Book excerpt: This assessment of the provisioning of water during and after national or civil exergencies has four goals: (1) to determine if emergencies can result in water shortages, (2) to determine if the unavailability of water can seriously impact communities, (3) to determine if the understanding of water shortage impacts has been incorporated into the programs of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and (4) to suggest research needs regarding emergency water preparedness, consistent with the interests of FEMA. Case histories and the discussions of emergency preparedness needs of utilities contained in the literature suggest that several modern water systems. Major emergencies can cause flow reductions resulting in severe impacts to communities including the inability to effectively control the spread of fire, health threats from sewage not transported to treatment facilities, loss of income, from sewage not transported to treatment facilities, loss of income, business disruption, increased water system repair and administration costs, loss of water revenues, and possible relocation of the affected population. Book Emergency Management Threats and Hazards

Download or read book Emergency Management Threats and Hazards written by Michael Prasad and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-09-04 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emergency Management Threats and Hazards: Water is a resource guidebook, which bridges the work of the emergency management practitioners and academic researchers, specifically for water-related incidents. Practitioners typically follow a disaster phase cycle of preparedness/protection/prevention, response, recovery, and mitigation – all of which have distinct actions and missions to reduce or eliminate adverse impacts from both threats and hazards. Academics will find the connections to allied fields such as meteorology, hydrology, homeland security, healthcare, and more. The book examines many of the distinct differences and variances within the specific scope of water-related incidents, crises, emergencies, and disasters. It provides examples and practical strategies for protection/prevention, response, recovery, and mitigation against adverse impacts to people, property, and organizations. It is also organized in the same construct used by emergency management practitioners (incident command system elements, disaster cycle phases, etc.), which will help align the academic world of emergency management education to both the practice and the training in the emergency management field. Takes a global view on threats and hazards, as well as their solutions. Provides a single repository of the majority of water-related incidents and provides a "how to" guide for resilience. Identifies cascading impacts and provides checklists for resolutions. Includes numerous case studies organized by threat and hazard. Chapter 2 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons [Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND)] 4.0 license.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1950s, the housing developments in the West that historian Lincoln Bramwell calls “wilderburbs” have offered residents both the pleasures of living in nature and the creature comforts of the suburbs. Remote from cities but still within commuting distance, nestled next to lakes and rivers or in forests and deserts, and often featuring spectacular views of public lands, wilderburbs celebrate the natural beauty of the American West and pose a vital threat to it. Wilderburbs tells the story of how roads and houses and water development have transformed the rural landscape in the West. Bramwell introduces readers to developers, homeowners, and government regulators, all of whom have faced unexpected environmental problems in designing and building wilderburb communities, including unpredictable water supplies, threats from wildfires, and encounters with wildlife. By looking at wilderburbs in the West, especially those in Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico, Bramwell uncovers the profound environmental consequences of Americans’ desire to live in the wilderness.
