Next, a paper which has been used for curriculum design discusses the fact that every major academic discipline contains concepts relevant to preparedness education. This is followed by an outline of a manual for establishing emergency preparedness courses at the college level for teacher training and includes information such as necessary administrative details, checklists, public relations, and fee details. Book Emergency Preparedness Curriculum

Download or read book Emergency Preparedness Curriculum written by Sallie Johnson Shipman and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the disaster nursing literature reviewed echoes the need for development of a disaster content in nursing curriculum (Duarte & Haynes, 2006; Kahalaieh, Bond, & Alasad, 2012; Littleton-Kearney & Slepski, 2008; Smith, 2007). There is continued debate over emergency preparedness (EP) content that should be included in the curriculum, where it fits, who teaches it, and what clinical experiences are needed to prepare nurses for the future (Duarte & Haynes, 2006; Kahalaieh et al., 2012; Littleton-Kearney & Slepski, 2008; Slepski, 2007; Smith, 2007). The purpose of this study is to examine the lived experiences of nurses first time responding to a civilian disaster response in shelters or temporary community medical clinics in an attempt to identify the essential knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to disaster victims. The theoretical framework for this study was the theory of novice to expert, experiential learning, clinical reasoning, and using real life situations to develop the student's sense of salience by Benner et al. (1996, 2009; 2010). This study utilized the narrative inquiry to explore the phenomena of nurses' experiences in a disaster for the first time. There were several new findings revealed in this study: lack of prior knowledge of how to volunteer during a disaster response; none of the nurse responded directly during the acute mass casualty phase of the disaster and described their work as "like a clinic"; a majority noted previous experience in mass casualty exercise did not help them with their actual response in the community; specific assessment skills needed to conduct an assessment on the disaster victim in the community setting; and the use of inconsistent and outdated EP terminology in undergraduate textbooks. In light of these new findings, I attempted to directly address these gaps during the development of proposed Model for Level One: Basic Nursing Disaster Curriculum which is included in the discussion.

Book Simulation and Game Based Learning in Emergency and Disaster Management

Download or read book Simulation and Game Based Learning in Emergency and Disaster Management written by Drumhiller, Nicole K. and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-04-02 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simulation and game-based learning are essential applications in a learning environment as they provide learners an opportunity to apply the course material in real-life scenarios. Introducing real-life learning allows the learner to make critical decisions at different points within the simulation providing constructive education that leads to a cognitive understanding of the material. The use of simulations provides the learner with the ability to cognitively store and recall learning in real-life experiences. Therefore, it is crucial to not only provide course material but to have students apply what they have learned in simulations that replicate real-life scenarios. These learned skills are essential for students to be marketable and thrive in a career field where decision making, problem solving, and critical thinking are job requirements. Simulation and Game-Based Learning in Emergency and Disaster Management is a cutting-edge research book that examines the best practices and holistic development when it comes to simulation learning within emergency and disaster management as well as global security. Drawing upon the neuroscience of learning, classroom instruction can be enhanced to incorporate active-experiential learning activities that positively impact a learner with long-term information retention. Each simulation project is carried out in different environments, with different goals in mind, and developed under various constraints. For these reasons, this book will provide insight into the simulation planning and development process, provide examples of online simulations and game-based learning activities, and provide insight on simulation development and implementation that can be used across disciplines in educational and training settings. As such, it is ideal for academicians, instructional designers, curriculum designers, education professionals, researchers, and students.
