Book excerpt: Autonomy is one of the major concerns during the planning of a space mission, whether its objective is scientific (interplanetary exploration, observations, etc.) or commercial (service in orbit). For space rendezvous, this autonomy depends on the on-board capacity of controlling the relative movement between two spacecraft. In the context of satellite servicing (troubleshooting, propellant refueling, orbit correction, end-of-life deorbit, etc.), the feasibility of such missions is also strongly linked to the ability of the guidance and control algorithms to account for all operational constraints (for example, thruster saturation or restrictions on the relative positioning between the vehicles) while maximizing the life of the vehicle (minimizing propellant consumption). The literature shows that this problem has been intensively studied since the early 2000s. However, the proposed algorithms are not entirely satisfactory. Some approaches, for example, degrade the constraints in order to be able to base the control algorithm on an efficient optimization problem. Other methods accounting for the whole set of constraints of the problem are too cumbersome to be embedded on real computers existing in the spaceships. The main object of this thesis is the development of new efficient and validated algorithms for the impulsive guidance and control of spacecraft in the context of the so-called "hovering" phases of the orbital rendezvous, i.e. the stages in which a secondary vessel must maintain its position within a bounded area of space relatively to another main vessel. The first contribution presented in this manuscript uses a new mathematical formulation of the space constraints for the relative motion between spacecraft for the design of control algorithms with more efficient computational processing compared to traditional approaches. The second and main contribution is a predictive control strategy that has been formally demonstrated to ensure the convergence of relative trajectories towards the "hovering" zone, even in the presence of disturbances or saturation of the actuators.[...].

The position and attitude dynamics and kinematics equations for RVD are presented systematically in accordance with several different coordinate systems, including elliptical orbital frame, and recommendations are supplied on which of these equations to use in different phases of RVD. The book subsequently explains the basic principles and relative navigation algorithms of RVD sensors such as GNSS, radar, and camera-type RVD sensors. It also provides guidance algorithms and schemes for different phases of RVD, including the latest research advances in rapid RVD. In turn, the book presents a detailed introduction to intelligent adaptive control and proposes corresponding theoretical approaches to thruster configuration and control allocation for RVD. Book excerpt: Spacecraft Dynamics and Control: The Embedded Model Control Approach provides a uniform and systematic way of approaching space engineering control problems from the standpoint of model-based control, using state-space equations as the key paradigm for simulation, design and implementation. The book introduces the Embedded Model Control methodology for the design and implementation of attitude and orbit control systems. The logic architecture is organized around the embedded model of the spacecraft and its surrounding environment. The model is compelled to include disturbance dynamics as a repository of the uncertainty that the control law must reject to meet attitude and orbit requirements within the uncertainty class. The source of the real-time uncertainty estimation/prediction is the model error signal, as it encodes the residual discrepancies between spacecraft measurements and model output. The embedded model and the uncertainty estimation feedback (noise estimator in the book) constitute the state predictor feeding the control law. Asymptotic pole placement (exploiting the asymptotes of closed-loop transfer functions) is the way to design and tune feedback loops around the embedded model (state predictor, control law, reference generator). The design versus the uncertainty class is driven by analytic stability and performance inequalities. The method is applied to several attitude and orbit control problems. Book excerpt: Recent space missions rely more and more on the cooperation between different spacecraft in order to achieve a desired objective. Among the spacecraft proximity operations, the orbital rendezvous is a classical example that has generated a large amount of studies since the beginning of the space exploration. However, the motivations and objectives for the proximity operations have considerably changed. The need for higher autonomy, better security and lower costs prompts for the development of new guidance and control algorithms. The presence of different types of constraints and physical limitations also contributes to the increased complexity of the problem. In this challenging context, this dissertation represents a contribution to the development of new spacecraft guidance and control algorithms. The works presented in this dissertation are based on a structural analysis of the spacecraft relative dynamics. Using a simplified model, a new set of parametric expressions is developed for the relative motion. This parametrization is very well suited for the analysis of the geometric properties of periodic relative trajectories and for handling different types of state constraints. A formal connection is evidenced between the set of parameters that define constrained trajectories and the cone of positive semi-definite matrices. This result is exploited in the design of spacecraft relative trajectories for proximity operations, in the impulsive control framework. The resulting guidance algorithms enable the guaranteed continuous constraints satisfaction, while still relying on semi-definite programming tools. The problem of the robustness of the computed maneuvers with respect to navigation uncertainties is also addressed.

