Book The Conscience and Self Conscious Emotions in Adolescence

Download or read book The Conscience and Self Conscious Emotions in Adolescence written by Frans Schalkwijk and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The consequences of apparent moral failings in an individual are something that can be seen frequently in the media and in everyday life. One issue that is rarely addressed in public discussion about someone’s ‘lack of conscience’ is any thought as to how the conscience actually functions. In The Conscience and Self-Conscious Emotions in Adolescence, Frans Schalkwijk presents a new definition of the conscience as a psychic function in which self-conscious emotions and empathy are dominant. Schalkwijk combines current scientific research into empathy, shame and guilt as well as his rich clinical experience to create a wealth of information for clinicians working with children and adolescents. This book is a superb guide for operationalizing the diagnostics of the conscience, presenting a developmental approach to the theory and diagnostics of the conscience and integrating psychoanalytic, cognitive behavioural, social, psychological and neurobiological theories. Research has shown that human behaviours are often enacted well below our potential cognitive level. In this book, a balance is found between affective and cognitive aspects of the conscience. Accessibly written and incorporating case studies and detailed notation throughout, this is a highly practical work ideal for psychoanalysts, psychiatrists, psychologists, students and professionals working with children, adolescents and adults.

This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescenceâ€"beginning with the onset of puberty and ending in the mid-20sâ€"is a critical period of development during which key areas of the brain mature and develop. These changes in brain structure, function, and connectivity mark adolescence as a period of opportunity to discover new vistas, to form relationships with peers and adults, and to explore one's developing identity. It is also a period of resilience that can ameliorate childhood setbacks and set the stage for a thriving trajectory over the life course. Because adolescents comprise nearly one-fourth of the entire U.S. population, the nation needs policies and practices that will better leverage these developmental opportunities to harness the promise of adolescenceâ€"rather than focusing myopically on containing its risks. This report examines the neurobiological and socio-behavioral science of adolescent development and outlines how this knowledge can be applied, both to promote adolescent well-being, resilience, and development, and to rectify structural barriers and inequalities in opportunity, enabling all adolescents to flourish.

Book Uncovering Adolescent Shame in the Therapeutic Relationship

Download or read book Uncovering Adolescent Shame in the Therapeutic Relationship written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study examined the role of the therapeutic relationship when an adolescent client presents with shame. While shame is a highly unpleasant emotion that is a universally experienced, it is also a neglected emotion in the therapeutic relationship. Furthermore, adolescence is a developmental stage where intense magnification of shame and mental health issues may become apparent. Estimates reveal that most mental health problems begin during the ages of 12-24 (Kinnunen, 2010). Additionally, statistics show that 20%-30% of adolescents have one major depressive episode before they reach adulthood, and 50%-75% of individuals develop anxiety disorders during adolescence (Schwarz, 2009). These numbers demonstrate rising mental health issues amongst teens.

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Adolescence written by Roger J.R. Levesque and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 3161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Adolescence breaks new ground as an important central resource for the study of adolescence. Comprehensive in breath and textbook in depth, the Encyclopedia of Adolescence – with entries presented in easy-to-access A to Z format – serves as a reference repository of knowledge in the field as well as a frequently updated conduit of new knowledge long before such information trickles down from research to standard textbooks. By making full use of Springer’s print and online flexibility, the Encyclopedia is at the forefront of efforts to advance the field by pushing and creating new boundaries and areas of study that further our understanding of adolescents and their place in society. Substantively, the Encyclopedia draws from four major areas of research relating to adolescence. The first broad area includes research relating to "Self, Identity and Development in Adolescence". This area covers research relating to identity, from early adolescence through emerging adulthood; basic aspects of development (e.g., biological, cognitive, social); and foundational developmental theories. In addition, this area focuses on various types of identity: gender, sexual, civic, moral, political, racial, spiritual, religious, and so forth. The second broad area centers on "Adolescents’ Social and Personal Relationships". This area of research examines the nature and influence of a variety of important relationships, including family, peer, friends, sexual and romantic as well as significant nonparental adults. The third area examines "Adolescents in Social Institutions". This area of research centers on the influence and nature of important institutions that serve as the socializing contexts for adolescents. These major institutions include schools, religious groups, justice systems, medical fields, cultural contexts, media, legal systems, economic structures, and youth organizations. "Adolescent Mental Health" constitutes the last major area of research. This broad area of research focuses on the wide variety of human thoughts, actions, and behaviors relating to mental health, from psychopathology to thriving. Major topic examples include deviance, violence, crime, pathology (DSM), normalcy, risk, victimization, disabilities, flow, and positive youth development.

Book The Development of Shame and Guilt from Late Childhood to Mid adolescence

Download or read book The Development of Shame and Guilt from Late Childhood to Mid adolescence written by Shaun David Watson and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The broad aim of this thesis, therefore, was to examine the development of shame and guilt from late childhood, across the adolescent transition, and into mid-adolescence. Unfortunately, no single measure existed capable of assessing shame and guilt across these developmental periods. To address this shortfall, the aim of Study One was to assess the vailidity and reliability of the TOSCA-A shame and guilt scales for use with children and young adolescents. Results with 300 children (aged 9-11 years) and 299 adolescents (aged 12-14 years) indicated satisfactory internal consistency, assessed using Cronbach's alpha and mean inter-item correlations. Sound construct validity was demonstrated through significant and moderate correlations between the TOSCA-A shame and guilt scales, and measures of depression and empathy. Lastly, significant and moderate correlations over a 13-month period revealed stability of constructs. Overall, results from Study One provided comprehensive evidence that the TOSCA-A (in its revised form) is a psychometrically sound measure for the assessment of shame and guilt for use both with children and adolescents. Using this measure, Study Two addressed the central aim of this thesis, being to examine the development of shame and guilt from late childhood to mid adolescence. Specifically, Study Two employed a three-year longitudinal-sequential design to examine the developmental trajectory, sex differences, and stability of individual differences in 1348 children and adolescents (aged 9-14 years at time-point one). In contrast to predictions, time and age-group results indicated a gentle decline in shame-proneness, and primarily stability in guilt-proneness. As predicted, girls scored higher on both emotions, however in contrast to predictions, this difference did not become more pronounced over time and with an increase in age. Individual differences in proneness were relatively stable for both emotions, although guilt-proneness became increasingly stable with age. Overall, results indicate a developmental progression of shame and guilt which is characterised by continuity rather than change, and suggest that by adolescence, both shame and guilt are relatively stable affective dispositions. The current thesis fills a void by addressing a neglected area in the shame and guilt literature, and represents an important step in understanding these emotions during this developmental period. Furthermore, limitations and considerations to emerge from this thesis serve to inform directions for future research.
