Book excerpt: This book focuses on the dialectics between spatio-organisational gaps and local contexts that characterise cross-border investments. "Interspatial" investments – be it mergers & acquisitions (M&A) or greenfield investments – are usually characterised by what is referred to as "otherness", i.e. organisational and cultural distances of the firms involved in relation to their regional contexts. At the same time, economic, political and socio-cultural linkages are decisive for attracting cross-border investments to regions and for providing firms with conditions supportive of their market success. As a consequence of being locked into complex structures of proximities, cross-border investments are situated in contested terrain. This terrain triggers learning processes in both regional actors and investors, which can result in the convergence of mindsets and organisational issues. This book is unique in that it combines interspace (defined as the distance between the new owner and the cross-border venture), place (the target region), interpretation (perception and understanding of the investment by the actors involved) and context (institutions, actor networks and interaction), thus offering better understanding of recent processes of globalisation. Crossing disciplinary boundaries by integrating economic geography and management studies, the volume adopts an innovative and spatially informed perspective on foreign direct investments (FDI). This perspective will be of great value to scholars, students and practitioners. Book excerpt: This thesis analyzes the motivation and performance of 403 acquisitions made by emerging multinational corporations (EMNCs) in Western Europe and North America between 1994 and 2013. The findings indicate that most EMNCs were motivated to acquire in order to obtain access to the upstream and downstream know-how of their target firms. In addition, the thesis' event study results demonstrate that EMNCs on average generated value for their shareholders with their acquisitions over short periods around acquisition announcement. This result is particularly significant since similar studies on buying firms from developed markets have frequently come to the conclusion that acquirers destroy shareholder value.

The case studies reveal, that EMNEs acquire abroad to access knowledge such as brand reputation and technologies. As a result, the international value chain structure needs to be configured. A meaningful phenomenon of global competitiveness is the increasing amount of Emerging Market Multinational Enterprises (EMNEs) that have succeeded in the con- straining institutional home markets and are now participating globally due to foreign direct investments. Book excerpt: During the last three decades, the importance of cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&As) as a favourite top-level managerial strategy of multinational enterprises (MNEs) and national champions has increased significantly. The global value of cross-border M&As has grown from around USD 100 billion in 1990 to USD 815 billion in 2018, peaking in 2007 with over USD 1 trillion just before the outbreak of the global financial crisis. This development is not surprising, since the ongoing globalization and the changing global market landscape lead to more complex challenges for companies. In order to face the increasing intensity of competition that accompanies the global integration of markets, cross-border M&As constitute an appropriate way of maintaining competitiveness and creating added value. The acquisition of pre-existing foreign assets enables MNEs not only to exploit synergies and growth opportunities but also to overcome latecomer disadvantages. In addition, M&As offer a time advantage over organic growth strategies such as greenfield investments, which is particularly important considering the dynamic market conditions and the shortening product life cycles. This thesis examines the research question of which country-specific factors determine the volume of inbound cross-border M&As in developing economies. In general, the choice of a cross-border acquisition as an entry mode into a foreign market is influenced by three types of factors: (1) firm-specific factors such as prior acquisition experience, product diversity and core competences; (2) industry-specific factors such as technological, sales and marketing intensity; and (3) country-specific factors such as market size and institutional quality. While firm- and industry-specific factors also play a role in domestic M&As, country-specific factors are a peculiarity in cross-border M&As. According to the research question, the aim of this thesis is to identify country-specific factors that represent determinants. On the one hand, findings on country-specific determinants might be helpful to explain why some countries (e.g. China) receive more cross-border M&As than others (e.g. India). On the other hand, the results reveal which interests transnational companies pursue and how they change. Drawing on this evidence, policy makers and companies may be able to influence the determining factors in order to stimulate or impede inbound investments in form of M&As.
