Why are some people always up and others always down? In his thirty-year quest to answer these questions, pioneering neuroscientist Richard J. Davidson discovered that each of us has an Emotional Style, composed of Resilience, Outlook, Social Intuition, Self-Awareness, Sensitivity to Context, and Attention. Where we fall on these six continuums determines our own “emotional fingerprint.” Sharing Dr. Davidson’s fascinating case histories and experiments, The Emotional Life of Your Brain offers a new model for treating conditions like autism and depression as it empowers us all to better understand ourselves—and live more meaningful lives.

Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ... The Undefinable. A FANTASIA. That certain Something. Ruskin. It was a hot summer evening, and I had gone into the studio after dinner to sit opposite my last-accomplished work, and smoke a cigarette to add to my joy in the contemplation thereof. It is a great moment even for a great artist when he can sit and sigh in solitary satisfaction before a finished picture. I had looked at it while I was waiting for dinner, and even in that empty hour it had seemed most masterly; so that now, when I may perhaps--if I apologize in advance for the unacademical vulgarism of the idea--be allowed to say that I was comfortably replete, I expected to feel in it that which surpasses the merely masterly of talent (to which degree of excellence ordinary painters, undowered by the divine afflatus, may attain by eminent industry) and approaches the superb--ecstatic. Well, in a word, if I may venture--with all becoming diffidence, and only, it will be understood, for the good-natured purpose of making myself intelligible to the general reader--if I may venture to quote a remarkable critic of mine, a most farseeing fellow, who, in recognizing the early promise of my work, in the early days when I was still struggling to scale those heights to which I afterwards so successfully attained, aptly described whatever of merit I had then displayed as "the undefinable of genius "--this was what I had come to recognize on the great canvas before me, to feel, to revel in, to know in the utmost significance of the term as something allcomprehensive enough to be evident to the meanest man's capacity in its power to make him feel, while yet remaining beyond the range of language to convey. I had sat some time, however; my cigarette was half finished; the enjoyable...

Book Emotional Reinventions

Download or read book Emotional Reinventions written by Melanie V. Dawson and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on representational approaches to emotion during the years of American literary realism’s dominance and in the works of such authors as Edith Wharton, Alice Dunbar-Nelson, W. D. Howells, Charles Chesnutt, and others, Emotional Reinventions: Realist-Era Representations Beyond Sympathy contends that emotional representations were central to the self-conscious construction of high realism (in the mid-1880s) and to the interrogation of its boundaries. Based on realist-era authors’ rejection of “sentimentalism” and its reduction of emotional diversity (a tendency to stress what Karen Sanchez-Eppler has described as sentimental fiction’s investment in “overcoming difference”), Melanie Dawson argues that realist-era investments in emotional detail were designed to confront differences of class, gender, race, and circumstance directly. She explores the ways in which representational practices that approximate scientific methods often led away from scientific theories and rejected rigid attempts at creating emotional taxonomies. She argues that ultimately realist-era authors demonstrated a new investment in individuated emotional histories and experiences that sought to honor all affective experiences on their own terms.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Emotional Development

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Emotional Development written by Daniel Dukes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-07 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emotional Development is a topic that embraces a range of disciplines, including, psychology, neuroscience, sociology, primatology, philosophy, history, cognitive science, computer science, and education. The Oxford Handbook of Emotional Development is the first volume of its kind to include such a multidisciplinary group of experts to consider this topic, and as such, provides perhaps the most complete examination yet of how emotions develop and manifest themselves neuronally, intra- and interpersonally, across different cultures and species, and over time. The volume is separated into five themes: macro and micro underpinnings; communication and understanding; interactive contexts; socialization and learning; and morality and prosocial behaviour. Each section includes contributions from researchers in at least three disciplines, resulting in a volume that is destined to provoke the interested reader into either purposively or accidentally discovering emotional development from novel and stimulating perspectives. The chapters are written to be concise in their overview and accessible to the researcher or intellectually curious person alike. The reader can enjoy state of the art critical analysis of emotional development from different viewpoints, which, whether dipped into casually or read as a whole, will provide the best view of not only what we know today about emotional development, but also where the future study of emotional development lies. The Oxford Handbook of Emotional Development is an original and important contribution to the literature in psychology and the affective sciences.

Book Emotional Amoral Egoism

Download or read book Emotional Amoral Egoism written by Nayef R.F. Al-Rodhan and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes us who we are? Are we born good or evil? Do we have free will? What drives our behaviour and why? Can technology change what it means to be human? In this thoroughly revised second edition of Emotional Amoral Egoism, Professor Nayef Al-Rodhan demonstrates the impact of our innate predispositions on key issues, from conflict, inequality and transcultural understanding to Big Data, fake news and the social contract. However, it is the societies we live in and their governance structures that largely determine how we act on our innate predispositions. Consequently, Al-Rodhan proposes a new and sustainable good governance paradigm, which must reconcile the ever-present tension between the three attributes of human nature (‘Emotional Amoral Egoism’) and the nine critical needs of human dignity. This book is a perfect resource for enlightened readers, academics and policy makers interested in how our innate instincts and tendencies shape the world we live in, and how the interplay between neurophilosophy and policy can be harnessed for pragmatic and sustainable peace, security and prosperity solutions for all, at all times and under all circumstances.

Book Shakespeare and Emotional Expression

Download or read book Shakespeare and Emotional Expression written by Bríd Phillips and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-30 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare and Emotional Expression offers an exciting new way of considering emotional transactions in Shakespearean drama. The book is significant in its scope and originality as it uses the innovative medium of colour terms and references to interrogate the early modern emotional register. By examining contextual and cultural influences, this work explores the impact these influences have on the relationship between colour and emotion and argues for the importance of considering chromatic references as a means to uncover emotional significances. Using a broad range of documents, it offers a wider understanding of affective expression in the early modern period through a detailed examination of several dramatic works. Although colour meanings fluctuate, by paying particular attention to contextual clues and the historically specific cultural situations of Shakespeare’s plays, this book uncovers emotional significances that are not always apparent to modern audiences and readers. Through its examination of the nexus between the history of emotions and the social and cultural uses of colour in early modern drama, Shakespeare and Emotional Expression adds to our understanding of the expressive and affective possibilities in Shakespearean drama.
