Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elson Basic Readers: Primer The second aim in this revision was to incorporate new features demanded by experience and the results of recent experiments in reading. Four such features merit Special emphasis: (a) organization of the material to promote sequential habits of thinking; (b) simplicity in content, sentence structure, and vocabulary to insure rapid progress, confidence, and keen interest; (0) balanced variety to cause a steady growth in diversified reading interests; and (d) a practical method, based on the results of scientific studies, to build an early foundation for the various reading attitudes, habits, and skills that are essential in modern life. An additional distinctive feature of the Primer relates to the extreme care exercised in every stage of its construction. In addition to continuous and painstaking effort by the authors, the materials included were subjected to the constant criticism of experts in primary instruction. Furthermore, studies were continually in progress with respect to various problems which were subject to quantitative determination. These are listed in the manual which accompanies the Primer. Book excerpt: Jennifer Whitney was the last American virgin. At least that s what she felt like in 1986 as she began her sophomore year at Central Illinois University. She was proud of her decision to wait for the right guy, and yet she was getting restless. It seemed like everyone around her was doing it... and having fun doing it, too. She didn t want to become the campus slut or anything, but surely there was a difference between a trashy skank and a nice girl with a little experience. Perhaps it was time to stop relying on fate to guide her and instead take matters into her own hands. And with that realization, Jen decided to find the one and lose her virginity, although not necessarily in that order... Nicki Elson has created a heroine that everyone will cheer for as she comes of age in the mid-1980s. Whether you lived through the decade and survived the bad hair and acid-wash jeans, or just heard the wild stories, readers of all ages will identify with Jen Whitney as she searches for the one, enjoying her romantic ups and downs, made even more entertaining by Nicki Elson s amusingly wry sense of humor.

Book Dick and Jane

Download or read book Dick and Jane written by William H. Elson and published by . This book was released on 2015-03-15 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a reprint of the original Dick and Jane book published in 1930 as one of the Elson-Gray Readers. This book was published by William H. Elson (1856-1935) and William S. Gray (1885-1960). It was a revised version of the series of Elson Readers that were being published by 1909. Before the Elston Readers there were the McGuffy Readers starting in 1881. The McGuffy Readers showed a picture of a cat chasing a rat with the sentence "The Cat and the Rat Ran." These readers were used universally in schools for 40 years. The Elston Readers starting in 1909 had more of a story line and avoided unpleasant but realistic pictures of cats eating rats. It had a short list of repeatable words. This was a series of readers with different stories for different grade levels. Dick and Jane were just two of the characters but they were the ones who seemed to catch on. However, other stories became famous such as "The Little Engine that Could."

Book Reading the Fascicles of Emily Dickinson

Download or read book Reading the Fascicles of Emily Dickinson written by Eleanor Elson Heginbotham and published by Ohio State University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heginbotham's book focuses on Emily Dickinson's work as a deliberate writer and editor. The fascicles were forty small portfolios of her poems written between 1856 and 1864, composed on four to seven stationery sheets, folded, stacked, and sewn together with twine. What revelations might come from reading her poems in her own context? Are they simply "scrapbooks," as some claim, or are they evidence of conscious, canny editing? Read in their original places, each lyric becomes different-and more interesting-than when read in isolation. We cannot know why Dickinson compiled the books or what she thought of them, but we can observe what she left in them. What she left is visible only by noting the way the poem answers in a dialogue across the pages, the way lines spilling onto a second page introduce the next poem, the way openings suggest image clusters so that each book has its own network of concerns and language-not a story or philosophical preachment but an aesthetic wholeness. This book is the first to demonstrate that Dickinson's poetic and philosophical creativity is most startling when the reader observes the individual lyric in the poet's own, and only, context for them. For teacher, student, scholar, and poetry lover, Heginbotham creates an important new framework for understanding one of the most complex, clever, and profound U.S. poets.

Book The Tapestry Shop

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joyce Elson Moore
  • Publisher : Five Star
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 9781594148996
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book The Tapestry Shop written by Joyce Elson Moore and published by Five Star. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tapestry Shop, by Joyce Elson Moore, is an historical novel based on the life of Adam de la Halle, a poet/musician who left behind a vast collection of secular compositions. While researching Adam's music, Moore discovered a little-known fact; the earliest version of the Robin Hood legend may have been Adam's play, Le Jeu de Robin et Marion. Because Adam was patronized by royalty, his play was probably performed in English courts, and would have changed, as legends do. In the retelling, Robin became an English hero, and Robin's companions became the Merry Men. The book draws the reader into the Middle Ages, where women joined the crusades and students held discourse on the Street of Straw, but the overriding appeal of The Tapestry Shop may be Adam's connection to the popular legend of Robin Hood, the celebrated outlaw who was immortalized in later ballads, and who continues to draw fans around the world to films that center on this elusive hero.
