Book excerpt: Elsie is a city girl. She loves the noise of the cobbled streets of Boston. But when her mother dies and her father moves them to the faraway prairies of Nebraska, Elsie hears only the silence, and she feels alone in the wide sea of grass. Her only comfort is her canary, Timmy Tune. But when Timmy flies out the window, Elsie is forced to run after him, into the tall grass of the prairie, where she's finally able to hear the voice of the prairie-beautiful and noisy- and she begins to feel at home. Jane Yolen and David Small create a remarkable, poetic, vividly rendered book about finding one's place in the world.

Download or read book Three Things About Elsie written by Joanna Cannon and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling author of The Trouble with Goats and Sheep delivers a suspenseful and emotionally satisfying novel “infused with warmth and humor” (People) about a lifelong friendship, a devastating secret, and the small acts of kindness that bring people together. There are three things you should know about Elsie. The first thing is that she’s my best friend. The second is that she always knows what to say to make me feel better. And the third thing…might take a bit more explaining. Eighty-four-year-old Florence has fallen in her flat at Cherry Tree Home for the Elderly. As she waits to be rescued, she thinks about her friend Elsie and wonders if a terrible secret from their past is about to come to light. If the charming new resident is who he claims to be, why does he look exactly like a man who died sixty years ago? From the acclaimed, bestselling author of The Trouble with Goats and Sheep, Three Things About Elsie “breathes with suspense, providing along the way piercing, poetic descriptions, countless tiny mysteries, and breathtaking little reveals…a rich portrait of old age and friendship stretched over a fascinating frame” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review). This is an “amusing and heartbreaking” (Publishers Weekly) story about forever friends on the twisting path of life who come to understand how the fine threads of humanity connect us all.

Book excerpt: This book is basically a journey from nothingness, to becoming a happy and caring person who trusts the Lord’s plans. This will show you how to live and be Joyful and Free. It is a short story, but I hope that it inspires others see that truly there can be a new and wonderful life ahead of you. For any questions my email is: [email protected] I wrote this book to help people have a new real free life. It’s kind of about me(although i didn’t go into a coma), and then about a future. I always felt like a nothing I didn’t have many friends even through high school but I did love my dogs and bunnies and all animals. I wanted to write a book about a nothing person who actually becomes a giraffe a dil. You might think she is weird—I guess I thought of that because I love giraffes and daffodils... Basically about going from nothingness to a happy person, and has some information about Jesus, because He can get us out of worry and anxiety, pity parties and then be joyful and calm with all people. My desire was to write this book and to let you know YOU all can have a free, calm, and joyful life. Yes really! So I hope reading this book will encourage you to have a positive life or help someone else who’s having problems. Thank you.

Book excerpt: This fresh look at Hollywood's "Queen of Screwball," Carole Lombard, presents a first-ever examination of the events that led to the shocking flight mishap that took her life on the side of a Nevada mountain in 1942. It also provides a day-by-day account of the struggles of Lombard's husband, Clark Gable, and other family, friends, and fans to cope with the tragedy. In effect, having just completed the first sale of war bonds and stamps in the nation following its entry into World War II, Lombard became the first Hollywood start to sacrifice her life in the War. The War Department offered Gable a funeral service with full military honors, but he refused it, knowing that his wife would not approve of such spectacle. Based on extensive research rather than gossip, this investigation further explores the lives of the 21 others on the plane, including 15 members of the U.S. Army Air Corps, and addresses one of the most enduring mysteries of World War II. On a clear night full of stars, with TWA's most experienced pilot at the controls of a 10-month-old aircraft under the power of two fully functioning engines, why did the flight crash into that Nevada mountainside? This gripping page-turner presents the story of the people on the plane, the friends and families left behind, and the heroic first responders who struggled up a mountain hoping to perform a miracle rescue. It is a story of accomplishment, bravery, sacrifice, and loss.

Download or read book Butterfly Dance written by Sabra Kiani and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does a young woman, who hears but cannot speak, end up as the director, choreographer, and premiere danseuse for a world famous school and dance company for (believe it or not) deaf and mute dancers? Our heroine, Lynette Barker, is blessed with parents who are wealthy, successful actors, a fine home and servants. Unfortunately, when she is found to be mute, her mother denies her existence and her father sees her as "broken" and, blind to her needs, leaves her in the care of the servants. It was left to Lynette to find her own way and, with the loving support of the housekeeper, and butler, and two deaf friends whom she had found signing in the park, she was able to enter a school for the deaf and begin to joyfully live and learn as she had always wished. Lynette's father, Belton Barker, a renowned actor, busied himself with his career and his wife and not only never saw what was going on in his daughter's life, but managed to continually block her from doing what she needed to do. The ongoing struggle is devastating for Lynette and the last battle with her father - and her mother who tries to kill her - leaves her in the hospital in full pscyhologist retreat. Her father, finally realizing his culpability and fearful for her life, finally listens to the servants, teachers, and friends, who have kept a round-the-clock vigil at the hospital and begins to see who his daughter really is - a whole, quite wonderful person - and plans to help her develop the life she wants. Lynette is so angry with him that she will not accept anything from him directly but he remembers that at the sound of any music Lynette has danced since she could walk so he arranges for a young woman, who has found a way to teach the deaf to dance, to teach in Lynette's school and thus begins her career. Lynette finally discovers that it was her father who made all this possible for her and they become reconciled. Having found a way to do what she loves most, Lynette trains hard and learns to be a dancer and choreographer and finally, along with her two friends, Dan as Business Manager (and later husband), and Elsie as costumer, opens a school of dance and a dance company for deaf and mute dancers. With the addition of other dancers and teachers, the school/dance company becomes an unprecedented success and because of their unusual focus and teaching methods they become internationally known. Where they go from here is an open question.
