Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophets: Elijah to Christ And with only a few minutes each day for quiet thinking, may hope in time to make his way through this large portion of the Biblical world. Owing to the vast areas of thought and of life to be traversed, the teacher can hope merely to suggest a perspective and a starting point for each study, as well as a path Of approach, and then leave the thoughtful student to complete the survey. The aim throughout must be, not to raise critical questions, still less to solve them, but to show the heart and the life of each man, largely from a single point Of view, and to sound forth at least a portion of his message to the modern world. Book Elisha the Man of God Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elisha the Man of God Classic Reprint written by R. Clarence Dodds and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elisha the Man of God IN No character of the Bible, perhaps, is the life of Jesus, the son of God, so perfectly mirrored as in Elisha, the man of God. His gentleness Of spirit and holiness of life; the patience and faithfulness which must have char acterized his teaching; and, above all, the marvelous and beneficent character of his miraculous deeds; were a prophecy in actual life of him who spake as never man spake, who went about doing good; and whose miracles proclaimed him to be the Son Of God with power. The desire to direct the attention of students of the word of God with deeper interest to the beautiful and Christ-like character of the son of Shaphat, and thus incite to greater holiness Of life, a more perfect consecration to the service of God, has led to the preparation of these chapters. The aim has been to make due acknowledgment, in the proper place, of authors and works quoted from. It seems proper however, that special mention should be made Of the His tory of Elisha, by Dr. Krummacher; Lectures on History of Elisha, by Rev. Henry Blunt; The Prophet Elisha, by John M. Lowrie, D. D Elisha the Prophet, by Alfred Edersheim, D. D.; the Pulpit Commentary; and Lange's Commentary. R. C. D. Lansing, Mich January I, 1904. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elijah Vindicated: Or the Answer by Fire The author, believing that the contest waged on Carl mel in the days of Elijah the Tishbite between the Baalim and the Personal God of Israel is still going on, sends forth the present work with the prayer that the God who answers by fire will attend it in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, and use it to promote the glory of his name, and extend the triumphs of his Son. No one, we are persuaded, will blame the largeness of the prayer who knows that God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to con found the wise, and the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty and that it is not by might, nor by power, but by his Spirit. His purpose was to de vote himself to mercantile plirsuits, and at an early age he entered the service of a brother-in-law, then at the head of a large and flourishing establishment. He had unusual Qualifications for this walk Of life, and, had be devoted him self to it, would doubtless have' attained both eminence and fortune. Book The Lives and Ministries of Elijah and Elisha

Download or read book The Lives and Ministries of Elijah and Elisha written by Dr Kaiser, Jr and published by Messianic Jewish Resources & Publishers. This book was released on 2019-07 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elijah and Elisha are among the earliest and most influential prophets of Israel. They were both used to call Israel and Judah back to the Lord. Yet, their impact extended far beyond the boundaries of Israel in both space and time, impacting other nations and later times. Their stories form the framework of 1 and 2 Kings. Additionally, their accounts also inform and shape later Jewish biblical and religious texts. Quite significantly, the Elijah-Elisha historical pattern plays an important role in the structure and substance of the texts of the Gospels. Important people are pictured against the background of these two key figures in Israel's history. Not only that, but the Elijah-Elisha narrative serves as part of the structure of key sections of the Gospels, themselves. Welcome to the adventure of exploring these key figures-- Elijah and Elisha--with Dr. Walter C. Kaiser. Enjoy!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Elisha Now, I am sorry to believe that any child can be so unfeeling and wicked, as to treat his parents with disrespect. But I am afraid there are many such. I have known some children who did not confide in their parents, or consult them about any of their plans or pursuits. They disregarded their advice, and diso beyed their commands. Nay, I have even heard of some who had so little sense of what is right and becoming, as to use unkind and insolent lan guage to a father or a mother. Book The Return of Elijah to Our Earth Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Return of Elijah to Our Earth Classic Reprint written by William Baldwin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Return of Elijah to Our Earth It is written in Malachi, "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse." This could not have had its complete fulfillment in John the Baptist, for he was to go before our Lord in the spirit and power of Elias. John the Baptist was an Elijah in spirit, (Luke i. 16, 17, ) but not the literal Elijah; whence, when asked, "Art thou Elias?" (John i. 21) he answered, "I am not. Art thou that prophet? No." This implies that John, though knowing from the angel's announcement to his father that he was referred to by Malachi iv.5 (Luke i. 17), whence he wore the costume of Elijah, yet knew by inspiration that he did not exhaustively fulfill all that is included in this prophecy: that there is a further fulfillment. Even after the transfiguration (Matt. xvii. 11) Jesus speaks of Elijah's coming "to restore all things" as still future, though He adds that "Elijah (in the person of John the Baptist) is come already a sense" (Jamieson-FaussetBrown Commentary). There is a still further comment to the effect that the coming of Christ, being gracious in its character, could not well be designated a day "dreadful."
