Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elmo's Model Speaker for Platform, School and Home: Arranged on an Entirely New Plan; Providing Programmes for Twelve Evening Entertainment Selections Suitable for Juvenile Gatherings, Brief Responses to Encores; Speeches for Weddings, Presentations, Farewells and Welcomes The following pages have been compiled with a view of providing speakers and readers with a well-tested selection of pieces suitable for platform, school and home. Every selection in this volume has been tested by repeated readings before numerous audiences. Great care has been exercised in gathering from an enormous quantity of material only that which is best. Special attention has been paid to the arrange ment of these pieces. The experience of twenty years of public speaking and reading has suggested the necessity of care in the arrangement of the programmes. Many an even ing's entertainment has been utterly spoiled by injudiciously reading the right piece at the wrong time. Audiences are often thought to be exceedingly capricious when in fact they are acting most naturally. It is not reasonable to expect that a company of men and women who have just been con vulsed with laughter at some intensely humorous reading will be prepared without a moment's pause to listen appreciatingly to some story of pathos. The programmes of this Model Speaker have been carefully arranged with a view to the best order of subjects for an evening's entertainment, beginning generally with some historic or pastoral story, leading on to some pathetic strain, leaving the humor invariably to the end of the programme. The programmes are divided couve niently so that there are practically twenty-four programmes. 'selections suitable for Juvenile Gatherings will be found at the end of the book, with a number of brief pieces to be used as answers to encores. A series of speeches appropriate for special occasions, and a list of Themes suitable for essays or debate, close the volume. A detailed index to contents will render reference easy. Book excerpt: 'Eden: An Episode' is a novel written by Edgar Saltus. The story begins with a rumor and the man in the center of it all: John Usselex. After his engagement to Miss Menemon is made public, people gossip about him—spreading tales of him having a different name and a past tending geese in Bavaria to being an outlaw and fleeing from the death penalty in Denmark, to having fled from creditors in Vienna. Nobody is quite sure about the truth, and Usselex himself seems to have no interest in setting the records straight.

Book Home Is Where the Eggs Are

Download or read book Home Is Where the Eggs Are written by Molly Yeh and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER From the host of Food Network’s Girl Meets Farm and bestselling author of the IACP award-winning Molly on the Range, a collection of cozy recipes that feel like celebrations. Home Is Where the Eggs Are is a beautiful, intimate book full of food that’s best enjoyed in the comfort of sweatpants and third-day hair, by a beloved Food Network host and new mom living on a sugar beet farm in East Grand Forks, MN. Molly Yeh’s cooking is built to fit into life with her baby, Bernie, and the naptimes, diaper changes, and wiggle time that come with having a young child, making them a breeze to fit into any sort of schedule, no matter how busy. They’re low-maintenance dishes that are satisfying to make for weeknight meals to celebrate empty to-do lists after long workdays, cozy Sunday soups to simmer during the first (or seventh!) snowfall of the year, and desserts that will keep happily under the cake dome for long enough that you will never feel pressure to share. The flavors in this book draw inspiration from a distinctive blend of Molly’s experiences—her Chinese and Jewish heritage, her time living in New York, her husband’s Scandinavian heritage, and their farm in the upper Midwest. She uses seasonal ingredients that are common in her region while singlehandedly supporting the za’atar and sumac import industry in her small town. These influences come together into fuss-free crave-able meals that dirty as few dishes as possible and offer loads of prep-ahead, freezing, and substitution tips, such as: Babka Cereal Mozzarella Stick Salad Doughnut Matzo Brei Ham and Potato Pizza Chicken and Stars Soup Orange Blossom Creamsicle Smoothies Hand-pulled Noodles with Potsticker Filling Sauce Marzipan Chocolate Chip Cookies In Home Is Where the Eggs Are, the feeling of home starts in the kitchen; just melt some butter, fry an egg, and build a little memory around it.

Book Your Inner Fish

  • Author : Neil Shubin
  • Publisher : Vintage
  • Release : 2008-01-15

  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Your Inner Fish written by Neil Shubin and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2008-01-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paleontologist and professor of anatomy who co-discovered Tiktaalik, the “fish with hands,” tells a “compelling scientific adventure story that will change forever how you understand what it means to be human” (Oliver Sacks). By examining fossils and DNA, he shows us that our hands actually resemble fish fins, our heads are organized like long-extinct jawless fish, and major parts of our genomes look and function like those of worms and bacteria. Your Inner Fish makes us look at ourselves and our world in an illuminating new light. This is science writing at its finest—enlightening, accessible and told with irresistible enthusiasm.
