Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elizabeth Inchbald and Her Circle: The Life Story of a Charming Woman (1753-1821) In Mrs Inchbald's life-story I have made no attempt at a minute record. It seemed inappropriate and unnecessary. She has interested me as the real-life heroine of a real-life novel, yielding innumerable sidelights upon the age in which she lived. If I have failed to convey that interest in this little book, the fault is entirely mine. I have used James Boaden's Memoirs freely. Boaden had so much more opportunity than he seized - in his access to Mrs Inchbald sown papers - that his very omissions have an enhanced charm. I gladly acknowledge the valued help received from my old friend and colleague, Mr Henry Chance Newton, and the loan of many plays and books from his invaluable collection. This study argues that Inchbald and Hawthorne are representative of a larger British/American cultural confluence during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Book Memoirs of Emma Courtney

Download or read book Memoirs of Emma Courtney written by Mary Hays and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2000-01-25 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November of 1795, after William Godwin requested a sketch of Mary Hays’ life, she arrived at the idea of Memoirs of Emma Courtney. Godwin followed up his request with a “hint” that a fictional exploration of the painful experience she had undergone in her relationship with William Frend might help her to come to terms with it. It was to be an “instructive rather than self indulgent” work. The resulting novel is one of the most interesting and important explorations of gender-related issues of the time. Emma is exposed to a series of situations—motherlessness, orphanhood, poverty, dependence, and more—which encourage her to reflect “on the inequalities of society, the source of every misery and vice, and on the peculiar disadvanteges of my sex.” The novel quickly became viewed as “a scandalous disrobing in public” but it has endured as much on the basis of its readability as on its pointed social commentary.

  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book Nature and Art written by Elizabeth Inchbald and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2004-12-31 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nature and Art commands a central place in the history of the English Jacobin novel. Published in 1796, the story explores the opposition between the upbringing and actions of Henry Norwynne, an unspoiled "child of nature" who has been reared without books on an African island, and the corrupt conduct of his aristocratic older cousin, William. Inchbald was one of the best-known writers of her time, and Nature and Art represents her most concerted attempt to analyze the effects of education, power, and privilege on human behaviour. This Broadview edition includes a critical introduction, contemporary reviews of the novel, and primary source material relating to the novel's composition and its philosophical influences (including documents by Jean-Jacques Rousseau and William Godwin). Documents on education, political and religious corruption, and African colonization provide further historical context.
