Book excerpt: With the publication of Elijah Visible, Thane Rosenbaum emerged as a fresh and important new voice on the American literary scene, a young writer in the great Jewish storytelling tradition of Isaac Bashevis Singer and Isaac Babel. In this haunting debut, Rosenbaum weaves together nine postmodern tales about Adam Posner, a young man determined to climb the American corporate ladder, who finds himself paralyzed by he legacy of the Holocaust. Encumbered by the psychic screams of his deceased parents, Posner embodies the disintegration, as well as the spiritual search, of the modern Jewish family. Rosenbaum's stunning portrait of the post-Holocaust world will resonate with contemporary readers of all backgrounds.

Book The Mantle of Elijah

Download or read book The Mantle of Elijah written by Terence Collins and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 1993 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to current trends in the study of the biblical prophets. It surveys the growing volume of work that has been on the redactional analysis of individual books and represents the first attempt to bring together these different strands of redaction criticism and to evaluate the effect they have had on our appreciation of the prophetical books as a distinct genre. The opening chapter deals with the methodology of redaction criticism as applicable to the prophetical books. The author then looks at the redactional history of each of the individual books in turn. The closing chapters consider the implications this approach has for our appreciation of these books and the aims of the writers who created them. In particular, the author draws attention to the literary nature of the image of The Prophet conveyed in the books about prophets.

Book Practical Induction

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elijah Millgram
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 1997
  • ISBN : 9780674695979
  • Pages : 204 pages

Download or read book Practical Induction written by Elijah Millgram and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical reasoning is not just a matter of determining how to get what you want, but of working out what to want in the first place. In Practical Induction Elijah Millgram argues that experience plays a central role in this process of deciding what is or is not important or worth pursuing. He takes aim at instrumentalism, a view predominant among philosophers today, which holds that the goals of practical reasoning are basic in the sense that they are given by desires that are not themselves the product of practical reasoning. The view Millgram defends is "practical induction," a method of reasoning from experience similar to theoretical induction. What are the practical observations that teach us what to want? Millgram suggests they are pleasant and unpleasant experiences on the basis of which we form practical judgments about particular cases. By generalizing from these judgments--that is, by practical induction--we rationally arrive at our views about what matters. Learning new priorities from experience is necessary if we are to function in a world of ever-changing circumstances. And we need to be able to learn both from our own and from others' experience. It is this, Millgram contends, that explains the cognitive importance of both our capacity for pain and pleasure and our capacity for love. Pleasure's role in cognition is not that of a goal but that of a guide. Love's role in cognition derives from its relation to our trusting the testimony of others about what does and does not matter and about what merits our desire. Itself a pleasure to read, this book is full of inventive arguments and conveys Millgram's bold thesis with elegance and force. It will alter the direction of current debates on practical reasoning.

Book Raising Elijah

Download or read book Raising Elijah written by Sandra Steingraber and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2011-03-29 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nothing could be more important than the health of our children, and no one is better suited to examine the threats against it than Sandra Steingraber. Once called "a poet with a knife," she blends precise science with lyrical memoir. In Living Downstream she spoke as a biologist and cancer survivor; in Having Faith she spoke as an ecologist and expectant mother, viewing her own body as a habitat. Now she speaks as the scientist mother of two young children, enjoying and celebrating their lives while searching for ways to protect them -- and all children -- from the toxic, climate-threatened world they inhabit Each chapter of this engaging and unique book focuses on one inevitable ingredient of childhood -- everything from pizza to laundry to homework to the "Big Talk" -- and explores the underlying social, political, and ecological forces behind it. Through these everyday moments, Steingraber demonstrates how closely the private, intimate world of parenting connects to the public world of policy-making and how the ongoing environmental crisis is, fundamentally, a crisis of family life.

