This course builds on basic crisis intervention principles taught in the Spiritual and Psychological First Aid course and other Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) core courses to effectively integrate these principles within ESC teams for appropriate care throughout the disaster continuum from the immediate to long-term recovery process. This curriculum seeks to define what is appropriate and effective emotional and spiritual care in a disaster setting as outlined within the foundational Disaster Emotional and Spiritual Care Points of Consensus and the accompanying ESC Guidelines documents created by the national committee of the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD).

In some cases, billions of dollars from public, private and charitable sources are invested to help communities recover. National rhetoric often characterizes these efforts as a "return to normal." But for many American communities, pre-disaster conditions are far from optimal. Large segments of the U.S. population suffer from preventable health problems, experience inequitable access to services, and rely on overburdened health systems. A return to pre-event conditions in such cases may be short-sighted given the high costs - both economic and social - of poor health.
