Here's the perfect book for anyone who wants to introduce rock 'n' roll and its king to the child in their lives. A Blond Boy Turns into a Black-Haired Teenager," readers can follow key moments in Presley's life, from his birth on the wrong side of the railroad tracks in the Deep South, to playing his first guitar in grade school, to being so nervous during a performance as a teenager that he starts shaking . . . and changes the world! Jonah Winter and Red Nose Studio have created a tour-de-force that captures a boy's loneliness and longing, along with the energy and excitement, passion, and raw talent that was Elvis Presley. Book excerpt: An explosive, groundbreaking album that crowned a new king of rock in just 33 minutes Before Elvis Costello was one of Rolling Stone's greatest artists of all time, before he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he was Declan P. McManus, an office drone with a dull suburban life and a side gig in a pub rock band. In 1976, under the guidance of legendary label Stiff Records, he transformed himself into the snarling, spectacled artist who defied the musical status quo to blaze the trail for a new kind of rock star with his debut album, My Aim Is True. In Elvis Is King, Richard Crouse examines how the man, the myth, and the music of this arrestingly original album smashed the trends of the era to bridge the gap between punk and rock 'n' roll.

"He wanted a Golden Palomino," Priscilla Presley remembers. "He would get up at 3:00 in the morning, go to certain farms and ranches and say, 'Do you have a Golden Palomino for sale?' People would say, 'That was Elvis Presley!" Book Return of the King

Download or read book Return of the King written by Gillian G. Gaar and published by Jawbone Press. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Book). On January 1, 1967, a contract between "Colonel" Tom Parker and his sole client, Elvis Presley, gave Parker a 50 percent cut of profits that Presley generated. It was a shameless grab for a bigger piece of a pie that had actually been shrinking for some time. Though Parker's plan to reestablish Presley as a star after he left the army proved successful at first (with the triumph of films like G.I. Blues and Blue Hawaii ), by 1967 Presley's singles struggled to break the top 20, and he hadn't hit number one for six years. Amazingly, by the end of 1968 he was artistically revitalized, reemerging in a TV comeback special and slimmed down for the now-iconic black leather suit. It was the pivotal moment of the second great period of Presley's career, which lasted through to the end of 1970, during which he recorded some of his most enduring records, including "Suspicious Minds" and "In the Ghetto." Return of the King document's Presley reclamation of his crown, making an extraordinary transition from fading balladeer to engaged, vital artist.

Download or read book Elvis After Elvis written by Gilbert B. Rodman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'For a dead man, Elvis Presley is awfully noisy. His body may have failed him in 1977, but today his spirit, his image, and his myths do more than live on: they flourish, they thrive, they multiply.' Why is Elvis Presley so ubiquitous a presence in US culture? Why does he continue to enjoy a cultural prominence that would be the envy of the most heavily publicized living celebrities? In Elvis after Elvis Gil Rodman traces the myriad manifestations of The King in popular and not-so-popular culture. He asks why Elvis continues to defy our expectations of how dead stars are supposed to behave: Elvis not only refuses to go away, he keeps showing up in places where he seemingly doesn't belong. Rodman draws upon an extensive and eclectic body of Elvis 'sightings', from Elvis's appearances at the heart of the 1992 Presidential campaign to the debate over his worthiness as a subject for a postage stamp, and from Elvis's central role in furious debates about racism and the appropriation of African-American music to the world of Elvis impersonators and the importance of Graceland as a place of pilgrimage for Elvis fans and followers. Rodman shows how Elvis has become inseparable from many of the defining myths of US culture, enmeshed with the American dream and the very idea of the 'United States', caught up in debates about race, gender and sexuality and in the wars over what constitutes a national culture.

Book The Christ of God

    Book Details:
  • Author : Beatrice Francis Carey
  • Publisher : Page Publishing Inc
  • Release : 2024-01-04

  • Pages : 228 pages

Download or read book The Christ of God written by Beatrice Francis Carey and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2024-01-04 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If our lives are built on the foundation of the Word of GOD, it will be that we will seek Him more and more. We will want to honor Him in as many venues as possible. I think if Jesus, the Christ of GOD, was here today, He would be using every platform available to declare His Word. Jesus lives through His Word, so the more it is honored and declared, the more He is glorified. For the most part, GOD'S Word has been ignored lately. When this great country of ours was founded by Christian fathers, the Bible was the textbook children learned to read out of at school. Then we became too prideful and sophisticated to keep Christ central. We started relying on ourselves and our inventions and strayed from our first love. As Hosea rightly proclaimed, "Thou hast gone a whoring from thy GOD." We have "cast off the thing that is good and are deeply corrupted." He continues his rebuke, warning Israel of GOD'S wrath. It is the same for us today. GOD will visit us for our sins, and our "glory shall fly away as a bird" (Hos. 9:11). The message is always the same: return unto your Maker. We are like children following every pied piper on jump street. Hopefully, with more chapters on our King and Savior Jesus Christ, we will flee to His open arms We do not want to hear "The glory is departed," not from our country or any country. No, we want the King's glory to rain down upon us. Hosea's beautiful words remind us, "According to their pasture, so were they filled. They were filled, and their heart was exalted. Therefore, have they forgotten Me. O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself but in Me is thine help. I will be thy King. Where is any other that may save thee?" (Hos. 13:6, 9, 10).
