Book excerpt: I'm not a grinch. I'm also not someone who cares all that much for Christmas. I am, however, more than willing to use it to my advantage. I didn't become a billionaire by playing nice. I'll leverage everything I can to get what I want. What I want is Lydia Romano. The sassy, curvy, Christmas loving stylist is running scared from the attraction between us. Without remorse or hesitation, I make an offer I know she won’t be able to refuse. I need a date for six events over the next few weeks. I’ll donate ten thousand dollars for each date she attends with me to the struggling charity she is devoted to. She counters with twenty-five thousand each date and a whole lot of hate. Deal. It's a bargain, as far as I'm concerned. I have six dates and her love of the magic of Christmas to get her to take a chance on the magic of us.

Download or read book Good Apple written by Elizabeth Passarella and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “For a woman who thinks of herself as a New Yorker at this point, I buy a lot of clothes from companies named things like Shrimp & Grits. Why? Because identity is complicated.” Elizabeth Passarella is content with being complicated. She grew up in Memphis in a conservative, Republican family with a Christian mom and a Jewish dad. Then she moved to New York, fell in love with the city—and, eventually, her husband—and changed. Sort of. While her politics have tilted to the left, she still puts her faith first—and argues that the two can go hand in hand, for what it’s worth. In this sharp and slyly profound memoir, Elizabeth shares stories about everything from conceiving a baby in an unair-conditioned garage in Florida to finding a rat in her bedroom. She upends stereotypes about Southerners, New Yorkers, and Christians, making a case that we are all flawed humans simply doing our best. Good Apple is a hilarious, welcome celebration of the absurdity, chaos, and strange sacredness of life that brings us all together, whether we have city lights or starry skies in our eyes. More importantly, it’s about the God who pursues each of us, no matter our own inconsistencies or failures, and shows us the way back home.
Download or read book written by C. Allyn Pierson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jane Austen's classic novel, "Pride and Prejudice," ends with the marriage of the Bennet sisters to their hard-won fiances, but the story of Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Darcy's life together is only beginning. "And This Our Life" is an affectionate and historically accurate sequel that chronicles the lives of the Darcys during their first year of marriage. In addition to learning to be the mistress of Pemberley, the Darcy estate, and overcoming the preconceptions of her new relatives, Elizabeth must help her young sister-in-law, Georgiana, find her way to womanhood through the maze of ritual, tradition and marital politics that is Regency-era England. Often snubbed by the first circles of society, Elizabeth strives to gain acceptance with the same grace and wit that attracted Mr. Darcy, while helping Georgiana acquire the confidence she needs to find true love and happiness, no matter what obstacles are placed in their way.

Download or read book Queen Elizabeth II and the Africans written by Raphael Chijioke Njoku and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The road to Queen Elizabeth II’s implementation of African reforms was rough, especially in the first two decades following her ascension to the throne. In this book, Raphael Chijioke Njoku examines Queen Elizabeth II’s role in the African decolonization trajectories and the postcolonial state’s quest for genuine political and economic liberation since 1947. By locating Elizabeth at the center of Anglophone Africa’s independence agitations, the account harnesses the African interests to tease out the monarch’s dilemma of complying with Whitehall’s decolonization schemes while building an inclusive and unified Commonwealth in which Africans could play a vital role. Njoku argues that to gratify British lawmakers in her complex and marginal place within the British parliamentary system of conservative versus reformist, Elizabeth’s contribution fell short of African nationalists’ expectations on account of her silence and inaction during the African decolonization raptures. Yet ultimately, the author concludes, she helped build an inclusive and unified organization in which Africans could assert and appropriate political and economic autarky.
