This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elizabeth College Register, 1824-1873, With a Record of Some Earlier Students: A Chapter of Island History We see heroism broken into units, and say, - this unit did little - might as well not have been. But in this way we might break up a great army into units; we might break the sunlight into fragments and think that this or the other might be cheaply parted with. Let us rather raise a monument to the soldiers whose brave hearts only kept the ranks un broken, - a monument to the faithful who were not famous, and who are precious, as the continuity of the sunbeams is precious, though some of them fall unseen. Some may question the wisdom of dividing the record; but to have brought the Register up to date would have necessitated the inclusion of many who are yet too youthful to have made their mark, and more than this, we should have deprived the older students - for some years - perhaps for ever - of the pleasure of seeing what their school-fellows have done. Some, indeed, of those who had waited for the published record with eagerness have already been called away. We cannot wait. We believe that this first instalment of fifty Yams will prove to the world what our school has done, and we are content to hold in reserve the proof of what it is doing. We think, too, that the publication of Volume I. Will facilitate the compilation of Volume II., which we propose to commence at an early date. We have added to the Register a short notice of the masters, to whom much of the success of students in after life was due. The pages of the Elizabethan must be referred to for longerv1. Download or read book King of Critics written by Dorothy Richardson Jones and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An early advocate of art for art's sake, George Saintsbury became, for the English reader of the 1880s, the interpreter of all French literature, and later, a pioneer in comparative literature and historian of English prosody and prose rhythm. His early years at Oxford shaped his literary attitudes for life. After a decade as a schoolmaster, he was for many years a leading London journalist, then professor of English at the University of Edinburgh. Eighteen more years saw a steady flow of prefaces and essays and a history of the French novel. In "King of Critics" one meets a man of myriad literary tastes who wished to know the whole history of European literature and share it all with readers. He loved equally the purest lyrics of Shelley and the complexity of Donne, the richness of Rabelais, the panorama of Scott and medieval romance, and the profound depths of irony in Swift and Ecclesiastes, and always urged upon the reader the joys of minor writers. "King of Critics" is a fascinating study not only of Saintsbury, but of the literary world of Victorian-Edwardian England. It will appeal to a wide variety of readers, particularly those interested in biography and literary history and criticism.
Download or read book Surf and Rescue written by Patrick Moser and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2022-06-28 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mixed-race Hawaiian athlete George Freeth brought surfing to Venice, California, in 1907. Over the next twelve years, Freeth taught Southern Californians to surf and swim while creating a modern lifeguard service that transformed the beach into a destination for fun, leisure, and excitement. Patrick Moser places Freeth’s inspiring life story against the rise of the Southern California beach culture he helped shape and define. Freeth made headlines with his rescue of seven fishermen, an act of heroism that highlighted his innovative lifeguarding techniques. But he also founded California's first surf club and coached both male and female athletes, including Olympic swimming champion and “father of modern surfing” Duke Kahanamoku. Often in financial straits, Freeth persevered as a teacher and lifeguarding pioneer--building a legacy that endured long after his death during the 1919 influenza pandemic. A compelling merger of biography and sports history, Surf and Rescue brings to light the forgotten figure whose novel way of seeing the beach sparked the imaginations of people around the world.