Book Father Elijah

  • Author : Michael D. O'Brien
  • Publisher : Ignatius Press
  • Release : 2009-10-27
  • ISBN : 1681491729

Download or read book Father Elijah written by Michael D. O'Brien and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2009-10-27 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael O'Brien presents a thrilling apocalyptic novel about the condition of the Roman Catholic Church at the end of time. It explores the state of the modern world, and the strengths and weaknesses of the contemporary religious scene, by taking his central character, Father Elijah Schäfer, a Carmelite priest, on a secret mission for the Vatican which embroils him in a series of crises and subterfuges affecting the ultimate destiny of the Church. Father Elijah is a convert from Judaism, a survivor of the Holocaust, a man once powerful in Israel. For twenty years he has been "buried in the dark night of Carmel" on the mountain of the prophet Elijah. The Pope and the Cardinal Secretary of State call him out of obscurity and give him a task of the highest sensitivity: to penetrate into the inner circles of a man whom they believe may be the Antichrist. Their purpose: to call the Man of Sin to repentance, and thus to postpone the great tribulation long enough to preach the Gospel to the whole world. In this richly textured tale, Father Elijah crosses Europe and the Middle East, moves through the echelons of world power, meets saints and sinners, presidents, judges, mystics, embattled Catholic journalists, faithful priests and a conspiracy of traitors within the very House of God. This is an apocalypse in the old literary sense, but one that was written in the light of Christian revelation.

Book Elijah in Jerusalem

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael D. O'Brien
  • Publisher : Ignatius Press
  • Release : 2015-10-05
  • ISBN : 1586179462
  • Pages : 284 pages

Download or read book Elijah in Jerusalem written by Michael D. O'Brien and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elijah in Jerusalem, the long awaited sequel to the acclaimed best-selling novel, Father Elijah: An Apocalypse , is the continuing story of the priest, Fr. Elijah. A convert from Judaism, and a survivor of the Holocaust, he has for decades been a Carmelite monk on the mountain of the prophet Elijah. In the events of the preceding novel, Father Elijah, the central character confronted the President of the European Union, a man rising toward global control as President of the soon to be realized World Government. The Pope recognized in the President certain qualities that are anti-Christ, and asked Fr. Elijah to call the man to repentance, though his attempts at this prove to be unsuccessful. In this sequel, now-Bishop Elijah, accompanied by his fellow monk Brother Enoch, enter Jerusalem just as the President arrives in the city to inaugurate a new stage of his rise to power. They hope to unmask him as the Antichrist prophesied by Scripture and to warn the world of the imminent spiritual danger to mankind. As the story unfolds, people of many kinds meet the undercover priest, and in the process their souls are revealed and tested, bringing about change for the good or for evil. Elijah perseveres in his mission even when all seems lost. The dramatic climax is surprising, yet it underlines that God works all things to the good for those who love Him, testifying to the truth that in the end Wisdom will be justified and Satan confounded.

Book Telling the Little Secrets

Download or read book Telling the Little Secrets written by Janet Handler Burstein and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2006-03-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Janet Burstein argues that American Jewish writers since the 1980s have created a significant literature by wrestling with the troubled legacy of trauma, loss, and exile. Their ranks include Cynthia Ozick, Todd Gitlin, Art Spiegelman, Pearl Abraham, Aryeh Lev Stollman, Jonathan Rosen, and Gerda Lerner. Whether confronting the massive losses of the Holocaust, the sense of “home” in exile, or the continuing power of Jewish memory, these Jewish writers search for understanding within “the little secrets” of their dark, complicated, and richly furnished past.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1, Martin Luther University, language: English, abstract: Introduction "He writes like he talks and talks like he writes" Although the cruelties people of Europe had to suffer from during the early decades of the 20th century, when Adolf Hitler began to establish his Nazi-regime, are part of a sad and dark chapter in German history, the aftermaths of the Rassengesetze, the war itself and the concentration camps are still shaking the minds of those who are faced with this issue during their studies, as well as the memories and lives of the people which either had to live according to the ideologies of the Third Reich and experience the tortures and pain the Nazis had brought upon them, or belong to the younger generation of those people's descendants. Thane Rosenbaum himself is one of them, a member of the generation whose parents had been there, had to live during the Third Reich and had survived the Holocaust. During the tenor of this work the author, Thane Rosenbaum, shall be introduced and his novel-in-stories Elijah Visible will be analyzed with the help of three selected short stories; the structure of the complete novel and connections between single stories will be illustrated.
