Book excerpt: When we come across a happy narrative, we love imagining ourselves living out that story as the main character, yet, when faced with tales of human pain or suffering, we often awkwardly shy away, offer quick condolences, and say “I Can’t Imagine”. Human nature is to relish success, whimsy, and tales of happy endings. But, by avoiding those “other” stories, the painful and uncomfortable ones, we often miss out on some of life’s most important lessons. I Can’t Imagine is one of those “other” stories that will take readers through a powerful journey about a micro-preemie named Emilia Quinn Sears, who was born during a pandemic, at only 22-weeks-old, weighing just over 1 pound, with the odds of survival stacked against her. Inspired by her parents’ personal journals, passionately written to Baby Emilia, this book will take you on an epic journey of loss, love, and resilience. By the end, you will be able to imagine what it is like to fight for your child’s survival in the NICU, ultimately losing your battle and subsequently watching your world get destroyed. You will also experience the beautiful lessons and raw power of purpose that can arise from some of the worst things anyone can imagine.

Though only a high school junior, Mina knows time is an investment, and she's putting all her capital into academics. Oliver, a child abuse survivor who grew up in the foster care system, is ready to burn down his old life and start from scratch-complete with a new name and emancipation papers-in L.A. When the two are thrown together through circumstance and develop an unexpected connection, they discover how hard it is to keep the past in the past. Love and Other Sins is an emotional coming-of-age YA drama about family, love, violence, and the residue of abuse set against the backdrop of contemporary Los Angeles. When Mina meets Oliver, you'll remember your own first love and just how fast it swept you under. What were the bonds that bound us? Was it purely physical attraction? Circumstance? Or perhaps it was a mutual gravitation toward inevitable pain. "There was something about her-her eyes. Well, not so much her eyes, physically, but more like what they said about her: she had this look-a kind of restless intensity." "It was intimate . . . a strange and beautiful feeling. We were breathing life into each other." Love and Other Sins is a moving story about what it means to be young and vulnerable in today's society. This young adult romance will make you laugh and cry and give you hope for tomorrow because there are people like Mina and Oliver who refuse to let themselves be defined by their pasts or circumstances. If you love reading books like Looking for Alaska or Thirteen Reasons Why, then this is definitely for you. Content warning: sexual assault, recollections of child abuse, discussions of suicidal thoughts, and mention of miscarriage.

Download or read book Linotte written by Anaïs Nin and published by HMH. This book was released on 2014-09-02 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “amazingly precocious” diary of girlhood in the early twentieth century is filled with a “special charm” (The Christian Science Monitor). Born in Paris, Anaïs Nin started her celebrated diary at age eleven, when she was immigrating to New York with her mother and two young brothers. The diary became her confidant, her beloved friend, in which she recorded her most intimate thoughts and kept watch on the state of her character. Offering an amusing view of Nin’s early life, from age eleven to seventeen, it is also a self-portrait of an innocent girl who is transformed, through her own insights, into an enlightened young woman. “An enchanting portrait of a girl’s constant search for herself . . . will delight her admirers as well as new readers.” —Library Journal “One of the most extraordinary documents in the annals of literature.” —Providence Sunday Journal “[The Early Diary is] not merely an overture to the great performance. It deserves our attention on its own as a revelation of the rites of passage of a young girl in the early part of the [twentieth] century and as an expression of the collision of cultures between Europe and America.” —Los Angeles Times Preface by Joaquin Nin-Culmell

