Download or read book Programming ALGOL written by D. J. Malcolme-Lawes and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Programming — ALGOL describes the basics of computer programming using Algol. Commands that could be added to Algol and could increase its scope are described, including multiplication and division and the use of brackets. The idea of labeling or naming a command is also explained, along with a command allowing two alternative results. Most of the important features of Algol syntax are discussed, and examples of compound statements (that is, sets of commands enclosed by a begin ... end command) are given. Comprised of 11 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to the digital computer and how it works using a list of instructions known as a program. The "punched-tape" method of feeding information into a computer is described together with the flexowriter. The next chapter provides an overview of Algol by studying a very simple program and comparing it with the same sequence of instructions written in normal English. The third chapter is about building a program, first by increasing the complexity of the actual computation and then economizing on memory stores. Subsequent chapters focus on how computer programs can be built up of simple commands; labeling or naming a command; facilities in the Algol language which allow the addition of a second alternative command to an if ... then statement; and the use of a flow diagram to translate a problem into Algol. The final chapter examines the method of running a program on a computer. This monograph will be of interest to computer programmers.
Download or read book Language Change and Generative Grammar written by Ellen Brandner and published by Linguistische Berichte Sonderhefte. This book was released on 1996-12 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ellen Brandner, Gisella Ferraresi The strong connection between language change and language acquisition has been known for a long time in traditional linguistics. But what is the reason why a child's grammar differs from that of his or her environ ment? Can we say that there are some principles which govern this change? Many linguists have tried to answer these important questions from different view points. We will sketch he re some of the most interesting ones. Sapir (1921) develops the principle of drift which was meant to describe the laws of diachronic change in linguistic systems. This concerns long-term tendencies of gram matical change, which probably are of universal character but result in one or another effect, according to the specific structure of a given language. The tendencies concerning syntactical change are determined by morphological change; morphological change, for its part, is determined by phonological change. All such instances of change aim at the one and only goal to always provide sufficient means for expressing all those grammatical relations which are necessary to keep up communication.
Download or read book Contemporary Composers On Contemporary Music written by Elliott Schwartz and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2009-06-16 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology of essays, interviews, and autobiographical pieces provides an invaluable overview of the evolution of contemporary music—from chromaticism, serialism, and indeterminacy to jazz, vernacular, electronic, and non-Western influences. Featuring classic essays by Stravinsky, Stockhausen, and Reich, as well as writings by lesser-known but equally innovative composers such as Jack Beeson, Richard Maxfield, and T. J. Anderson, this collection covers a broad range of styles and approaches. Here you will find Busoni's influential "Sketch of a New Esthetic of Music"; Partch's exploration of a new notation system; Babbitt's defense of advanced composition in his controversial "Who Cares If You Listen?"; and Pauline Oliveros's meditations on sound. Now updated with fifteen new composers including Michael Tippet, György Ligeti, Gunther Schuller, Ben Johnston, Sofia Gubaidulina, and William Bolcom, this important book gathers together forty-nine pieces—many out of print and some newly written for this volume—which serve as a documentary history of twentieth-century music, in theory and practice. Impassioned, provocative, and eloquent, these writings are as exciting and diverse as the music they discuss.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting important trends in the field of stochastic analysis, this collection of thirteen articles provides an overview of recent developments and new results. Written by leading experts in the field, the articles cover a wide range of topics, ranging from an alternative set-up of rigorous probability to the sampling of conditioned diffusions. Applications in physics and biology are treated, with discussion of Feynman formulas, intermittency of Anderson models and genetic inference. A large number of the articles are topical surveys of probabilistic tools such as chaining techniques, and of research fields within stochastic analysis, including stochastic dynamics and multifractal analysis. Showcasing the diversity of research activities in the field, this book is essential reading for any student or researcher looking for a guide to modern trends in stochastic analysis and neighbouring fields.
Download or read book Inexhaustibility written by Torkel Franzén and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-30 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since their inception, the Perspectives in Logic and Lecture Notes in Logic series have published seminal works by leading logicians. Many of the original books in the series have been unavailable for years, but they are now in print once again. This volume, the sixteenth publication in the Lecture Notes in Logic series, gives a sustained presentation of a particular view of the topic of Gödelian extensions of theories. It presents the basic material in predicate logic, set theory and recursion theory, leading to a proof of Gödel's incompleteness theorems. The inexhaustibility of mathematics is treated based on the concept of transfinite progressions of theories as conceived by Turing and Feferman. All concepts and results are introduced as needed, making the presentation self-contained and thorough. Philosophers, mathematicians and others will find the book helpful in acquiring a basic grasp of the philosophical and logical results and issues.
Download or read book Third Factory written by Виктор Шкловский and published by Dalkey Archive Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like many of Shklovsky's works, Third Factory is not easily classified. In part it is a memoir of the three "Factories" that influenced his development as a human being and as a writer, yet the events depicted within the book are fictionalised and conveyed with the poetic verve and playfulness of form that have made Shklovsky a major figure in twentieth-century world literature. In addition to its fictional and biographical elements, Third Factory includes anecdotes, rants, social satire, literary theory, and anything else that Shklovsky, with an artist's unerring confidence, chooses to include.

Download or read book A Sentimental Journey written by Viktor Shklovskiĭ and published by Commonwealth Secretariat. This book was released on 2004 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viktor Shklovsky's "A Sentimental Journey," which borrows its title from Laurence Sterne, describes the travels of a bewildered intellectual through Russia, Persia, the Ukraine, and the Caucasus during the period of the Russian Revolution. Valuable as a historical document for its first-hand account of the events during the period of 1917-1922, "A Sentimental Journey" is also an important experimental literary work--a memoir in the form of a novel. At times lyrical, disturbing, ironic, and erudite, "A Sentimental Journey" is a singular book from one of the most recognizable and influential voices of twentieth-century Russian literature.
Download or read book Vibration Problems in Structures written by Hugo Bachmann and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authors: Hugo Bachmann, Walter J. Ammann, Florian Deischl, Josef Eisenmann, Ingomar Floegl, Gerhard H. Hirsch, Günter K. Klein, Göran J. Lande, Oskar Mahrenholtz, Hans G. Natke, Hans Nussbaumer, Anthony J. Pretlove, Johann H. Rainer, Ernst-Ulrich Saemann, Lorenz Steinbeisser. Large structures such as factories, gymnasia, concert halls, bridges, towers, masts and chimneys can be detrimentally affected by vibrations. These vibrations can cause either serviceability problems, severely hampering the user's comfort, or safety problems. The aim of this book is to provide structural and civil engineers working in construction and environmental engineering with practical guidelines for counteracting vibration problems. Dynamic actions are considered from the following sources of vibration: - human body motions, - rotating, oscillating and impacting machines, - wind flow, - road traffic, railway traffic and construction work. The main section of the book presents tools that aid in decision-making and in deriving simple solutions to cases of frequently occurring "normal" vibration problems. Complexer problems and more advanced solutions are also considered. In all cases these guidelines should enable the engineer to decide on appropriate solutions expeditiously. The appendices of the book contain fundamentals essential to the main chapters.
