Book Analyzing Ambasz

Download or read book Analyzing Ambasz written by Emilio Ambasz and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architect, museum curator, and industrial designer Emilio Ambasz is renowned for projects that fuse architecture and landscape -- high-rise buildings enveloped in verdant screens of trees and plants, houses that virtually disappear beneath mounds of earth. His highly original work defies easy categorization and analysis, and Ambasz has himself presented his designs as springing from his deeply felt mythical and poetic desires, serving notice of his own uncomfortable fit with conventional critical categories. In this penetrating collection of essays, prominent scholars and architects take up the challenge and set about rigorously "analyzing Ambasz." In addition to exploring his architectural work, the authors examine Ambasz's innovative industrial designs, including the Vertebra chair and dozens of other ingenious objects. Ambasz's curatorial work, particularly the seminal "New Italian Design" exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, is also discussed in an effort to fill out a complex picture of the man. Completing the volume is Sorkin's interview with Ambasz and Emilio, the self-described visionary and pragmatic sides of the designer's personality. Photographs and drawings accompany this lively debate that dramatically expands an understanding of Ambasz and his work.

Book Steven Holl Architects Simmons Building

Download or read book Steven Holl Architects Simmons Building written by Todd Gannon and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2004-08-12 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The award-winning Simmons Hall, completed in 2002, is Steven Holl's 'vertical slice of a city', an urban microcosm on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus. Motivated by the sea sponge and the idea of porosity, Holl invents a highly innovative structure that inspires its residents and compels them to revel in the unexpected. Immense interior voids, irregular and arrhythmic geometrical holes that form unexpected public spaces, as well as extraordinarily adaptable modular wooden furnisings, create a kinetic work-in-progress to be dictated by one's experience of the space and the whims of its occupants. Holl, whose tactile architecture has been celebrated as 'buildings that satisfy the spirit as well as the eye', has channeled his love of sculptural shapes, details, and inventive and original use of light, space, color, and material in Simmons Hall to find its rightful place in the company of Alvar Aalto's Baker House, and Eero Saarinen's chapel and his Kresge Auditorium at MIT. [This book] features extensive photographic documentation by Andy Ryan of the construction and finished project. These images are accompanied by an exhaustive graphic presentation of sketches, model, rendering, and working drawings, interviews with Holl, and commentary from architects and critics that examine both the technical and cultural significance of this important structure"--Back cover.

Download or read book Steven Holl written by Steven Holl and published by Universe Publishing(NY). This book was released on 2003 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steven Holl is revered among architects and students for his quiet and consistent modernist buildings. His reputation among generations of students was cemented during his early tenure at Columbia University and his founding of Storefront for Art and Architecture. His Pamphlet Architecture series furthered his standing as a leader of the avant-garde. With his embrace of computer technology, Holl smoothly transitioned from the 1980s into the digital design era of the 1990s. At the same time, his practice expanded globally and his housing projects in Japan opened to international acclaim. Recently, the ultramodern design of his Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art earned high praise for its revitalizing influence on Helsinki's city center. Remarkably, this monograph is the only book available that documents Holl's full career, covering his early houses of the 1970s to his latest designs for museums currently under construction.

Book Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art

Download or read book Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art written by Thomas S. Hines and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive and fascinating look at the history of the Museum of Modern Art’s Architecture and Design Department under the leadership of the influential curator Arthur Drexler. Arthur Drexler (1921-1987) served as the curator and director of the Architecture and Design Department at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) from 1951 until 1986—the longest curatorship in the museum’s history. Over four decades he conceived and oversaw trailblazing exhibitions that not only reflected but also anticipated major stylistic developments. Although several books cover the roles of MoMA’s founding director, Alfred Barr, and the department’s first curator, Philip Johnson, this is the only in-depth study of Drexler, who gave the department its overall shape and direction. During Drexler’s tenure, MoMA played a pivotal role in examining the work and confirming the reputations of twentieth-century architects, among them Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Richard Neutra, Marcel Breuer, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Exploring unexpected subjects—from the design of automobiles and industrial objects to a reconstruction of a Japanese house and garden—Drexler’s boundary-pushing shows promoted new ideas about architecture and design as modern arts in contemporary society. The department’s public and educational programs projected a culture of popular accessibility, offsetting MoMA’s reputation as an elitist institution. Drawing on rigorous archival research as well as author Thomas S. Hines’s firsthand experience working with Drexler, Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art analyzes how MoMA became a touchstone for the practice and study of midcentury architecture.
