 25 à 59 ans, en 2000 à Lomé et en 2001 à Dakar. Ces données retracent les itinéraires résidentiels, professionnels, matrimoniaux et génésiques des femmes. C’est à Lomé que la fécondité est la plus affectée par l’activité féminine. Mais dans les deux villes, une plus longue expérience professionnelle retarde l’agrandissement de la famille. En outre, si à Dakar, la fécondité influence significativement l’accès au salariat, c’est plutôt l’emploi indépendant qui est affecté par la vie féconde des femmes à Lomé. De façon générale, il apparaît à la lumière des résultats que les liens entre le travail et la fécondité des femmes africaines dépendent des caractéristiques spécifiques à chaque société dont les rapports sociaux de sexe et les rôles statutaires en jeu.
