Book Cities and Their Vital Systems

Download or read book Cities and Their Vital Systems written by Advisory Committee on Technology and Society and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 1298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities and Their Vital Systems asks basic questions about the longevity, utility, and nature of urban infrastructures; analyzes how they grow, interact, and change; and asks how, when, and at what cost they should be replaced. Among the topics discussed are problems arising from increasing air travel and airport congestion; the adequacy of water supplies and waste treatment; the impact of new technologies on construction; urban real estate values; and the field of "telematics," the combination of computers and telecommunications that makes money machines and national newspapers possible.

Book The Primary Creep Behavior of Single Crystal Nickel Base Superalloys PWA 1480 and PWA 1484

Download or read book The Primary Creep Behavior of Single Crystal Nickel Base Superalloys PWA 1480 and PWA 1484 written by Brandon Charles Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Qualitative TEM analysis revealed that PWA 1484 deformed by large dislocation "ribbons" spanning large regions of material. PWA 1480, however, deformed primarily due to matrix dislocations and the creation of interfacial dislocation networks between the [gamma] and [gamma]' phases. PWA 1480+ contained stacking faults as well, though they acted on multiple slip systems generating work hardening and forcing the onset of secondary creep. Xray diffraction and JMatPro calculations were also used to gain insight into the cause of the differences in behaviors.

Book Role of Environment in Elevated Temperature Crack Growth Behavior of Ren N4 Single Crystal

Download or read book Role of Environment in Elevated Temperature Crack Growth Behavior of Ren N4 Single Crystal written by M. Khobaib and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustained load creep and fatigue crack growth tests have been conducted over a temperature range of 870 to 1038°C for single-crystal (SC) Renè N4 nickel-base superalloy.Tests were conducted in both laboratory air and an inert environment of a vacuum of 10-5 torr under similar conditions to understand the role of environment in elevated temperature crack growth behavior of this material. Mini-compact tension type specimens were fabricated with orientation [001] parallel to the loading axis and [100] direction parallel to the crack growth direction. The creep crack growth rate in laboratory air at 870°C was found to be nearly an order of magnitude higher as compared to tests conducted in a vacuum of 10-5 torr. However, in fatigue at a stress ratio of 0.1 and a frequency of 1.0 Hz, the crack growth rate was found to be somewhat higher in vacuum as compared to growth rates obtained from tests in laboratory air. A number of constant K tests were conducted with different frequencies of 0.1 and 0.01 Hz and several hold-times to investigate the time-dependent effects. Fractographic studies of the fatigue crack growth specimens tested in laboratory air and vacuum did not show any distinct differences in failure mechanism. However, interdendritic failure was observed for creep specimens tested in laboratory air, while the fracture surface obtained from vacuum tests showed crystallographic features.

Book Crystal Plasticity Study of Heterogeneous Deformation Behavior in Matrix Channels During High Temperature Low Stress Creep of Single Crystal Superalloys

Download or read book Crystal Plasticity Study of Heterogeneous Deformation Behavior in Matrix Channels During High Temperature Low Stress Creep of Single Crystal Superalloys written by Avinash Hariharan and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Single crystal nickel-based superalloys have high temperature creep resistance due to particle strengthening by high volume fraction of coherent ? precipitates distributed within nickel-based solid solution ? matrix. In the high temperature low stress regime, published experimental studies reveal that the creep deformation mechanism during the secondary stage is predominantly by dislocation glide in the ? matrix only, and that there is a preferential motion of dislocations in the matrix, oriented in a direction perpendicular to the stress. In this work, the crystal plasticity finite element method is employed to perform creep simulations on a representative volume element in the high temperature and low stress regime. A sine-hyperbolicbased material creep model was used for the matrix, while the precipitates are assumed to be elastic. A softening model incorporating the evolution of mobile dislocation density was used to capture the transition from secondary to tertiary creep. The predicted creep curves agree well with the published experimental measurements on single crystal superalloy CMSX-4. The simulations predict a higher creep strain distribution in the horizontal channel of the matrix (perpendicular to the applied stress) as compared with the vertical channel (horizontal to the applied stress). Local creep strain distributions in the channels were found to be greater than twice their average creep strain. The results provide key insights into the distribution of macroscopic creep strain in the local channels of the ? matrix to further aid in the microstructural design of creep-resistant superalloys.
