Book excerpt: Excerpt from Posthumous Theological Works, Vol. 1: Of Emanuel Swedenborg, Servant of the Lord Jesus Christ These volumes of Posthumous Theological Works of Swedenborg include a number of the smaller posthumous works, which have never before been brought together in a form convenient for use. Most of them have been published in book or pamphlet form. Some have appeared only in magazines, notably the Last Judgment Posthumous. A few minor parts have not previously been translated into English. Included in the volumes are a number of extracts from Swedenborg's correspondence. Among these are two autobiographical letters of Swedenborg, which are prefixed to this volume. Those at the end of this volume are taken from the Documents Concerning Swedenborg, collected, edited and translated by Dr. Rudolph L. Tafel. The originals of these documents are not at present available for use in revising the translation. Most of them are in the Library of the Academy of Sciences at Stockholm. We have used the translation made by Dr. Tafel. These theological extracts throw much light on several important doctrines. They have been classified and arranged according to the subjects. Arrangements are now being made for copying all the original documents concerning Swedenborg, including many new documents which have recently been discovered by Mr. Alfred H. Stroh, M. A., during his work of phototyping the manuscripts of Swedenborg, and his investigations of Swedenborgiana in Sweden and other countries. When this copying is completed, it will be possible to revise Dr. Tafel's translation of the documents by comparison with the originals. More material of a theological character may also be found in these new documents, that can be incorporated in future editions of these volumes of Posthumous Theological Works. Any suggestions looking toward rendering the same complete, including the perfecting of the text and translation, will be welcomed by the publishers. "Spiritual life is acquired solely by a life according to the commandments in the Word. These commandments are given in summary in the Decalogue, namely, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet the goods of others. These commandments are the commandments that are to be done, for when a man does these his works are good and his life is spiritual, and for the reason that so far as a man shuns evils and hates them so far he wills and loves goods." "The opening of the spiritual sense of the Word did come through a man who could not only receive the doctrines of spiritual life with the understanding, but publish the same to the world by means of the printed page. Such a man was Emanuel Swedenborg.
