Since the last edition published in 2007, there have been dramatic changes in cataloging systems from the Library of Congress. The most notable being the shift from AACR2 to Resource Description and Access (RDA) as the new standard developed by the Library of Congress. With the help of the coauthor, Athena Salaba, this text is modified throughout to conform to the new standard. Retaining the overall outline of the previous edition, this text presents the essence of library cataloging and classification in terms of three basic functions: descriptive cataloging, subject access, and classification. Within this framework, all chapters have been rewritten to incorporate the changes that have occurred during the interval between the third and fourth editions. In each part, the historical development and underlying principles of the retrieval mechanism at issue are treated first, because these are considered essential to an understanding of cataloging and classification. Discussion and examples of provisions in the standards and tools are then presented in order to illustrate the operations covered in each chapter. Divided into five parts—a general overview; record production and structure, encoding formats, and metadata records; RDA; subject access and controlled vocabularies; and the organization of library resources—each part of the book begins with a list of the standards and tools used in the preparation and processing of that part of the cataloging record covered, followed by suggested background readings selected to help the reader gain an overview of the subject to be presented. This book is the standard text for the teaching and understanding of cataloging and classification.

Book excerpt: In 1956, my mom, Trude Forsher, was a stay-at-home housewife raising two kids as well as putting up with a jealous husband who didn't encourage anything beyond cleaning the house and feeding the family. Mom had different ideas and at night, she took writing lessons at UCLA, eventually publishing a magazine article about her experiences as a contestant on Groucho Marx' You Bet Your Life. That same year, Elvis Presley arrived in Hollywood to begin filming his first film, Love Me Tender. Mom was able to arrange for an interview with Colonel Parker, Elvis' manager and the artist on the Milton Berle Show. Several weeks later, Colonel and Elvis offered her the position of personal secretary in the organization. She accepted and the press soon announced Trude Forsher had the job millions of young fans could only dream of. Over the next several years, she worked on such films as Love Me Tender, Loving You, Jailhouse Rock, King Creole and GI Blues. Her title was soon changed to promotion coordinator and she became best friends with the likes of not only Elvis and the Colonel, but Hal Wallis, Norman Taurog, Nick Adams, Cecil B. Demille and Paramount Studios founder Adolph Zukor. At the heart of her years with Elvis were the army of fans that she worked with on a daily basis. Mom passed away at the end of 2000. She saved an immense amount of material from her years with Elvis and the Colonel. In 2002, I began seriously reviewing all these materials. Packed away among the dozens of boxes of Elvis memorabilia was a red shoebox-size box jampacked with over a hundred authentic fan letters. Normally, the hundreds of thousands of letters that arrived at the studios were automatically sent to companies that would send fans photographs of their stars. On occasion, when the Presley organization would change studios, the system would break down and the studio mailroom would call Trude to pick up the fan letters that didn't' get forwarded. Over the years she worked for Elvis, these wayward letters made their way to her home office and filed away. I am sure her intent was to get the fans a photo but these fans never would get it. They now have found a new home in this book I have put many of the items that are shown in the book -as well as others items in the Trude Forsher Collection on a website WWW.ALLTHEKINGSFANS.COM. You can find these items in full color, as well as a podcast of mom describing her experiences with Elvis and the Colonel. Finally, the book includes not only the fan letters from around the world but also a first-hand account of what happened during the early years, authentically capturing her experience as part of a very unique time in Hollywood history, an insider's account of what Elvis' first two years in Hollywood was like. 'This book would not have been finished without the support of 25 generous Kickstarter pledgers.
