Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 911 Dispatch: "911, what's your emergency?" Caller: "What were the winning numbers for the Evening Pick Four today?" Lauded as the "911 poster child" by Katie Couric, former Saturday Night Live writer Leland Gregory takes us back to where the funny all began. From presidential philosophizing and political pandering to foolish felons and office idiots, Leland Gregory generates side-splitting laughter by chronicling the worst of human nature. Gregory takes us back to where all the laughs began by updating his 911 cult classic with more than 150 new tales of bizarre but true 911 calls such as: .911: "Do you know a good stain remover?" .911 Report: Person answered "no" to the question: "Are you conscious?" .911 Report: Man called and requested dispatcher call his wife to let her know he's on his way home and that she shouldn't yell at him.

Book 9 1 1 WHAT IS YOUR EMERGENCY

Download or read book 9 1 1 WHAT IS YOUR EMERGENCY written by Lucia - Retired Dispatcher #160 and published by Author House. This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains actual 911 and non-emergency calls that came into the San Diego Police Department Communications Division during my 19 years working as a Police 911 Dispatcher. This book represents the calls received as accurately as possible. I did not embellish them to make the calls funnier or more exciting. These are actual calls, often unbelievable, but they are real calls. This book is a way for me to portray the "real world" life of a 911 dispatcher. Some people may not understand why or how we can make light of some of the calls in this book. You may fall into that category making this book not your cup of tea. If however, you can approach this book with an open mind, and a light heart, you may gain a different perspective about 911 dispatchers then you had before. Of course, the bulk of calls coming in were true emergencies that would not be appropriate for this book. I chose mostly, the light hearted calls that would make you come away from the book with a smile, instead of a heavy heart. The Dark Side Chapter is the only chapter in this book with samples of the more serious, violent type of calls we get on a daily basis. Many of you may be amazed by the sub culture out there, and how they live on a day to day basis. Many of these calls may shock you, and have you scratching your head thinking....OMG really?!! I took my job very seriously, and would never willingly jeopardize the confidentiality, or privacy of anybody who asked for my help. Therefore, I did not use real personal names or addresses from any callers in this book without their consent. Any names or a personal address used in this book that may sound familiar is pure coincidence. I hope you enjoy this book.

Book Emergency Communications

Download or read book Emergency Communications written by Linda K. S. Moore and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's 911 system is built on an infrastructure of analog technology that does not support many of the features that most Americans expect are part of an emergency response. Efforts to splice newer, digital technologies onto this aging infrastructure have created points of failure where a call can be dropped or misdirected, sometimes with tragic consequences. Callers to 911, however, generally assume that the newer technologies they are using to place a call are matched by the same level of technology at the 911 call center. This is not the case. For example, except for some work-around solutions, Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) -- the call centers -- cannot receive text messages. Delays in moving calls from digital to analog mode add life-threatening seconds to the completion of a 911 call. Information about a caller's location may not be accurate, especially in the case of wireless calls. Technology to supply accurate location information for wireless calls is useless unless the systems receiving and processing the call have matching capability. Modernizing the system to provide the quality of service that approaches the expectations of its users will require investments in new technologies. The general consensus is that these new technologies, collectively referred to as Next Generation 911 or NG9-1-1, should incorporate Internet Protocol (IP) networks and standards. An IP-based emergency communications network that supports 911 will facilitate interoperability and system resilience; improve connections between 911 call centers, emergency responders, and alert and warning systems; provide more robust capacity; and offer flexibility to receive calls for help in any format. Recognizing the importance of providing effective 911 service, Congress has passed three major bills supporting improvements in the handling of 911 emergency calls.

