While the state has made improvement in relative democratic development and political stability, emerging security threats threaten the national peace, stable and democratic development of the state. This study sought to unravel the emerging security threats in Ghana which will enable and help the appropriate authorities in policy and decision making. Information from reports, website, textbooks, journals and other important documents was used. The study extablished that, emerging security threats such as chieftaincy, farmer-herder conflict, succession agitations, drug trafficking, electoral violence, vigilantism, terrorism, extremism, environmental security, kidnappings, among others have intensified the security alarms in the country. These emerging security threats undermine the stable and democratic development of the state. The study therefore recommended that: the government of Ghana must increase and enhance the number of check points in the country. The government of Ghana must also recruit more border patrol officers especially in the Ghana Immigration Service to patrol and secure the country’s borders and man all porous unapproved routes in the country. Moreover, the government of Ghana must provide appropriate weapons, equipment, tools and technology that will facilitate border management and increase intelligence sharing among appropriate security agencies in the country.

The Challenge of Stability and Security in West Africa critically examines the key drivers of conflict and violence, and the way in which they impact the countries of the sub-region. In addition to emerging threats, these drivers include the challenges of youth inclusion, migration, sub-regional imbalances, and extractives, as well as challenges related to the fragility of political institutions and managing the competition for power, reform of the security sector, and weakness of institutions related to land management. The book explores how the sub-region, under the auspices of the regional organization ECOWAS, has become a pioneer on the continent in terms of addressing regional challenges. The Challenge of Stability and Security in West Africa also identifies key lessons in the dynamics of resilience in the face of political violence and civil war drawn from CÃ ́te d'Ivoire, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, that can be useful for countries around the world in similar situations. Critical in cementing this conviction has been the realisation that developments originated from Arab Mediterranean countries and spread to the Sahel have now such a potential to affect Western security and interests as to warrant even military intervention, as France’s operation in Mali attests. EU and US involvement in fighting piracy off the Horn of Africa had already laid bare the nexus between their security interests and protracted crises in sub-Saharan Africa. But the new centrality acquired by the Sahel after the Arab uprisings – particularly after Libya’s civil war – has elevated this nexus to a new, larger dimension. The centre of gravity of Europe’s security may be swinging to Africa, encompassing a wide portion of the continental landmass extending south of Mediterranean coastal states. The recrudescence of the terrorist threat from Mali to Algeria might pave the way to an American pivot to Africa, thus requiring fresh thinking on how the European Union and the United States can better collaborate with each other and with relevant regional actors.
