Book Water Quality Assessment and Macrophyte Control Feasibility for Eloika Lake Washington

Download or read book Water Quality Assessment and Macrophyte Control Feasibility for Eloika Lake Washington written by Lori A. Campbell and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Eloika Lake, WA was once characterized as a clear and beautiful ake. Its shores were first homesteaded in the late 1800's with logging as a primary enterprise in the drainage basin. Sawmill operations both upstream and around the lake resulted in the accumulation of small logs, sediment and other debris on the bottom, making it shallower. Filling of the lake basin and lowering the lake's surface has allowed for increased light penetration to the bottom, promoting extensive growth of macrophyte plants. Today, much of the lake's surface is covered by macrophytes. In January of 1987, a year long study of Eloika Lake was undertaken to establish a baseline of water quality, to characterize the lake's macrophyte problem and to recommend feasible control measures. The aquatic macrophyte community of Eloika Lake occupied most of the lake's bottom during the growing season. Standing crops were highest between the 1 and 4 meter depths. The macrophyte community was dominated by two Potamogeton species and diversity was low with over 99 percent of the estimated biomass produced by five organisms. Of the macrophyte control methods evaluated, water level control was the most feasible considering cost and long term effectiveness. Harvesting, rotovating, dredging and chemical approaches were found to e costly, and have short term benefit. Grass carp may have potential as an effective macrophyte biocontrol. However, the stocking of this phytophagus fish is currently illegal in the state of Washington. Substrate blanketing was determined to be most practical for use around docks and beaches, but wide scale application would be cost prohibitive"--Document.
