Book excerpt: An overview of the fundamental ways that the brainstem influences the initiation, mediation, and regulation of behavior--and the first major survey in the subject since the appearance of the classic work, The Reticular Formation Revisted. Also featured are an introductory tutorial section that synthesizes research discoveries with the historical milestones in brainstem research, basic neuroanatomy, arousal, etc., that are related to behavorial ``readiness,'' sensory and motor functions, and neuroendocrine and autonomic functions. The latter part of the book features a series of specialized topics, each written by a noted authority in the field.

Download or read book The Paradigm of Self organization written by G. J. Dalenoort and published by Gordon & Breach Science Pub. This book was released on 1989 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 1985, immediately following the European Meeting on Systems Research and Cybernetics, a small international group assembled to discuss the status of thought and work relating to "self-organizing systems"; this nicely produced volume contains 16 essays derived (in the main) from that meeting. Though a few of the papers contain mathematical material, most are qualitative, and would be accessible to attentive non-technical readers. Generally speaking, the effort of the authors is to identify and to underscore the radical elements in the self-organization concept, to promote that concept (now rather less talked about than for awhile it was) to the status of a "paradigm". Download or read book The Neural Basis of Behavior written by A.L. Beckman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Symposium on the Neural Basis of Behavior, from which this volume was produced, was held at the Alfred I. duPont Institute on June 7 and 8, 1979. It brought outstanding investigators in four fundamental areas of behavioral neurobiology into juxtaposition, there to provide an integrated, multidisciplinary perspective on behaviorally significant brain mechanisms. Particular emphasis was placed on topics of interest to neurobiologists as well as to clinicians in neurological and psychiatric disciplines. The session on central activity states was selected as an appropriate point of departure because the continuum of brain activity states extending from the natural depression of hibernation through the heightened levels of arousal accom panying learning is such a clear and basic determinant of behavioral output. The papers on learning and memory outlined diverse approaches to un derstanding the basis of these interrelat~d CNS capabilities that constitute the neural basis of behavioral adaptation. Finally, the topics of affective states and mechanisms of pain provided a focus of clinically relevant discus sion covering multiple levels of functional and anatomical CNS organiza tion. The success of the symposium bore testimony to the excellence of the presentations and to the symbiosis of their content; both are preserved herein. The support and encouragement of Dr. G. Dean MacEwen, Medical Director of the Alfred I. duPont Institute, is gratefully acknowl edged. Alexander L. Download or read book Counternarratives written by Henry A. Giroux and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To understand contemporary times, we must appreciate the extent to which our lives are affected by the cultural and political struggle between "official" narratives and the counternarratives which emerge as oppositional responses. Counternarratives develops a concept of "postmodern counternarratives" as a frame for exploring the politics of media, technology and education within everyday struggles for human identities and loyalties. The authors identify two forms of counternarratives. One functions as a critique of the modernist propensity for grand narratives. The second concept, which is the focus of the book, builds on the first; the idea of "little stories" addressing cultural and political opposition to the "official" narratives used to manipulate public consciousness. Each marks an important point of contestation within contemporary education and culture: curriculum, pedagogy, literacy, media representations and applications of new technologies.
