Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elizabethan Ulster The Ulster Prince, attired in a splendid robe valued at 65, and presented to him by the King, was led into the Queen's chamber at Greenwich by the Earls of Oxford and Hertford. The room was hung with cloth of Arras and luxuriously strewn with rushes. The Viscount Lisle bore o'neil's sword. O'neil then knelt on the rushes, while the King girt on his sword, hung round his neck a gold chain valued at 60, and handed him his patent as Earl of Tyrone, together with 100 marks as pocket money. O'neil then made a suitable, reply in Irish, and the whole party adjourned to the more congenial function of a banquet, where tongues were doubtless still further loosened. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elizabethan Ireland: Native and English The historical importance of the Elizabethan period in Ireland is incalculable. It was the period when an alien Government, threatened by the growth of new, and the rejuvenescence of Old, dangers, deliberately determined upon imparting to the physical aspect Of the country, and the political and social institutions Of its people, the impress of their modern form. The period during which all the differences that for upwards Of three centuries have plagued the country, and strained every interest connected with it, had their inception. Truly a seed time, Of which subse quent generations have reaped the harvest. In England it was an era Of adventure and land hunger. A phase in the literary and exploratory activity Of the time. Men's minds were in amed by visions Of an unattainable material prosperity, and possessed by a passion for new discoveries and the planting Of settlements. Unfortunately for those to whom this planting Of settlements meant removal from their ancestral homes, undisguised ruthlessness reigned supreme everywhere. Inhumanity was common to all nations and every sect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Rebellion of 1641: With a History of the Events Which Led Up to and Succeeded It The following pages, in continuance of the volume devoted to Elizabethan Ulster, aim at carrying on the history of the province up to the time of the Cromwellian Settle ment. In the middle of the path along which the narrative travels stands the Irish rising of 1641. Many writers, in a generous reluctance to lay bare the details of that rising, have skirted the subject and passed on to the wars beyond. Others, whose subject has been the history of the four provinces rather than of one only, have contented them selves with the recital of a few disconnected incidents which occurred during the first nine months the massacre period) of the rising. Book The History of Ulster Vol 1

Download or read book The History of Ulster Vol 1 written by Ramsay Colles and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Ulster, Vol. 1: From the Earliest Times to the Present Day F mm the very slender evidence we possess, based chie y on antiquarian research in connection with the etymology of local names, it appears that the earliest inhabitants of Ireland were of Turanian origin and known as Fomorians. How long they held possession it is impossible to discover, but they gave way before a Belgic race bearing the not very euphonious name of Firbolgs, who in their turn were con quered by a fresh tribe of invaders, the tuatha-da-danaans, said to have been of Pelasgic origin, but who are now believed to have been an Aryan Celtic race, a branch of that great stock which dominated Gaul and Spain and a large part of Southern Europe. The Danaans are said to have held the country, which they completely conquered and occupied, for one hundred and ninety years. They are a Shadowy race of whom even less is known than of their predecessors the Firbolgs, but their deeds are held to be less adumbrative than their names, for forts of earth and stone and sepulchral monuments on the River Boyne in Meath are said, with some Show of truth, to be the work of their hands. But although they were strong men and great fighters the Danaans were themselves conquered by the Milesians or Scoti, a race of warlike Celts from Spain, of which land they had been rulers for generations. This Milesian conquest seems to have been a real occurrence, notwithstanding the fact that the statements made by Keating with regard to it savour too much of romance and severely tax the credulity of his readers. For instance, we are told that the Milesians were Scythians, and that one of their leaders, Niall, married Scota, daughter of Pharaoh, and be friended Moses and the Israelites. This friendliness to a persecuted race led Pharaoh to banish Niall and his fol lowers, and after many wanderings they landed in Spain. Download or read book The plantation of Ulster written by Micheál Ó Siochrú and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first major academic study of the Ulster Plantation in over 25 years. The pivotal importance of the Plantation to the shared histories of Ireland and Britain would be difficult to overstate. It helped secure the English conquest of Ireland, and dramatically transformed Ireland’s physical, political, religious and cultural landscapes. The legacies of the Plantation are still contested to this day, but as the Peace Process evolves and the violence of the previous forty years begins to recede into memory, vital space has been created for a timely reappraisal of the plantation process and its role in identity formation within Ulster, Ireland and beyond. This collection of essays by leading scholars in the field offers an important redress in terms of the previous coverage of the plantations, moving away from an exclusive colonial perspective, to include the native Catholic experience, and in so doing will hopefully stimulate further research into this crucial episode in Irish and British history.