Book excerpt: This doctoral research investigates the fundamental problems in the dynamics and control of spacecraft rendezvous with a non-cooperative tumbling target. New control schemes based on nonlinear model predictive control method have been developed and validated experimentally by ground-based air-bearing satellite simulators. It is focused on the autonomous rendezvous for a chaser spacecraft to approach the target in the final rendezvous stage. Two challenges have been identified and investigated in this stage: the mathematical modeling of the targets tumbling motion and the constrained control scheme that is solvable in an on-line manner. First, the mathematical description of the tumbling motion of the target spacecraft is proposed for the chaser spacecraft to rendezvous with the target. In the meantime, the practical constraints are formulated to ensure the safety and avoid collision during the final approaching stage. This set of constraints are integrated into the trajectory planning problem as a constrained optimization problem. Second, the nonlinear model predictive control is proposed to generate the feedback control commands by iteratively solving an open-loop discrete-time nonlinear optimal control problem at each sampling instant. The proposed control scheme is validated both theoretically and experimentally by a custom-built spacecraft simulator floating on a high-accuracy granite table. Computer software for electronic hardware for the spacecraft simulator and for the controller is designed and developed in house. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed nonlinear model predictive control scheme in a hardware-in-the-loop environment. Furthermore, a preliminary outlook is given for future extension of the spacecraft simulator with consideration of the robotic arms.

Book excerpt: This research contributes to multiple spacecraft control by developing an autonomous distributed control algorithm for close proximity operations of multiple spacecraft systems, including rendezvous and docking scenarios. The proposed control algorithm combines the efficiency of the Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) and the robust collision avoidance capability of the Artificial Potential Function (APF) method. The LQR control effort serves as the attractive force toward goal positions, while the APF-based repulsive functions provide collision avoidance for both fixed and moving obstacles. The combination of the LQR and APF control logics, referred to as the LQR/APF control algorithm, yielded promising results as demonstrated by the numerous multiple spacecraft maneuver simulations reported in this dissertation. In order to validate the proposed control approach, a multiple spacecraft model validation and visualization technique was developed using a versatile MATLABSatellite Toll Kit (STK) interface to propagate the spacecraft models, compare against STK generated ephemeris, and animate for analysis. The MATLAB-STK interface efficacy was demonstrated during the evaluation and analysis of the innovative LQR/APF multiple spacecraft control algorithm. The LQR/APF multiple spacecraft close proximity control algorithm was developed, refined, and thoroughly simulated using high fidelity six Degree of Freedom (DOF) spacecraft models. In order to evaluate the stability and robustness of the control approach a Monte-Carlo simulations set was run. The LQR/APF control algorithm was further evaluated by virtual hardware-in-the-loop implementation at the NPS Spacecraft Robotics Laboratory. The laboratory hosts the Autonomous Docking and Spacecraft Servicing testbed which allows for on-the-ground testing of close proximity multiple spacecraft control concepts.

These applications provide strong motivations for the design of computationally lightweight algorithms that enable autonomous operations, especially for missions constrained by size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C) such as cubesats. However, the more democratic access to space has also further contributed to the space debris problem, with worryingly many defunct and derelict spacecraft crowding up precious space. Dealing with such noncooperative objects poses significant challenges, with large uncertainties in mass properties and applied forces by the environment. This dissertation addresses such problems related to SWaP-C constraints and also noncooperative targets within the fields of relative spacecraft navigation and rendezvous. The first topic addresses relative angular velocity and associated uncertainty estimation from a geometrical perspective via batch processes. The second topic addresses real-time relative pose estimation and tracking using monocular imagery for cubesat applications. The third topic addresses analytical guidance solutions for radial-thrust-based far-field rendezvous and orbit rotations. Finally, the fourth topic addresses semi-analytical techniques to achieve circular orbit changes with radial and velocity-normal thrust

Book excerpt: This thesis addresses the minimum-time rendezvous optimal control problem by implementing continuation with a stabilizing input. The rendezvous problem is first formulated as an optimal control problem which is then parameterized to enable the inclusion of the continuation parameter. A stabilizing input is then applied to attenuate the errors accumulated during the process of numerical integration. In this work, a state feedback stabilizing term with an additive open-loop control stabilizing term is implemented. By applying stabilized continuation to a rendezvous scenario in which two spacecraft are initialized in the same planar, circular orbit separated by some phase angle, a family of minimum-time rendezvous solutions is obtained for variable levels of thrust, mass flow rate, or initial phase angle separation. The approach is first demonstrated on a linear harmonic oscillator problem, and then applied to the Keplerian two-body motion model, with and without the inclusion of atmospheric drag perturbations. In addition to rendezvous trajectories, the approach is also applied to generate kinetic impact trajectories. This work considers only translational dynamics in two-dimensional space, however, the scope is not limited strictly to circular orbits. The effectiveness of the stabilized continuation scheme when used to generate minimum-time rendezvous and kinetic impact trajectories is demonstrated through simulations. The optimality of the solutions is verified with the Hamiltonian. The performance of the stabilized continuation scheme is compared against that of a direct shooting method, and the results obtained in this thesis are compared to other results from similar applications in the literature.
