Download or read book The Teachers of Emerson Classic Reprint written by John S. Harrison and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teachers of Emerson The aim of this work is to show the essentially Platonic quality of Emerson's thought. It is often held that his transcendentalism has its source in the philosophy of Germany, and that his mysticism is an inheritance from the sacred books of the East. But a careful study has convinced the author that Greek thought has been the most important factor in Emerson's intellectual development. Beneath the surface of his days and years there ran a spirit of philosophic inquiry which was fed by repeated readings in the old philosophers of Greece. From these sons of light he drank in large draughts of intellectual day. The author has attempted to show this by a comparative study of Emerson and the Platonists. In his studies the author has been helped by the labors of Dr. E. W. Emerson, whose edition of the Complete Works of Emerson has afforded many valuable suggestions regarding Emerson's acquaintance with the old philosophers. George William Curtis said, A smile broke over his face like day over the sky, and, At Emerson's house it is always morning. How could it have been otherwise with a man who loved humanity; whose whole life was spent in making the world happier and better; whose every sentence was full of hope and sweetness and courage. Who wrote, To help the young soul, add energy, inspire hope, and blow the coals into a useful flame; to redeem defeat by new thought, by firm action, that is not easy; that is the work of divine men. And he was one of the divine men whose work in life it was to do this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remembrances of Emerson Emerson's life and the influence of his books make a large subject, and it would have been easily possible to have extended these pages to a much greater length; but I preferred to limit my effort and to condense what I had to say into a brief compass. I have an aversion to long, laborious and usually frigid biographies. Let them come from the heart and form sincere admiration, and who does not read them with sympathy? I prefer Xenophon's artless yet affectionate memories of Socrates to the voluminous records of Plato. It is not that I like the philosopher less, but the man, the citizen, the soldier, the humorist more. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. There is no stage or state of society or mode or action in history, to which there is not somewhat corresponding in his life. Everything tends in a wonderful manner to abbreviate itself and yield its own virtue to him. January Second. We have the same interest in condition and character. We honor the rich, because they have externally the freedom, power, and grace which we feel to be proper to man, proper to us. January Third. All literature writes the character of the wise man. Books, monuments, pictures, conversation, are portraits in which he finds the lineaments he is forming. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Emerson at Home and Abroad At last the day came when I stood at the door of Emerson. I had entered the Divinity College at Cam bridge, and carried a letter from one of his friends; but I was nervous, and it was some relief to hear he was not at home. His little daughter and son, how ever, brought me an invitation from Mrs. Emerson to return soon, and meantime they took me on a beautiful walk, - a walk amid apple trees, where we sat and told tales in a lovely Lost Bower. I was taken to Emerson by his children and gave him my note of introduction. He remembered, and said, Surely you are my Virginian correspondent. With that he extended his hand and welcomed me with a smile his smile, not to be lightly lost by one it has warmed. For me, who never before had seen a great man, who yet in my minority was cut off from every relative and had alienated every early friend, this wel coming word and smile was the break of a new day. I could not answer. Many years after I read that one in paradise was asked how he got there and replied, One day as Buddha passed by he smiled upon me. Twenty-eight years later, on that spot where I first met Emerson I parted from him to see him no more. It was with the old grasp of hand, and with that smile on his face to win which would at any time have meant to me success. It is before me now, and shall not be changed to a frown by any sentence in this little book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Vol. 2 of 5 It is natural to believe in great men. If the companions of our childhood should turn out to be heroes, and their condition regal, it would not surprise us. All mythology opens with demigods, and the circumstance is high and poetic; that is, their genius is paramount. In the legends of the Gautama, the first men ate the earth, and found it deliciously sweet. Nature seems to exist for the excellent. The world is upheld by the veracity of good men: they make the earth wholesome. They who lived with them found life glad and nutritious. Life is sweet and tolerable only in our belief in such society; and actually, or ideally, we manage to lire with superiors. We call our children and our lands by their names. Their names are wrought into the verbs of language, their works and effigies are in our houses, and every circumstance of the day recalls an anecdote of them. The search after the great men is the dream of youth, and the most serious occupation of manhood. We travel into foreign parts to find his works, - if possible, to get a glimpse of him. But we are put off with fortune instead. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Emerson: His Life and Writings That is always best which gives me to myself. The sublime is excited in me by the great Stoical doctrine, Obey thyself.' That which shows God in me fortifies me. That which shows God out of me makes me a wart and a wen. There is no longer a necessary reason for my being. Already the long shadows of untimely oblivion creep over me, and I shall decease for ever. By his holy thoughts Jesus serves us, and thus only.
