Cracking occurs in one area of the east elevation of the central block. Areas of mortar deterioration and separation of mortar from bricks occur randomly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty National Monument, Vol. 4: Historic Structure Report, Units 2, 3 and 4; Part Two The office building and the mortuary building were constructed during the fall of 1908 through the spring of 1909 and were opened for occupancy in June of 1911 as part of the new Island 3 hospital complex. This complex was developed out of a growing need for contagious disease facilities on Ellis Island; contagious disease cases having been sent, since the 18905, to the New York City Health Department. In June 1902, George W. Stoner, surgeon in charge of the medical division, urged the construction of a separate pavilion containing isolation and observation wards for contagious diseases. In. September cfif that year, the recommendation for the construction of a contagious disease hospital on Ellis Island became an urgent matter: the New York City Health Department had informed immigration officials of its intention to terminate its contract for receiving aliens with contagious diseases. Plans were immediately undertaken for the construction of a new 3 acre island located about 800 feet southwest of the existing Ellis Island on which the new contagious disease hospital would be built. It documents the historic development and present condition of buildings on the south half of the Island including the ferry house, hospital outbuilding, psychopathic ward, nmfixx hospital building, administration building and new hospital extension of Unit 2; the office building, mortuary, powerhouse and laundry building, eight measles ward buildings, administration building, kitchen, three isolation ward buildings and staff house of Unit 3; and the immigrant building, recreation building and shelter of Unit 4, as well as the ferry and removed structures, the surgeon's house and red cross building. The buildings of Unit 1 have been documented in separate historic structure reports. The twenty-six extant buildings, as well as the connecting ways and corridors located within Units 2, 3 and 4, form an interconnected grouping. Built as hospital immigration station and support buildings, they formed, with the Unit 1 buildings, an integrated complex of structures and were functionally interdependent.
