Book excerpt: When an ex-warrior farmer is awakened in the middle of the night by a giant away-bird with a golden basket pinched in its beak, the quiet life Derrin struggled so hard to achieve is unsettled in an instant, driving him right back into warrior mode once again. When he and his wife Ilsa, and his young son Bren open the basket, inside is a newborn elf with the royal symbol of Castle Royann hanging around her tiny neck; two silver bars side by side in the shape of a downwards-pointing sword. Derrin is completely stunned because he knows an elf princess hasn't been born in a thousand years, and she is bound to have immense power at her disposal, whatever this unknown power may be. When Derrin learns that the Kingdom of Royann has been frozen within a malevolent bubble of time by a demonic entity known only as the Omni Lord, he quickly figures out he must raise the elf princess in secrecy until her power is strong enough to defeat this demon, thus hopefully freeing her elven people from their icy state, including her real mother and father Queen Alora and King Heron. The elf princess is given the name Kaylee, and as she matures into a fierce warrior, she knows she is clearly different, for her strength and agility far exceeds even that of her older brother Bren, who has also been training alongside her to better protect the village of Braven -- an unofficial lookout post long forgotten by the elves. Yet another reason why Kaylee must keep her true identity a secret. For years, Braven and Castle Royann have been locked in a fierce dispute over security wages owed, so the village has never held much love for the elves. The already complicated situation gets even more dire when Kaylee learns that she must seek out a council with the Four Witches of the Elements deep within the eastern Kingdom of Kipengel to better learn how to defeat the Omni Lord. No easy task to be sure, since the witches and the elves have been sworn enemies for thousands of years, not to mention the witches live within an enchanted forest that harbors many dangers, and they ride essence dragons that allow them to control the elements at will -- lightning and earth, fire and ice. Can Kaylee convince the witches to help her in the fight against the Omni Lord that is sure to come, thus gaining the trust of Braven in turn? And, just what is this immense power she was born with that makes the Omni Lord want to claim it all for himself? Find out when you read this action-packed fantasy from Edward Primm. Edward Primm also writes under the pseudonyms Edward Costa for Mysteries and General Fiction (GIRL ON DEATH ROW), and Edward Marion for his Americana Fantasy novels (HARRY'S DOOR).

Download or read book Harry s Door written by Edward Marion and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-11-28 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best described as an Americana Fantasy, HARRY'S DOOR is set amidst the dusty back roads of 1933 Nebraska during The Great Depression. This touching, yet humorous tale involves a down-and-out young man named Harry Middleman, who can't seem to let the spirit of his deceased wife Bethany go and just move on with his life without her. Anytime he sets up their old house door he keeps stored in the back of his vintage truck, Beth walks right through it, always encouraging him to never give up on his big dream of starting his own irrigation business, even though the Midwest has been plagued with drought for several months. This of course complicates Beth's main mission to wean Harry off of her so she can go on up to Heaven where she belongs, but Harry is having none of it. He still needs his beloved Beth more than life itself and will never be ready to let go of her, no matter how hard she tries to convince him otherwise. Beth soon devises a clever master plan to utilize an old ghost town to her advantage by filing it up with many strange and wonderful characters who will be essential to Harry's future success and happiness, including an ornery fourteen-year-old tomboy named Savanna, who can outwit and out-swing anyone twice her age. Things get further complicated when a mysterious angel with dove-like wings appears, clearly harboring a hidden agenda of her own. Strange thing is, the angel looks an awful lot like Beth, but she doesn't speak at all, and can only communicate with crude wall drawings that come to life. When Harry's enchanted door suddenly closes on its own and locks the angel out of Heaven, it only frustrates him even further as to what his is supposed to do here to make this dire situation right. Add in one simpleton conman named Nigel, who attempts to use the angel's healing powers to his advantage, and one angry schoolteacher named Mrs. Langley, who believes the angel is here to initiate the Apocalypse, and Harry is left scratching his foggy head in more ways than one. Will poor Harry figure out how to unlock his stubborn door and send the angel on home where she belongs, and will he also find the courage to let Beth's spirit go in the process? Experience the amazing wonders of HARRY'S DOOR to find out.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over a half century, a small Indiana town hosts a circus troupe during the off-seasons in linked stories “as graceful as any acrobat’s high-wire act” (San Francisco Chronicle). A Story Prize Finalist From 1884 to 1939, the Great Porter Circus made the unlikely choice to winter in an Indiana town called Lima, a place that feels as classic as Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio, and as wondrous as a first trip to the Big Top. In Lima, an elephant can change the course of a man's life—or the manner of his death. Jennie Dixianna entices men with her dazzling Spin of Death and keeps them in line with secrets locked in a cedar box. The lonely wife of the show’s manager has each room of her house painted like a sideshow banner, indulging her desperate passion for a young painter. And a former clown seeks consolation from his loveless marriage in his post-circus job at Clown Alley Cleaners. In this collection of linked stories spanning decades, Cathy Day follows the circus people into their everyday lives and brings the greatest show on earth to the page. “[An] exquisite story collection.” —The Washington Post “Often funny, always graceful, and rich with a mix of historical and imaginative detail.” —Tim O’Brien, author of The Things They Carried “Sublimely imaginative and affecting.” —The Boston Globe

