Book Christ on Trial

    Book Details:
  • Author : Klass Schilder
  • Publisher : Sovereign Grace Publishers,
  • Release : 2001-11
  • ISBN : 1589602536
  • Pages : 548 pages

Download or read book Christ on Trial written by Klass Schilder and published by Sovereign Grace Publishers,. This book was released on 2001-11 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These superb works are without equal in modern literature. Schilder ''brings the reader into touch with the spiritual and temporal forces which converged during the Passion Week. He is careful to keep Christ central, and he blends in a masterful way this culmination of our Lord's earthly life with historical facts and psychological realities'' (Cyril Barber, The Minister's Library). Schilder was a noted Dutch scholar of the early twentieth century. The three volumes of this work were translated by Henry Zylstra. They first appeared in 1937. The three volumes cover three aspects of the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus Christ. They are entitled: Christ Crucified, Christ in His Suffering, and, Christ On Trial. In The Minister's Library, Cyril Barber states: ''Theologically accurate, abounds in suggestive insights, and provides exegetical illumination for a score of Easter sermons. It is a classic treatment on the passion of Christ. [It} deserves a place in every pastor's library. [The three volumes} cover the night of His betrayal to His condemnation . . . [it is] a learned, accurate treatment.'' That says a lot about this unique, very important work. It is simply indispensable to the understanding and feeling of the power of the passion of Christ. To put it into the words of the Apostle Paul, all should feel as he did, ''[Oh that I might] ''be found in Him . . . to know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, having been conformed to His death, if somehow I may attain to a resurrection out of the dead'' (Philippians 3:9-11). Through the guidance and inspiration of God the Holy Spirit Schilder has captured the drama and the pathos of Christ's ordeal, and yet also passes on to the reader the triumph and the exultation of Christ as He completes His voluntary submission to the Father's will: ''Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but You prepared a body for Me. You did not delight in burnt offering and sacrifices concerning sins. Then I said, Lo, I come in the heading of the Book it was written concerning Me, to do Your will, O God'' (Psalm 39:6-9; Heb. 10:5-7). No child of God is completely mature until he or she has gone to Gethsemane and followed the trail of Christ as He approached the hour when He must endure unspeakable humiliation, pain, and the suffering of momentary loss of the Father's presence with Him. It is no wonder that He sweat blood at the prospect, for He was not ignorant of what He must go through in order to provide salvation for His sheep: ''The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep'' (John 10:11). No one will better draw you down to the depths of this drama, a scene which only one Person could have endured, than Schilder. You will not be the same after you have followed Christ through these stirring looks that Schilder gives you - you will be a better Christian, by far. This is a Best Set in Print. Schilder was a man of many gifts, without any doubt. Anyone who has read his writings, even some of them, will readily acknowledge that he possessed the ability to look at various theological questions in different ways and to express his ideas in sometimes eloquent ways which were often fresh and new. 548 pages, blue hard cover

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. H. Rondel Rumburg has written a definitive work of the soul sufferings of Christ. In a day of shallow, sentimental, and lame theology, where humanistic and unscriptural depictions of Christ and His sufferings abound on every hand, Dr. Rumburg has brought forth a volume that extols Christ, describes the greatness of His sufferings and brings us to a greater understanding of His sacrifice. In this book, we do indeed "Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). We behold not only His Person but also His sufferings. We behold Him from the Old Testament and into the New Testament. We behold the prophecies and the fulfillment of the prophecies. We see that as great as His physical sufferings were, His spiritual or soul sufferings were the greatest of His sufferings. Every Christian can quickly and easily discuss His trial, scourging, humiliation and crucifixion. The question remains to be asked: "How many can even faintly discuss our Lord's soul sufferings?" Dr. Rumburg's book is a must read for every pastor, deacon, officer and Christian. We must know everything that we can concerning our wonderful Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and especially as it relates to His suffering on our behalf.

Book An Explanation of the History of the Suffering and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ

Download or read book An Explanation of the History of the Suffering and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ written by Johann Gerhard and published by Repristination Press. This book was released on 2019-07-02 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the most significant theologian of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the 17th century, the life and work of Johann Gerhard are known throughout the Western Church. Whether through writing weighty works such as his "Loci Theologici" or devotional books such as his "Daily Exercise of Piety," Gerhard's significance as a theologian has endured across the centuries.Johann Gerhard's concern as a theologian was, above all, pastoral, and this concern is reflected in his numerous devotional books and sermon collections. Gerhard's "An Explanation of the History of the Suffering and Death of our Lord Jesus Christ" leads the reader through the prototypes and prophesies of the Old Testament pointing forward to Christ's suffering and death. The work is divided into two introductory sermons and five 'acts' (I. In the Garden, II. At the Home of Caiaphas, III. Before Pilate, IV. Christ's Crucifixion, and V. Christ's Burial) for a total of 24 sermons. However, readers will find that this books is far from "just another book of sermons"-Gerhard's profound depth of knowledge of Holy Scripture and his ability to draw together the Old Testament prototypes with their fulfillment in Christ combine to make this work a true blessing.

Book Suffering in Ancient Worldview

Download or read book Suffering in Ancient Worldview written by Brian J. Tabb and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suffering in Ancient Worldview investigates representative Christian, Roman Stoic and Jewish perspectives on the nature, problem and purpose of suffering. Tabb presents a close reading of Acts, Seneca's essays and letters and 4 Maccabees, highlighting how each author understands suffering vis-à-vis God, humanity, the world's problem and its solution, and the future. Tabb's study offers a pivotal definition for suffering in the 1st century and concludes by creatively situating these ancient authors in dialogue with each other. Tabb shows that, despite their different religious and cultural positions, these ancient authors each expect and accept suffering as a present reality that is governed by divine providence, however defined. Luke, Seneca and the author of 4 Maccabees each affirm that suffering is not humanity's fundamental problem. Rather, suffering functions as a cipher for other things to be displayed. For Seneca, suffering provides an opportunity for one to learn and show virtue. The author of 4 Maccabees presents the nation's suffering as retribution for sin, while the martyrs' virtuous suffering leads to Israel's salvation. For Luke, the Lord Jesus suffers to accomplish salvation and restoration for the world marred by sin and suffering, and the suffering of his followers is instrumental for Christian mission.
