Book Elsevier s Dictionary of Hydrology and Water Quality Management

Download or read book Elsevier s Dictionary of Hydrology and Water Quality Management written by J. D. van der Tuin and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. The freshwater environment constitutes the main subject of this dictionary. In addition to the quantitative and physical aspects of hydrology and water management, due attention has been paid to chemical and biological properties and qualitative aspects of surface and subsurface waters. The scope is relatively wide, also including relevant terms from science and engineering. As far as the depth of the coverage goes, some limitations had to be set, for example, on terms related to sedimentology and oceanography. The scope does not extend beyond the tidal limit, i.e. terms on seawater, sea waves and tides are included only as far as they affect the quantities or qualities of inland waters.

Book Encyclopedia of Hydrology and Water Resources

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Hydrology and Water Resources written by Reginald W. Herschy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-07-31 with total page 793 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fresh water supplies of the Earth are finite and as the world's population continues to grow humanity's thirst for this water seems unquenchable. Intense pressure is being exerted upon freshwater resources and a lack of adequate clean water is seen as one of the most serious global problems for the 21st century. Indeed it has been said that the next war will be fought over water, not oil. Human health and the health of supporting ecosystems increasingly depends upon our ability to find, control, manage and understand water. In a single volume, The Encyclopedia of Hydrology and Water Resources provides the reader with a comprehensive overview and understanding of the diverse field of hydrology. The intimate inclusion of material on water resources emphasizes the practical applications of this field, applications which are indispensable in any modern approach to the subject. This volume is a vital reference for all hydrologists, hydrogeologists and water engineers worldwide, whether they are concerned with the exploitation of new sources of water, the protection and management of existing reserves, or the science of surface water and groundwater flow. 114 eminent scientists from 17 countries worldwide have contributed to this authoritative volume. Superbly illustrated throughout, it includes almost 300 entries on a range of key topics, including arid and semi-arid zones, climates and climate change, floods and droughts, desertification, entropy, flow measurement, groundwater, hydrological cycle, hydrological models, infiltration, karst hydrology, paleohydrology, precipitation, remote sensing, river pollution prevention, rivers, lakes and seas, satellite hydrology, soil erosion, water treatment, water use, weather radar, and world water balance.

Book Elsevier s Dictionary of Soil Science

Download or read book Elsevier s Dictionary of Soil Science written by A. Canarache and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-10-17 with total page 1355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dictionary includes some 9200 terms, each with a definition and often and additional descriptive text in English, the terms being translated in French, German and Spanish. It is more complete than similar previously published dictionaries or glossaries, and contains all fields of soil science as well as some adjacent fields of other earth sciences, agriculture and engineering. Present concepts and definitions are detailed along with earlier concepts, not only for historical reasons but also for developing new ideas. Concepts, terms and definitions usual in literature of various countries are discussed and compared, to offer an appropriate exchange of ideas. Soil classifications and methodologies for soil investigation coming from a score of European, American and other countries and international organisations are presented, and correlations between names of soil taxa in different classifications are suggested. Readers active in all branches of soil science will find accessible answers to many of their questions, either directly referring to procedures used in the organisations where they work, or related to way of thinking in other countries. Readers active in other branches, but needing information on soils, will also find answers to this dictionary of great assistance to their research. * Over 9200 terms with definitions in English and translations in French, German, Spanish* Includes all fields of soil science and many connected sciences* All present-day terminology with inclusion of earlier, classical concepts and terms * Terminology in current USDA Soil Taxonomy, FAO World Reference Base or Soil Resources, and other documents from different countriesGranted the "N.Cernescu" award from the Romanian Academy on Agricultural and Forestry Sciences

Book excerpt: Hydrogeology: Principles and Practice provides a comprehensive introduction to the study of hydrogeology to enable the reader to appreciate the significance of groundwater in meeting current and future water resource challenges. This new edition has been thoroughly updated to reflect advances in the field since 2004. The book presents a systematic approach to understanding groundwater. Earlier chapters explain the fundamental physical and chemical principles of hydrogeology, and later chapters feature groundwater investigation techniques in the context of catchment processes, as well as chapters on groundwater quality and contaminant hydrogeology. Unique features of the book are chapters on the applications of environmental isotopes and noble gases in the interpretation of aquifer evolution, and on regional characteristics such as topography, compaction and variable fluid density in the explanation of geological processes affecting past, present and future groundwater flow regimes. The last chapter discusses groundwater resources and environmental management, and examines the role of groundwater in integrated river basin management, including an assessment of possible adaptation responses to the impacts of climate change. Throughout the text, boxes and a set of colour plates drawn from the authors’ teaching and research experience are used to explain special topics and to illustrate international case studies ranging from transboundary aquifers and submarine groundwater discharge to the over-pressuring of groundwater in sedimentary basins. The appendices provide conversion tables and useful reference material, and include review questions and exercises, with answers, to help develop the reader’s knowledge and problem-solving skills in hydrogeology. This accessible textbook is essential reading for undergraduate and graduate students primarily in earth sciences, environmental sciences and physical geography with an interest in hydrogeology or groundwater science. The book will also find use among practitioners in hydrogeology, soil science, civil engineering and planning who are involved in environmental and resource protection issues requiring an understanding of groundwater. Book Dictionary of Hydrology and Water Resources

Download or read book Dictionary of Hydrology and Water Resources written by Gordon Stanger and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-06-06 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book has its origin when I was an academic at Flinders University. Some Australian students, and many overseas students, seemed to be having difficulty with the jargon. To overcome this obstacle I started giving a glossary as a hand-out of a few pages. With each successive year the glossary expanded more and more until it reached the stage when I thought I might as well turn it into a technical dictionary for the benefit of both students and the many in-career professionals. The first edition was quite well received, but that was 20 years ago, and it is now starting to look distinctly dated. Also, in the intervening period the entire jargon of the water sector has expanded and evolved so, in response to several peoples suggestion of a revise3d updated and expanded edition, here it is.