Book From Capes to Aprons 911 Emergency Dispatchers and Their Amazing Stories

Download or read book From Capes to Aprons 911 Emergency Dispatchers and Their Amazing Stories written by Missy Birnell Haston and published by From Capes to Aprons. This book was released on 2021-10-20 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Capes to Aprons is a collection of short stories from the dispatchers who actually took these sometimes bizarre, funny and very disturbing 911 calls. Because of the high stress of this job, dispatchers and emergency service personnel can turn to food for comfort, along with having each other to talk out our stressful calls. My book includes stories and recipes from real 911 dispatchers with some bonus stories of a retired police officer and retired firefighter. Communication centers across the country operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Dispatchers stand ready to receive calls from citizens, visitors, and anyone needing some form of assistance. Whether it's for simple information or a life-threatening traumatic emergency situation, they handle them all. Dispatchers in Hamilton County are highly trained professionals who operate complex 800-megahertz radio technology systems - allowing them to maintain critical communications with every emergency responder in the county and surrounding counties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "At a pace matching the flashing lights on a 911 console, Caroline Burau puts us in the hot seat and shows us the madness, the sadness, and the gallows humor of a profession that serves and protects in ways we never dream. And by telling us what goes on when the microphone is silent, she has taken the voice on the radio and given it heart." Michael Perry, author of Population 485 and Truck: A Love Story "A witty, gritty look at life on the receiving end of our cries for help." Reader's Digest (Editor's Choice) You answer a call from a fourteen-year-old boy asking for someone to arrest his mother, who is smoking crack in their bathroom. You talk with him until the cops arrive, making sure there are no weapons around and learning that his favorite subject in school is lunch. Five minutes later, you have to deal with someone complaining about his neighbor's clarinet practice. What is it like to be on the receiving end of desperate calls for help . . . every day? Caroline Burau, a former newspaper reporter and nursing student who couldn't stand the sight of blood, takes a job as an emergency dispatcher because she likes helping people. But on-the-job training at the comm center proves to be more than she bargained for. As she adjusts to a daily life of catastrophe and comedy, domestics and drunks, cops and robbers, junk food and sarcasm, lost cats and suicides, she discovers that crisis can become routine, that coworkers can be mean--that she must continue to care and, at times, learn how to let go. "The day may come when I have to dial 911. I hope to God that the person who answers is Caroline Burau or someone like her. Funny, honest, and elegantly simple, this book left me with a sense of grace and hope."--Alison McGhee, author of Shadow Baby, Rainlight, Was It Beautiful? and Falling Boy Caroline Burau is a 911 dispatch operator for the police and fire departments in White Bear Lake, Minnesota.

Book Tips from an Emergency Dispatcher

Download or read book Tips from an Emergency Dispatcher written by Laura Smith and published by . This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a must read for anyone who might have to call 911 for help someday. You may believe that reporting an emergency is as simple as dialing 911, telling the dispatcher what the emergency is and where it is occurring, and then help will be sent without delay. The good news is, it does work that way most of the time; the bad news is, it doesn't always work that way. When there is miscommunication on the part of the caller, the dispatcher, or both, dire consequences can, and do, occur. This book will explain the important role the caller plays in relaying vital information to a dispatcher. This is explained through many practical and realistic examples, showing important "do's" and "don'ts". The reader will understand the best way to provide the dispatcher with the specific details of the emergency. You will also learn how to relay sensitive and relevant information that could make a big difference in the outcome of a call; everything from the quick apprehension of a suspect, to preventing further trauma to a victim, to increasing the safety of the officers. This book was written by a dispatcher with over 25 years of experience handling 911 calls. The goal of the book was to help the reader become more familiar with the 911 call taking process. You will learn what questions the dispatcher will ask, and why, and what you can do to ensure your call is quickly and properly prioritized. You will learn the best way to provide suspect, vehicle and weapon descriptions, and how to overcome some of the barriers in the communication process. There is also vital information everyone should know about the limitations of using a cell phone to call 911 during an emergency. Don't be caught off guard by the mistaken notion that the dispatcher will know exactly where you are calling from if you can't stay on the line for some reason, as this is not always the case. Reading this book well in advance of having to call 911 is the best way you can be prepared during an actual emergency situation.

Book The Community 911 System

Download or read book The Community 911 System written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis will identify best practices from other localities around the country and propose a set of possible solutions for Harrisonburg EMS. Because non-emergency 911 calls use resources, finances, equipment and time that contribute to the burden that the emergency system faces, communities have adopted programs that aim to ease this burden by limiting the amount of ambulance responses to calls that turn out to be non-emergency. It is not only in Harrisonburg, but across the country that "providers are overwhelmed with evaluation, treatment and transportation of patients who have minor medical conditions but who have nowhere else to turn or who believe that they are entitled to call" (Morehead Taxi Voucher Guidelines 2016) Some of these programs, particularly those dealing with frequent flyers, could be adopted in Harrisonburg.