Book Clay Water Brick

Download or read book Clay Water Brick written by Jessica Jackley and published by Random House. This book was released on 2015-06-23 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of Kabul Beauty School and Start Something That Matters comes an inspiring story of social entrepreneurship from the co-founder of Kiva, the first online microlending platform for the working poor. Featuring lessons learned from successful businesses in the world’s poorest countries, Jessica Jackley’s Clay Water Brick will motivate readers to more deeply appreciate the incredible entrepreneurial potential that exists in every human being on this planet—especially themselves. “The heart of entrepreneurship is never about what we have. It’s about what we do.” Meet Patrick, who had next to nothing and started a thriving business using just the ground beneath his feet . . . Blessing, who built her shop right in the middle of the road, refusing to take the chance that her customers might pass her by . . . Constance, who cornered the banana market in her African village with her big personality and sense of mission. Patrick, Blessing, Constance, and many others are among the poorest of the world’s poor. And yet they each had crucial lessons to teach Jessica Jackley—lessons about resilience, creativity, perseverance, and, above all, entrepreneurship. For as long as she could remember, Jackley, the co-founder of the revolutionary microlending site Kiva, had a singular and urgent ambition: to help alleviate global poverty. While in her twenties, she set off for Africa to finally meet the people she had long dreamed of helping. The insights of those she met changed her understanding. Today she believes that many of the most inspiring entrepreneurs in the world are not focused on high-tech ventures or making a lot of money; instead, they wake up every day and build better lives for themselves, their families, and their communities, regardless of the things they lack or the obstacles they encounter. As Jackley puts it, “The greatest entrepreneurs succeed not because of what they possess but because of what they are determined to do.” In Clay Water Brick, Jackley challenges readers to embrace entrepreneurship as a powerful force for change in the world. She shares her own story of founding Kiva with little more than a laptop and a dream, and the stories and the lessons she has learned from those across the globe who are doing the most with the least. Praise for Clay Water Brick “Jessica Jackley didn’t wait for permission to change the world—she just did it. It turns out that you can too.”—Seth Godin, author of What to Do When It’s Your Turn “Fascinating . . . gripping . . . bursting with lessons . . . Jessica Jackley has written a remarkable book . . . so thoroughly well meaning and engagingly put it is too magnetic to put down.”—Financial Times “Clay Water Brick is a tremendously inspiring read. Jessica Jackley, the virtuoso co-founder of the revolutionary microlending platform Kiva, shares uplifting stories and compelling lessons on entrepreneurship, resilience, and character.”—Adam Grant, author of Give and Take “A blueprint for anyone who wants to make the world a better place and find fulfillment in the process, no matter how scarce their resources or how steep the challenge.”—Arianna Huffington “This book is inspirational. And honest and practical. . . . Well written, thoughtful: a selfless account of how to succeed by doing right and following your heart.”—Booklist
