Book excerpt: The present study was conducted to examine two potential motivators of prosocial behavior – empathy and fairness sensitivity – and Theory of Mind (ToM) in shaping preschoolaged children’s helping and sharing behavior. Empathy was measured by children’s expressions of empathic concern (EC) and personal distress (PD), with 190, 3-year-olds (M = 36.19 months, SD = 0.13), completing a battery of helping tasks across instrumental, emotion and altruistic helping conditions. Children’s fairness concerns, specifically fairness-related speech, were measured during a cooperative activity, which 168, 4-year-olds (M = 52.92 months, SD = 0.49) participated in, with sharing behavior being measured using the dictator game (DG) after the completion of the task. Results revealed that children expressing moderate levels of EC were likely to help faster than children expressing barely any EC. While children expressing barely any PD were shown to help quicker than children expressing some levels of PD. ToM did not moderate the relationships between EC or PD on children’s helping behavior in either of the helping conditions. Furthermore, our results indicate that fairness comments had to be made by both social partners in order to increase the likelihood of sharing. In test trials where only one, or where neither of the social partners made fairness comments, then this had no significant effect on sharing. ToM was found moderating the relationship between fairness concerns and children’s sharing behavior. Contrary to our hypothesis, children with low ToM were more encouraged by fairness comments than were children with moderate, or high ToM to share a higher number of stickers. Our results contribute to the growing body of literature aimed at understanding what motivates children to autonomously help and share with others.

Included is a description of the empathy program implemented to sixth graders, including the results of this research project conducted by a Graduate Student at SUNY Brockport. The definition of empathy, prosocial behaviors, and characteristics of bullies and victims was explored. The researcher's intent was to determine if empathy was a key component in maintaining children's positive relationships with each other, as well as decreasing bullying behaviors. This thesis also explored whether empathy had an effect on increasing a sixth grade child's instances of prosocial behavior. The researcher also attempted to determine if empathy could be taught to sixth graders through an eightweek character education program. Bryant's Index of Empathy for Children and Adolescence, developed by Brenda K. Bryant, and a Character Education Instrument developed by the researcher was used to determine if empathic tendencies were increased in sixth grade children following an eight-week character education program. The results of the study determined that empathy and knowledge of general character education traits could be taught to sixth grade students.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine whether dispositional sadness predicted children's prosocial behavior, and whether empathy-related responding (i.e., sympathy, personal distress) mediated this relation. It was hypothesized that children who were dispositionally sad, but well-regulated (i.e., moderate to high in effortful control), would experience sympathy versus personal distress, and thus would engage in more prosocial behaviors than children who were not well-regulated. Constructs were measured across three time points, when children were 18-, 30-, and 42-months old. In addition, early effortful control (at 18 months) was investigated as a potential moderator of the relation between dispositional sadness and empathy-related responding. Separate path models were computed for sadness predicting prosocial behavior with (1) sympathy and (2) personal distress as the mediator. In path analysis, sadness was found to be a positive predictor of sympathy across time. There was not a significant mediated effect of sympathy on the relation between sadness and prosocial behavior (both reported and observed). In path models with personal distress, sadness was not a significant predictor of personal distress, and personal distress was not a significant predictor of prosocial behavior (therefore, mediation analyses were not pursued). The moderated effect of effortful control was significant for the relation between 18-month sadness and 30-month sympathy; contrary to expectation, sadness was a significant, positive predictor of sympathy only for children who had average and low levels of effortful control (children high in effortful control were high in sympathy regardless of level of sadness). There was no significant moderated effect of effortful control on the path from sadness to personal distress. Findings are discussed in terms of the role of sadness in empathy-related responding and prosocial behavior as well as the dual role of effortful control and sadness in predicting empathy-related responding.

Democratic or authoritative socialization practices contribute to prosocial development. Parental support, warmth and sensitivity, parental induction and inductive reasoning, parental demandingness and control have been associated with empathy, sympathy and behavior in children and adolescents. Parental warmth/responsiveness can develop a secure attachment between the parent and the child. Securely attached children tend to be responsive to parental controls and more eager learners and prosocial during the socialization process. Parents may foster behavior in children by modeling and concerning for the needs of others. Parents may induce perspective-taking, empathy and sympathy in their children and adolescents by pointing out the beneficial or harmful consequences of their actions through inductive reasoning and explanations. Parental inductive reasoning and explanations can lead to empathy-based guilt in them by highlighting consequences of the deviating behavior in the children and adolescents for the victim. Children and adolescents can attend to and care about parental messages, internalize prosocial values of their parents, socialize to acquire prosocial behavior when parents behave warmly, responsively and supportively and use inductive reasoning and explanations for their children and adolescents in socialization practices.
