Book excerpt: Today most students with disabilities are either educated in special education classes located on general education campuses or mainstreamed individually into general education classes. Often, however, a lack of understanding of the disability exists in the minds of students and teachers, causing them to make generalizations concerning the person or persons with disabilities. To facilitate understanding and foster friendships, integration should begin in the elementary schools. For when an individual takes the time to get to know someone, he or she can appreciate the fact that each person has unique strengths and qualities to offer. Elvins Friends demonstrates, not only how someone with a disability can excel and teach others, but also how friendships can form when two people stop to take the time to get to know each other.

Her desire to find a greater meaning in her illness and recovery, and to discover why she developed an auto-immune disease (in which the body reacts against its own tissue), led her to examine the ways in which unresolved and unexamined feelings could influence her health. This is an inspiring book for anyone confronting illness, with special meaning for those with an auto-immune disorder.

Book Humor in Young Adult Literature

Download or read book Humor in Young Adult Literature written by Walter Hogan and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrates the accomplishments of YA authors acclaimed for producing high-quality comedies, who have not yet been treated in a book-length bio-critical study. Simultaneously, it reminds readers that no matter how funny an author of fiction may be, if he shows off his wit in ways that fail to play a natural role in advancing his narrative, he is not writing good fiction. To demonstrate this, humorous passages are presented to illustrate the contribution a sense of humor can make to a work of fiction. The book is arranged topically to facilitate a comparison of distinctive treatments by various authors of adolescent life events, such as sibling rivalry, bullies, and first dates.

Book Guitar Talk

  • Author : Joel Harrison
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2021-09-07
  • ISBN : 1949597148
  • Pages : 446 pages

Download or read book Guitar Talk written by Joel Harrison and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secrets of master guitarists, revealed in conversation. Guitar Talk offers interviews with many of the most creative guitarists of our time. This new book presents these conversations, between Joel Harrison and Nels Cline, Pat Metheny, Fred Frith, Bill Frisell, Julian Lage, Elliott Sharp, Michael Gregory Jackson, Ben Monder, Anthony Pirog, Henry Kaiser, Mike and Leni Stern, Vernon Reid, Mary Halvorson, Nguyên Le, Rez Abbasi, Ava Mendoza, Liberty Ellman, Brandon Ross, Wayne Krantz, Dave Fiuczynski, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Miles Okazaki, Sheryl Bailey, Rafiq Bhatia, and Ralph Towner—twenty-seven great guitarists in all. An enormous range of approaches and sounds exist in the modern guitar. The instrument can howl, scrape, scratch, scream, sing, pluck, and soothe. What stands out in this book is not so much the instrument itself, rather the wonderful and idiosyncratic personalities of these bold souls, their sometimes wild, often zigzagging, and ultimately profound journeys toward beauty, meaning, and excellence in their work. We find out that jazz icon Bill Frisell won a high school band contest playing R&B tunes, beating out future members of Earth Wind and Fire. We learn which of Nels Cline's compositions he wishes to have played at his funeral. Michael Gregory Jackson recounts painful episodes of racism as he stretched between the chasm of avant jazz, rock, and blues in the 1980s. Many more revelations, amusements, and philosophies abound.

Book Got to Go Now

Download or read book Got to Go Now written by Edsel Colvin and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2002-09-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a father-son project. Actually its more of a father-son/son-father project. The letters are from Edsel Colvin to his dad, Frank Colvin from the time Edsel graduated from high school in 1941 until he got out of the Army in 1945. Most of the comments, introductions to chapters, and sidebars are also from Edsel to his son, Paul Colvin, most of them in response to questions about the original letters. These comments and other items are in italics throughout the book. Edsels letters follow a small-town Oregon boy from his idyllic summer job as a fire lookout overlooking the Pacific in the Coast Range in 1941, where he was alone for weeks at a time, to the bitter French winter of 1944-45 when he saw his first combat and a fortuitous, but painful, hospital stay. They continue after the end of the war in Europe in May through the summer of 1945, when he was sweating out whether he was going to be sent to fight the Japanese in the Pacific Theater. They end in the fall of 1945 with his long-awaited discharge from the Army in Texas and his return to civilian life in Gold Beach.
