Book Thus Spake Zarathustra

    Book Details:
  • Author : Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche
  • Publisher : Algora Publishing
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 0875862101
  • Pages : 270 pages

Download or read book Thus Spake Zarathustra written by Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zarathustra was Nietzsche's masterpiece, the first comprehensive statement of his mature philosophy, and the introduction of his influential and well-known (and misunderstood) ideas including the "overman" or "superman" and the "will to power." It is also the source of Nietzsche's famous (and much misconstrued) statement that "God is dead." Though this is essentially a work of philosophy, it is also a masterpiece of literature, a cross between prose and poetry. A considerable part and parcel of Nietzsche's genius is his ability to make his language dance, and this is what becomes extraordinarily difficult to translate. It has been almost 40 years since Hollingdale's version for Penguin and almost 50 since Kaufmann's. However, anyone who appreciates the German original knows that these translations are merely adequate. While earlier translators have smoothed out the rough edges, cut corners and sometimes omitted troublesome passages outright, this one honors and respects the original as no other. Kaufmann and others are guilty of the deplorable tendency to "improve" on the original. Much is lost by this means, to say nothing of the interior rhythms, the grace notes, the not always graceful but omnipresent and striking puns and wordplays. And in not a few instances the current translation improves on Kaufmann's use of English or otherwise clarifies what Nietzsche is really saying

Book excerpt: No picture ever came more beautiful than Raphael's Pandora... Discovered by a dashing young lieutenant, Raymond Kelvedon in a Normandy Chateau in 1944, she had cast her spell over his family - all artists and dealers - for fifty years. Hanging in a turret of their lovely Cotswold house, Pandora witnessed Raymond's tempestuous wife Galena both entertaining a string of lovers, and giving birth to her four children: Jupiter, Alizarin, Jonathan and superbrat Sienna. Then an exquisite stranger rolls up, claiming to be a long-lost daughter of the family, setting the three Belvedon brothers at each other's throats. Accompanying her is her fatally glamorous boyfriend, whose very different agenda includes an unhealthy interest in the Raphael. When the painting is stolen during a fireworks party, the police are called and a global search ensues to discover once and for all who stole the masterpiece and who it actually belongs to. Will passionate love triumph, and will Pandora be restored to her rightful home? ---------------------------------- 'Cooper's sheer exuberance and energy are contagious' The Times 'The whole thing is a riot - vastly superior to anything else in a glossy cover' Daily Telegraph 'This is Jilly on top form with her most sparkling novel to date' Evening Standard 'One reads her for her joie de vivre, her maudlin romanticism, her love of arty references and her razor sharp sense of humour. Book excerpt: Morale in the country of Oasis has never been worse. The Earthers, a tree-hugging sect, fall on their knees at the name of the Earth Mother and beg forgiveness for their crimes against twigs and weeds. The Godlies preach penitence, suffering, and stifling self-righteousness and inspire their followers into submission with terrifying images of an afterlife spent being chased by a fire-breathing dragon. Most Oasans are more concerned about this life. They all fear the dragon in the swamp at the country's edge, but they don't know that he fears them, too. Druid, whose greatest talent is for putting out fires, steams up when he learns that a cunning opportunist intends to exploit dragonphobia and call for a communal dragon hunt so that he can level the swamp for suburban housing.Tara, a kitten with charisma, becomes Druid's ally. She'll need all her charm to enchant Serazina. This young human woman hides her ability to read emotions in order to avoid a stay in the Ward for the Chronically Crazy. Serazina gets into greater trouble when Phileas, Guardian of the troubled land, discovers that she can read minds, too, and targets her to be the mother of the heir he so badly needs.Phileas has more immediate problems. The would-be real estate mogul is spreading rumors that the Guardian is soft on dragons. His follow-up plan involves assassination. Dead dragons, dead Guardians: It's all one to a megalomaniac who dreams of domination.Somehow these four must overcome communication difficulties, mutual mistrust, and delusions of human superiority to save the country. Otherwise, even though Druid doesn't breathe fire, Oasis will be toast. From the Book:Orion stood on a ridge overlooking the city. As he swayed, exhausted and hungry, the threads of its winding, dirty streets seemed to tighten around his neck in a noose that limited both breath and freedom. His sister, Sekhmet, nuzzled him with her black nose. Lost in thought?Wishing you’d waited a year or so to haul me away from the good life.We thought we’d better get on the road before you wore out your equipment, Mr. Tomcat Stud.Orion’s other sister, Bast, trotted toward them, her white fur gleaming in starlight. We’ve come to the right place. The pull is strong.Praise the Many-Taloned One, Sekhmet said. My paws are killing me.The lights of the city flickered in eye-burning imitation of the starry sky. It’s not going to be easy, Orion said. The smell alone makes me gag. It’s not just the physical stench, but also the foul odor of self-righteousness and fear. And some of the fear is mine. I’ve never failed before.Big Dragons Don't Cry highlights the separation between humans and the rest of life that allows ecological disasters to unfold.I used the medium of fantasy to imagine new possibilities:What would the world be like if humans and animals understood and respected each other? What could humans learn if we no longer saw ourselves as apart from nature but entered wholeheartedly into the dance of life? We might trip over our feet at first, but practice makes improvement.

  • Author : Madison Margolin
  • Publisher : Hay House, Inc
  • Release : 2023-11-07
  • ISBN : 1401973531
  • Pages : 257 pages

Download or read book Exile Ecstasy written by Madison Margolin and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2023-11-07 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the perspective of having grown up among "HinJews" in the Ram Dass community and cannabis legalization movement, journalist Madison Margolin takes the reader on a journey inside New York's Jewish counterculture and the Hasidic underground, reconciling her roots, tackling ancestral Jewish trauma, and finding intersectionality between the Jewish and psychedelic experience. Exile and Ecstasy sets out to explore the psychedelic path that occupies the crossroads between the Ram Dass movement and Hasidism. It's a path of seeking and escape, rebellion and return, medicine and magic. Bridging the polar ends of the Jewish and psychedelic worlds, while buttressing the experience with expert reportage, Madison Margolin prods at Be Here Now to find its relevance and utility in a new generation, facing different issues than those Ram Dass faced as a generally well-to-do boomer. In doing so, she looks at solutions to our lack of presence and offers practices that help us integrate our psychedelic experiences in mundane life, as well as in the context of our roots and religious identities. This book is for anyone looking to feel spiritually kindled, to make peace with where they come from, and to reconcile seemingly disparate experiences of spirituality and psychedelics, with traditional religion.
