Book excerpt: E.C. Ambrose's gritty, sharp historical fantasy series, The Dark Apostle, follows Elisha Barber through a magical reimagining of 14th-century England Elisha was once a skilled barber-surgeon, but healing is no longer his finest art. After discovering his exceptional potential for a singularly deadly magic, Elisha has slain a king, stopped a war, and even had the regency thrust upon his own commoner’s head until he could rescue the true heir, Thomas. With Thomas back on the throne of England, Elisha must now work on his king’s behalf to fight an even greater threat than civil war: the specter of the necromancers, a shadowy cabal that has already corrupted priests and princes, and that may have even grander, darker plans. Elisha travels to the continent to warn England’s allies of the mancer threat, as well as to discover the full extent of the mancers’ plans. But it soon becomes clear that if he is to have any hope of stopping those plans from coming to fruition, he must forge new alliances in unexpected places—as well as embrace the terrifying magical abilities in his possession, a move he fears will make him into just the kind of man he strives against.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We’ve all been there. Rock bottom. The end of our rope. The last straw. During hard times, it often seems like the only option is to throw in the towel. In Hope for Hard Times, author Magrey deVega examines the lives of the great biblical prophets Elijah and Elisha and reveals a consistent message in their stories: Don’t give up, and don’t lose hope. Trust that God will help you find a way. When you look closely at the accounts of Elijah and Elisha from 1 Kings 17 to 2 Kings 8, you will find amazing stories of God’s provision. God provides for Elijah, as he faces down opposition in a mountaintop showdown and when he feels alone and ready to give up while hiding in a cave listening for God’s still, small voice. God provides for Elisha, when he brings healing to Naaman and when he is surrounded by enemies and praying for spiritual eyes to be opened to hope. There is hope for you in hard times. Your story of hurt, heartache, and hopelessness has been heard, and God has a message for you. Read these stories, pray through them, and listen as you receive encouragement and guidance for whatever you are facing today. Open your eyes, and open your hands. For just like ravens at the Brook Cherith, God is with you, giving you everything you need. The Leader Guide contains everything needed to guide a group through the four-week study including session plans, activities, and discussion questions, as well as multiple format options.

Book The Characters of Elijah and Elisha and the Deuteronomic Evaluation of Prophecy

Download or read book The Characters of Elijah and Elisha and the Deuteronomic Evaluation of Prophecy written by Roy L. Heller and published by T&T Clark. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roy L. Heller looks at the prophets Elijah and Elisha in the books of Kings charting a two-fold characterization that portrays these prophetic figures in both positive and negative lights. In the narratives of Kings Elijah and Elisha often parallel other prophetic figures from Israel's history: they perform miraculous signs, they speak in the name of God, and they pronounce judgments upon the nation of Israel for its idolatrous worship. There are, however, other stories which have troubled readers and scholars alike: Elijah's cowardly running from the threats of Jezebel, his self-pitying complaint to God that he was the only true Israelite left, and Elisha's cursing a group of little boys who, in turn, are slaughtered by two female bears. Scholars have traditionally ignored or belittled the negative stories of the prophets, seeing them as either late additions to the biblical text or as minor, unimportant stories that can easily be dismissed. Heller, however, argues that the dual characterization of Elijah and Elisha reflects an ambivalent attitude that the narrator of Kings has toward prophecy as a whole, an attitude that is reflected in the book of Deuteronomy itself. This forces readers of the biblical text to pose the question; “how may Israel best know and follow God?” The stories of Elijah and Elisha make the answer clear: the words and lives of the prophets are a possible way for God to reveal how Israel is to live, but those words and lives must always be considered with a degree of suspicion and must always be evaluated in light of the clear and straightforward teaching of Deuteronomy.

Download or read book Elijah and Elisha written by Titus Chu and published by . This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elijah and Elisha were two of the greatest prophets in the Old Testament. Their lives included many extraordinary events, such as the contest between Elijah and the prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel. They also performed a number of notable miracles, including raising people from the dead, calling down fire from heaven, and dividing the waters of the Jordan. At the same time, we can see in their lives many ways in which the Lord worked with them, causing them to grow in their relationship with Him and training them for their service unto Him. Thus, while we may never have such dramatic experiences as they did, we can still draw from their lives many valuable lessons for our own Christian life and service. In this completely revised edition of Elijah & Elisha, Titus Chu considers these lessons and applies them for us today. From Chapter 1, "God's Purpose and Mankind's Failure" " Elijah and Elisha were the greatest of God's prophets. Their experiences were profound, and their lives were meaningful. Most readers of the Bible don't expect to experience what they experienced. However, they are presented as people just like us-people who grew and developed until they became useful to God (James 5:17). If we cooperate with God to grow and develop as they did, we also shall live for God's testimony and become manifest for the fulfillment of His purpose." Chapter Titles Preface 1.
