Book excerpt: "I know there is someone else in this fire with me."~Markus, age 20Born medically complex and fragile. Feeling perfectly fine one day andthen, BAM, serious complications strike. Hostile invaders threaten.Discouragement lurks in the shadows-and once again, a war is wagedwithin Markus's own body.Intense health struggles have dominated Markus's life of twentyyears-and thus his family's as well. Together they tell their story.I have heard two statements over and over, and most days, I do nothave a clear-cut, decisive answer. "Call if you need anything," usuallyleaves me completely tongue-tied. "How can I help?" makes my mindfeel like it is immediately an empty, blank void. It is both humbling andwonderful when others want to help. We need help, lots of help, morethan I will ever admit.~Deb Bachman, Mom"This is a story that nobody asks to be in, but it's a story of strengthand faith against incredible odds, and it's full of heroes."~Larry Bond, Author

Download or read book Exclusion Embrace written by Miroslav Volf and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life at the end of the twentieth century presents us with a disturbing reality. Otherness, the simple fact of being different in some way, has come to be defined as in and of itself evil. Miroslav Volf contends that if the healing word of the gospel is to be heard today, Christian theology must find ways of speaking that address the hatred of the other. Reaching back to the New Testament metaphor of salvation as reconciliation, Volf proposes the idea of embrace as a theological response to the problem of exclusion. Increasingly we see that exclusion has become the primary sin, skewing our perceptions of reality and causing us to react out of fear and anger to all those who are not within our (ever-narrowing) circle. In light of this, Christians must learn that salvation comes, not only as we are reconciled to God, and not only as we "learn to live with one another", but as we take the dangerous and costly step of opening ourselves to the other, of enfolding him or her in the same embrace with which we have been enfolded by God.

Book Remarkable

  • Author : Brady Boyd
  • Publisher : Howard Books
  • Release : 2019-09-03
  • ISBN : 1982101377
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Remarkable written by Brady Boyd and published by Howard Books. This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Senior pastor Brady Boyd draws parallels between the early church at Corinth and today’s culture to illustrate how Christians can stay true to their beliefs and live a loving and faith-filled life—demonstrating a new way to interact with the modern world. Lead pastor of New Life Church Brady Boyd encourages us to look beyond the archetypical pitfalls Christians historically have fallen victim to: Instigators hold an “us-against-you” outlook towards anyone whose beliefs differ from theirs; Isolators go into holy hiding and choose to associate exclusively with those who think like them; and Integrators slide so seamlessly into the surrounding culture that they become ingrained in it. Instead, as Boyd illuminates here in Remarkable, Paul the Apostle proposes a new approach, one centered on God’s wisdom rather than societal temptations and popular culture. Through Paul’s teachings, Boyd shows us how we can not only learn to hear the Word, but also live it, reclaiming the peace, the freedom, and the joy that we lost by imitating the modern world. Remarkable reminds us that by embracing the vision Paul held for followers of God, we can begin leading truly remarkable lives by letting love guide us every step of the way.

Book Embrace Fearlessly the Burning World

Download or read book Embrace Fearlessly the Burning World written by Barry Lopez and published by Random House. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES EDITORS’ CHOICE • A “lyrical” (Chicago Tribune) final work of nonfiction from the National Book Award–winning author of Arctic Dreams and Horizon, a literary icon whose writing, fieldwork, and mentorship inspired generations of writers and activists. “Mesmerizing . . . a master observer . . . whose insight and moral clarity have earned comparisons to Henry David Thoreau.”—The Wall Street Journal ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS OF 2022—Lit Hub, BookPage An ardent steward of the land, fearless traveler, and unrivaled observer of nature and culture, Barry Lopez died after a long illness on Christmas Day 2020. The previous summer, a wildfire had consumed much of what was dear to him in his home place and the community around it—a tragic reminder of the climate change of which he’d long warned. At once a cri de coeur and a memoir of both pain and wonder, this remarkable collection of essays adds indelibly to Lopez’s legacy, and includes previously unpublished works, some written in the months before his death. They unspool memories both personal and political, among them tender, sometimes painful stories of his childhood in New York City and California, reports from expeditions to study animals and sea life, recollections of travels to Antarctica and other extraordinary places on earth, and meditations on finding oneself amid vast, dramatic landscapes. He reflects on those who taught him, including Indigenous elders and scientific mentors who sharpened his eye for the natural world. We witness poignant returns from his travels to the sanctuary of his Oregon backyard, adjacent to the McKenzie River. And in prose of searing candor, he reckons with the cycle of life, including his own, and—as he has done throughout his career—with the dangers the earth and its people are facing. With an introduction by Rebecca Solnit that speaks to Lopez’s keen attention to the world, including its spiritual dimensions, Embrace Fearlessly the Burning World opens our minds and souls to the importance of being wholly present for the beauty and complexity of life. “This posthumously published collection of essays by nature writer Barry Lopez reveals an exceptional life and mind . . . While certainly a testament to his legacy and an ephemeral reprieve from his death in 2020, this book is more than a memorial: it offers a clear-eyed praxis of hope in what Lopez calls this ‘Era of Emergencies.’”—Scientific American

Book Embracing the Transformation

Download or read book Embracing the Transformation written by Walter Brueggemann and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Like athletes, preachers carry inside them the voices of their most challenging coaches--people who have encouraged them to dig deeper, stretch farther, and more faithfully pursue their craft and calling. In these crystalline essays, Walter Brueggemann is that voice again, shaking us free of the dust of our own diminished expectations, bolstering our best instincts, and consistently pointing us toward a gospel that would make the powers and principalities tremble." --Scott Black Johnston, Senior Pastor, Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church "Richly informed by Scripture, this superb book is a must-read for preachers and, indeed, for laity who love the Word. Brueggemann's theological interpretation of the biblical text strikes the mind and heart and calls out the church as an alternative community to embrace the work of transformation God is doing in the world. Brueggemann's books always inform and inspire, but as I read this extraordinary text, I found myself over and over again giving thanks to God." --Tex Sample, Professor Emeritus of Church and Society, Saint Paul School of Theology "In this splendid collection of essays, we encounter the Walter Brueggemann we have come to expect--wise, edgy, original, provocative, stimulating to preachers, and deeply encouraging to a church in quest of a prophetic, bold, and vital faith." --Thomas G. Long, Professor of Preaching, Candler School of Theology, Emory University
