Chemical pollution of land can make plant growth difficult and crops grown are often polluted and not suitable for consumption. Microbes have been used to degrade these chemical pollutants.

Plants have adapted to an incredible range of environment, and extensive researches on ecological and environmental plant physiology have provided mechanistic understanding of the survival, distribution, productivity, and abundance of plant species across the diverse climates of our planet. Ecophysiological techniques have greatly advanced our understanding of photosynthesis, respiration, plant water relations, and plant responses to abiotic and biotic stresses, from instantaneous to evolutionary timescales. Ecophysiological studies also provide the basis for scaling plant physiological processes from the tissue to the canopy, ecosystem, region, and to a large extent, the entire globe. We will highlight 1) recent progress in fundamental research, 2) applied studies aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture and environmental remediation, and 3) emerging biotechnologies that promote crop adaptation to climate change. Plants respond to various climatic stresses such as drought, salinity, elevated CO2, and extreme temperatures. These responses induce changes at the molecular, cellular, and physiological levels that restrict the establishment, growth, and development of the plant. Understanding these changes has become an important research goal due to concerns about the adverse effects of climatic stresses on agriculture sustainability, global food security, and even plant-based remediation technologies. Some beneficial soil microorganisms, such as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and plant growth promoting bacteria, are able to protect and promote the growth of their host plants by acting as bioprotectants (via induced systemic resistance), biopesticides (via antibiotic functions) and phytostimulators (via triggering hormonal signaling networks). Plant adaptation to various climatic stresses is dynamic and involves complex cross-talk within the regulatory network (e.g. transcription factors, kinase cascades, and signaling molecules). However, the detailed molecular, cellular and physiological mechanisms underlying plant–beneficial microbe interactions in climatic stress adaptation remain largely unknown.

Book excerpt: The potassium solubilizing microorganisms (KSMs) are a rhizospheric microorganism which solubilizes the insoluble potassium (K) to soluble forms of K for plant growth and yield. K-solubilization is carried out by a large number of saprophytic bacteria (Bacillus mucilaginosus, B. edaphicus, B. circulans, Acidothiobacillus ferrooxidans, Paenibacillus spp.) and fungal strains (Aspergillus spp. and Aspergillus terreus). Major amounts of K containing minerals (muscovite, orthoclase, biotite, feldspar, illite, mica) are present in the soil as a fixed form which is not directly taken up by the plant. Nowadays most of the farmers use injudicious application of chemical fertilizers for achieving maximum productivity. However, the KSMs are most important microorganisms for solubilizing fixed form of K in soil system. The KSMs are an indigenous rhizospheric microorganism which show effective interaction between soil-plant systems. The main mechanism of KSMs is acidolysis, chelation, exchange reactions, complexolysis and production of organic acid. According to the literature, currently negligible use of potassium fertilizer as chemical form has been recorded in agriculture for enhancing crop yield. Most of the farmers use only nitrogen and phosphorus and not the K fertilizer due to unawareness that the problem of K deficiency occurs in rhizospheric soils. The K fertilizer is also costly as compared to other chemical fertilizers.
