Book excerpt: Mary Roach meets Bill Bryson in this "surefire summer winner" (Janet Maslin, New York Times), an uproarious tour of the basest instincts and biggest mysteries of the animal world Humans have gone to the Moon and discovered the Higgs boson, but when it comes to understanding animals, we've still got a long way to go. Whether we're seeing a viral video of romping baby pandas or a picture of penguins "holding hands," it's hard for us not to project our own values -- innocence, fidelity, temperance, hard work -- onto animals. So you've probably never considered if moose get drunk, penguins cheat on their mates, or worker ants lay about. They do -- and that's just for starters. In The Truth About Animals, Lucy Cooke takes us on a worldwide journey to meet everyone from a Colombian hippo castrator to a Chinese panda porn peddler, all to lay bare the secret -- and often hilarious -- habits of the animal kingdom. Charming and at times downright weird, this modern bestiary is perfect for anyone who has ever suspected that virtue might be unnatural.

Book Antarctica and the Southern Ocean

Download or read book Antarctica and the Southern Ocean written by Nicholas Golledge and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-06-26 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antarctica is our southernmost continent. It is nearly double the size of Australia. Antarctica is covered almost entirely by land ice called the Antarctic Ice Sheet and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. The Southern Ocean influences climate by taking up heat and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it in deep waters. The cloud processes and aerosols over the Southern Ocean are complex and are important challenges for climate models. To understand the climate of the past, polar scientists drill ice cores through the Antarctic Ice Sheet. The ice core is a powerful tool that we can use to determine how the Earth's climate has changed and the information provided by historical ice cores has become extremely valuable for predicting the future scenarios of our planet. This ice is the largest reservoir of fresh water on Earth. The Antarctic Ice Sheet flows down into the Southern Ocean where parts of it start to float. These large floating platforms of ice are called ice shelves. Knowledge of the sensitivity and interaction of ice shelves to changes in atmosphere and ocean is important to understand the contribution of Antarctica to global sea level rise and the Southern Ocean, and global marine ecosystems. If melted, the Antarctic Ice Sheet would be a major contributor to global sea level rise. In winter, the surface of the ocean around Antarctica freezes and sea ice forms. At the height of winter, the area of sea ice that forms is as large as Antarctica itself but it melts back to the continent every summer. The amount of sea ice that forms in winter and melts back each summer is different. We examine this annual fluctuation of sea ice area around Antarctica for indications of climate change. Sea ice provides important habitats for primary producers, such as sea ice algae, and Antarctic krill, a keystone species of the Southern Ocean ecosystem. Sea ice is also an important habitat for penguins and seals. This collection aims to inform young readers about fundamental knowledge and digested cutting-edge science that will help increase their understanding of Antarctica and its central role as a global climate driver. In addition to the Editors hosting, we would acknowledge the coordination and organization efforts of Pat Wongpan .

Download or read book Hey Daddy written by Mary Batten and published by Peachtree Publishing Company. This book was released on 2002 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An excellent introduction to the varied and remarkable ways animal fathers care for their young. In the vast animal kingdom, mommies are often solely responsible for the birth and upbringing of their young. But daddies can, and do, help in a variety of surprising ways. In this new natural science book for children, award-winning writer Mary Batten offers a fascinating and entertaining look at paternal behavior in the animal world. From birds and amphibians to small mammals and primates, numerous examples of males caring for their young are presented in accurate and clear language. Among the featured fathers are the blue jay, the marmoset and the beaver, who share parenting responsibilities with the mother, as well as several animal daddies (such as the seahorse, the penguin, and Darwin's frog) that perform more extraordinary roles. Finally, the human father is singled out for devoting the most time of all to raising his young until they can survive on their own. Factual information on animal development and behavior is provided throughout the text. Higgins Bond's realistic and detailed illustrations accurately depict the animal families in their natural habitats, and warmly bring to life the animal daddies interacting with their babies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apsley George Benet Cherry-Garrard has always dreamt of becoming an explorer. Cherry's luck, however, will soon change. Far off in the icy unknown of Antarctica, where temperatures plummet below –77°F, exploration is synonymous with a struggle for life. Frostbite, scurvy, hidden ice chasms, and packs of hungry killer whales are very real dangers. But even these perils don't prepare Cherry for the expedition he and two other crew members embark upon to collect the eggs of Emperor penguins. Along the way, he will face the elements head-on, risking life and limb in the name of science. Rife with captivating details of survival in an icy wilderness, and illustrated with dozens of photographs from the actual journey, this reimagining of the famous 1910 expedition to the South Pole, told in Cherry's voice, is an unforgettable tale of courage and camaraderie.
