Book The Power of Information Networks

Download or read book The Power of Information Networks written by Lei Guo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The news media have significant influence on the formation of public opinion. Called the agenda-setting role of the media, this influence occurs at three levels. Focusing public attention on a select few issues or other topics at any moment is level one. Emphasizing specific attributes of those issues or topics is level two. The Power of Information Networks: The Third Level of Agenda Setting introduces the newest perspective on this influence. While levels one and two are concerned with the salience of discrete individual elements, the third level offers a more comprehensive and nuanced perspective to explain media effects in this evolving media landscape: the ability of the news media to determine how the public associates the various elements in these media messages to create an integrated picture of public affairs. This is the first book to detail the theoretical foundations, methodological approaches, and international empirical evidence for this new perspective. Cutting-edge communication analytics such as network analysis, Big Data and data visualization techniques are used to examine these third-level effects. Diverse applications of the theory are documented in political communication, public relations, health communication, and social media research. The Power of Information Networks will interest scholars, students and practitioners concerned with the media and their social and cultural effects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shines a spotlight on software-centric networks and their emerging service environments. The authors examine the road ahead for connectivity, for both humans and 'things', considering the rapid changes that have shaken the industry. The book analyses major catalytic shifts that are shaping the communications world: softwarization, virtualization, and cloud computing. It guides the reader through a maze of possible architectural choices, driven by discriminating and sometimes conflicting business considerations. The new ICT capabilities lead us toward smarter environments and to an ecosystem where applications are backed up by shared networking facilities, instead of networks that support their own applications. Growing user awareness is a key driver towards the softwarization process. Softwarization disrupts the current status quo for equipment, development, networks, operations and business. It changes radically the value chain and the involved stakeholders. The dilemma is between a 'slow burn' traditional step-by-step approach and a bold transformation of the whole infrastructure and business models. This book is essential reading for those seeking to build user-centric communication networks that support independent agile and smart applications. “The book gives an insightful account of modern telecom networks, pinpointing the radical transformations of the last 20 years. This is the perfect read for those who are interested in the grand challenges of networks and in the socio-economic reasons why the telecom industry to embrace the Internet of Things and cyber-physical systems.” Prof. Antonio Liotta, Eindhoven University of Technology “This book fulfills an urgent need to thoroughly analyze the entanglement of network and software architectures by taking into account the increasing softwarization. It highlights important issues behind today’s business models and opens the road for sustainable future approaches to provide user appreciated valuable services.” Dr. Eng. Hendrik Berndt, former CTO of NTT DOCOMO Communications Laboratories Europe

Book The Economics of Information Networks

Download or read book The Economics of Information Networks written by Cristiano Antonelli and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1992 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provided in this book is a penetrating analysis of the broad array of the changes that generation, introduction and diffusion of a wave of radical innovations such as new information technologies and advanced telecommunications produce on industrial structures, corporate organization and firms behavior. The major contribution of the book lies in highlighting the role of factors such as technological, pecuniary, adoption, demand and network factors as a general conceptual framework for analysing technological change. Building on this theoretical framework, the book shows how cooperation among firms emerges as the distinctive feature of the new models of industrial organization. Interdependence between firms in fact is more and more shaped by networks of complementarities, localized spillovers and learning opportunities. In the conclusion the policy implications for assessing the evolution of network technologies with special reference to advanced telecommunications are consequently analyzed and developed.

Book Collaborative Networked Organizations

Download or read book Collaborative Networked Organizations written by Luis M. Camarinha-Matos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-04-10 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A research agenda for collaborative networks Purpose. Many practical application experiments and pilot cases nowadays provide evidence on what works and what still remains as a challenge for collaborative networked organizations (CNOs). The fast evolution of the information and communication technologies and in particular the so-called Internet technologies, also represents an important motivator for the emergence of new forms of collaboration. However, most efforts in this area are highly fragmented, considering only some partial facets and not a holistic perspective that would be required. We are therefore at a point in which it is necessary to define much more consolidated and sustainable research strategies for a second phase of research and development in this area. This book addresses the main disciplines involved in CNOs. It further synthesizes the views and opinions expressed by a large number of visionaries from the main disciplines involved in CNOs, and offers a comprehensive set of recommendations for the establishment of a research agenda on collaborative networks. As recognized experts in their specific areas, different authors in this book have presented work that is backed by a large number of research results, each focusing on specific facets of collaborative networks, and coming out of a large number of international and national projects.

Book Networks Business Groups and Corporate Governance in Emerging Financial Markets

Download or read book Networks Business Groups and Corporate Governance in Emerging Financial Markets written by Michael Charles Siemon and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chapter 2: Business groups are an essential feature of economic and social organization across the world. As such, they provide a compelling empirical and theoretical tool for improving our understanding of the ownership and control of organizations outside of the Anglo-American tradition. However, widely incorporating business groups into analyses of regions like the Middle East has been limited by the availability of information on group membership. This paper seeks to advance the comparative study of corporate governance by demonstrating a method for inferring these groups with data on director-firm and ownership networks of publicly traded companies using data for 1336 listed firms from 12 Arab countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Group-level measures are then calculated based on information aggregated from firms affiliated with each potential group. These data are used to support the validity of the communities by showing that---based on scores of family influence, geographic heterogeneity, and government ownership---it is possible to identify groups corresponding to one of these specific and measurable axes of solidarity. Chapter 3: Although business groups have been intensely studied in regions like Latin America and East Asia, the literature on the Middle East and North Africa is relatively less developed; the sparsity of this research is a pressing concern because of the variety of ways in which business groups have been shown to influence the political allocation of economic resources in these other parts of the world. This study presents evidence for the value-relevance of family business groups, government ownership, and other inter-firm relationships among 1110 publicly traded firms in 12 countries in the Middle East and North Africa. Due to the difficulty in obtaining direct observations of business group membership, business groups are inferred with methods from network analysis. Next, I apply a Bayesian multilevel model to estimate the associations between group-comembership(as well as other relationships), and pairwise stock returns correlations. Using the results of the model, I perform an exploratory analysis of the correlations between exchange-level attributes and estimated cofficient values, finding that, despite the small number of exchanges, minority-investor protections appear to be associated with stronger value-relevance of business groups. Chapter 4: We use a novel data set of the outcomes of 18125 loan guarantee transactions attempted by Chinese public firms between 2008 and 2015 to study banks' reactions to related party transactions in the context of ongoing marketization reforms. We find that guaranteed loans with better governed guarantors from more marketized provinces are more likely to succeed, that the influence of political ties is contingent on the ownership structure of the guarantor, and that the embeddedness of the transaction in multiplex relationships between the guarantor and bank increases the likelihood of approval.

Book Smart Business Networks

Download or read book Smart Business Networks written by Peter H.M. Vervest and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists from management and strategy, information systems, engineering and telecommunications have discussed a novel concept: Smart Business Networks. They see the future as a developing web of people and organizations, bound together in a dynamic and unpredictable way, creating smart outcomes from quickly (re-)configuring links between actors. The question is: What should be done to make the outcomes of such a network 'smart', that is, just a little better than that of your competitor? More agile, with less pain, with more return to all the members of the network, now and over time? The technical answer is to create a 'business operating system' that should run business processes on different organisational platforms. Business processes would become portable: The end-to-end management of processes running across many different organizations in many different forms would become possible. This book presents you the outcomes of an energizing and new direction in management science.
