Book Elizabeth Buffum Chace 1806 1899 Vol 1

Download or read book Elizabeth Buffum Chace 1806 1899 Vol 1 written by Lillie Buffum Chace Wyman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elizabeth Buffum Chace, 1806-1899, Vol. 1: Her Life and Its Environment The effort in compiling these Memoirs has been to present a vivid portrayal of an earnest woman's life in its environ ment. It is believed that both life and environment were somewhat unusual; that they acted upon each other, and that both could be more perfectly understood by modern readers if an adequate record was made of each. The book is the joint production from beginning to end of the two persons whose names are given on the title-page; the impress of each is on every page; but it was the decision of the younger writer that an editorial I rather than we should be used throughout. Book Elizabeth Buffum Chace and Lillie Chace Wyman

Download or read book Elizabeth Buffum Chace and Lillie Chace Wyman written by Elizabeth C. Stevens and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At her death she was hailed as the conscience of Rhode Island: Elizabeth Buffum Chace's life (1806-1899) of public activism spanned sixty years. Having fought to abolish slavery in the years before the Civil War, Chace spearheaded the drive for women's suffrage in Rhode Island in the last decades of the 19th century. She was an associate of radical activists William Lloyd Garrison and Lucy Stone and she advocated for the rights of women and children toiling in her husband's factories. Her daughter--one of ten children--Lillie Chace Wyman (1847-1929), was an activist-writer and published short stories on social issues in Atlantic Monthly and other periodicals. An outspoken advocate of racial equality, Wyman kept the legacy of the radical antislavery movement of her mother's generation alive into the twentieth century. Since neither Chace nor Wyman left behind a collection of personal papers, this mother-daughter biography is the product of Stevens' extensive research into public and private archives to locate documents that illuminate the lives of these two remarkable women. By looking at 19th century American women's history through the lens of this activist pair, Stevens reveals some of the connections between the public and private lives of activists and examines a relationship that was at once nurturing, confining, stifling and enriching.

This book was released on 2014-01-23 with total page 972 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is part of the definitive edition of letters written by and to Charles Darwin, the most celebrated naturalist of the nineteenth century. Notes and appendixes put these fascinating and wide-ranging letters in context, making the letters accessible to both scholars and general readers. Darwin depended on correspondence to collect data from all over the world, and to discuss his emerging ideas with scientific colleagues, many of whom he never met in person. The letters are published chronologically: Volume 21 includes letters from 1873, the year in which Darwin received responses to his work on human and animal expression. Also in this year, Darwin continued his work on carnivorous plants and plant movement, finding unexpected similarities between the plant and animal kingdoms, raised a subscription for his friend Thomas Henry Huxley, and decided to employ a scientific secretary for the first time - his son Francis.

Book Ahead of Her Time Abby Kelley and the Politics of Antislavery

Download or read book Ahead of Her Time Abby Kelley and the Politics of Antislavery written by Dorothy Sterling and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 1994-06-17 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[The author] tells this remarkable story with honesty and compassion. Readers will find a wealth of new information not only about Kelley’s outstanding contribution to abolitionism but about the movements to bring about the end of slavery and to advance the cause of women.” —Mari Jo Buhle, Brown University In the tumultuous years before the Civil War, a young white woman from a Quaker background came to embody commitment to the cause of antislavery and equal rights for black people. Abby Kelley became the abolitionist movement’s chief money-raiser and organizer and its most radial member. She traveled hundreds of miles to awaken the country to the evils of slavery, braving hardship and prejudice as well as opening the way for other women, black and white, to take leadership roles. Now the full story of this principled woman has been told in Dorothy Sterling’s compelling biography.

Book Parker Pillsbury

Download or read book Parker Pillsbury written by Stacey M. Robertson and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parker Pillsbury—one of the most important and least examined antislavery activists of the nineteenth century—was a man of intense contradictions. Was he a disruptive eccentric who lashed out at authority (proclaiming Lincoln the worst president in the nation's history) or a sensitive visionary committed to social justice? In the first full-length biography of this remarkable American, Stacey M. Robertson depicts a man who became a leading voice in the antebellum period. Crisscrossing the North for twenty-five years, Pillsbury denounced slavery to all who would listen. In his travels, he often endured the violent rage of mob opposition, but he also received the passionate support of fellow advocates. Robertson's vivid portrayal of this itinerant agitator revises standard views of the antislavery movement by highlighting the interplay between activists such as Pillsbury and the national leadership, which they often challenged. She also reveals how Pillsbury—one of the nation's first male feminists—struggled to reject the notion of male dominance in his political philosophy, public activism, and personal relationships. The biography of a man devoted to justice and equality, this book places his motivations and experiences in the context of nineteenth-century social reform but never strays far from Pillsbury himself. His voice—irascible and fiery, whimsical and compassionate—offers a vivid reminder that history is the story of individual lives.