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can you call it an office romance if we've never actually met? Sara has a kick-ass life. She has loyal friends, works from home, and sets her own hours as a virtual assistant. Perfect... Except that Sara doesn't actually exist. She's just a borrowed name I use when I'm hiding behind my computer screen. Because my real name - Andi Clark - has too much baggage attached to it. And pretending to be someone else is the only way I can earn enough to make up for the mistake I made and the lives I ruined. If I hadn't typed my new boss' name into that search engine, everything would've stayed on track. I would've kept imagining Hayden looking the same as I pictured all my clients - late fifties/early sixties, a little soft around the middle, and a lot more forehead than hair. Unfortunately, I couldn't have been more wrong. Seriously, how many VPs of billion-dollar companies look like they model underwear after leaving the office? Damn it, if I'd never found out what an amazing man Hayden is, I wouldn't want to cry every time he calls me Sara. But hey, that's life, right? And nobody's life is perfect. Actually... My name is Hayden Bennet, and my life is pretty damn perfect. I’m married to a beautiful woman, live in a luxury apartment, and am prepped to take over the multi-billion-dollar company my father built. Perfect... Except all of it is a lie. My wife is madly in love with someone else, my career is meaningless, and I’ve forgotten how to live, let alone be happy. Until I hired a new online assistant, I thought life was meant to be endured. It isn’t. It’s meant to be lived. Enjoyed. And yeah, loved. Without Sara, I would’ve missed all of it. It’s crazy. I’d give up everything I have to be with her, and I still have no idea what she looks like. Unfortunately, the only way to get what I want is for a lot of good people to lose everything. *This standalone workplace romance is a modern fairytale retelling, complete with a happily ever after. Along with a lot of snark, some angst, and a very noble, very honorable alpha male. I promise - Hayden doesn't cheat on his wife. He's too good to hurt and disrespect a woman like that. Trust me, you'll understand when you read the book. Now Available Darker Water (Once and Forever #1) Deeper Water (Once and Forever #3) Immaterial Defense (Once and Forever #4) ~ This highly-anticipated sequel to DARKER WATER is a standalone contemporary romance inspired by Sleeping Beauty. VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE is Hayden and Andi's story, and this is how their fairytale begins: Once upon a time there was a woman who made the mistake of trusting the wrong man. And that mistake led to another. And another and another, each more damaging than the last. But the woman was as ignorant of her mistakes as she was of the damage they caused. Until she was punished for them. Around the same time, but in a totally separate part of the city, lived a nobleman and his beautiful wife. Though their castle was the envy of all, its empty halls echoed of loneliness and regret. For the man had lived his entire life asleep, and both of them remained silent of who they truly were and what they truly wanted. And then one day, the woman entered the man's life and forced him to awaken...

Book excerpt: Emilia Stark never thought she'd become a celebrity by editing books, but she also never thought she'd be using magic to do it. Her clients' success, coupled with her own mysterious nature, have brought her nationwide attention as well as a waiting list that has some hopeful authors waiting years. Despite her fame, her methods are kept safe by the curious fact that every writer who has tried to expose her secret to the world has found themselves suddenly unable to speak. Outside her work, Emilia's biggest challenge is putting herself through school, where she gets into frequent arguments with the fictional characters in her reading assignments. She also struggles to manage her relationship with her opinionated former tutor, a man named Alexander Fox whose constant experimenting with magic trapped him forever inside a college-ruled notebook. Emilia's fame has brought her adversaries, most of whom are determined to figure out her secret at all costs, and most of whom she completely ignores. But when other people with magical abilities start disappearing around the world and threatening notes start appearing on her doorstep, Emilia begins to worry — especially once she realizes she is the final target.

Book excerpt: **"A renaissance story with modern sensibilities" Guardian ** "A gripping story of seduction and revenge" The Times ** The baroque era at the beginning of the 17th century: change and upheaval are undermining the certainties of the Renaissance. In northern Italy, amid political and religious dissent, Vincenzo Gonzaga, 4th Duke of Mantua, devotes himself to the pursuit of excellence and pleasure. He gathers to his court the finest painters and musicians. His composer, Claudio Monteverdi, creates his first opera, La Favola d'Orfeo. "A fine novel of suitable baroque intensity. This is historical fiction with an imaginative sweep" Daily Telegraph Clare Colvin's novel follows the Renaissance dream of Arcadia to its horrific destruction, drawing on letters and documents of the time to resolve one of history's most fascinating riddles. What was the reason for the ambivalent relationship between the Duke and his court composer? Why did the Gonzagas destroy themselves, bringing chaos to Italy? And what role did the seductive Isabella of Novellara play in their downfall? "This highly individual novel recreates its period setting with wit and grace" MICHAEL ARDITTI, Independent Books of the Year

Download or read book Urban Residence written by Christien Klaufus and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Riobamba and Cuenca, two intermediate cities in Ecuador, have become part of global networks through transnational migration, incoming remittances, tourism, and global economic connections. Their landscape is changing in several significant ways, a reflection of the social and urban transformations occurring in contemporary Ecuadorian society. Exploring the discourses and actions of two contrasting population groups, rarely studied in tandem, within these cities--popular-settlement residents and professionals in the planning and construction sector--this study analyzes how each is involved in house designs and neighborhood consolidation. Ideas, ambitions, and power relations come into play at every stage of the production and use of urban space, and as a result individual decisions about both house designs and the urban layout influence the development of the urban fabric. Knowledge about intermediate cities is crucial in order to understand current trends in the predominantly urban societies of Latin America, and this study is an example of needed interdisciplinary scholarship that contributes to the fields of urban studies, urban anthropology, sociology, and architecture.
