Whereas previous studies have emphasized the structure of the Chinese characters, this pathbreaking dictionary places primary emphasis on the sounds and meanings of Sinitic roots. Based on more than three decades of intensive investigation in primary and secondary sources, this completely new dictionary places Old Chinese squarely within the Sino-Tibetan language family (including close consideration of numerous Tiberto-Burman languages), while paying due regard to other language families such as Austroasiatic, Miao-Yao (Hmong-Mien), and Kam-Tai. Designed for use by nonspecialists and specialists alike, the dictionary is highly accessible, being arranged in alphabetical order and possessed of numerous innovative lexicographical features. However, as Chinese numerals are closely associated with classifiers with which to form numeral-classifier compounds, they can only be fully understood when they are studied together with Chinese classifiers. Chinese classifiers are a very difficult problem for foreign learners to tackle, though it is not difficult to translate them into English. The fact that Chinese classifiers are difficult to master is because it concerns the usage peculiar to Chinese, but it doesn’t prevent foreign learners from understanding the meaning of the Chinese classifiers. What is difficult for them is how to use them correctly in their translation from E to C. The aim of this book is to tell the learners how to use Chinese classifiers correctly. In order to help the foreign learners to learn Chinese classifiers more handily and correctly, Appendix I: Classification of Chinese action classifiers and Appendix II: a detailed List of combination of Chinese classifiers and nouns, with more than 800 examples, are provided in this book.

Old Chinese is the language of the earliest Chinese classical texts (1st millennium BCE) and the ancestor of later varieties of Chinese, including all modern Chinese dialects. William Baxter and Laurent Sagart's new reconstruction of Old Chinese moves beyond earlier reconstructions by taking into account important new evidence that has recently become available: better documentation of Chinese dialects that preserve archaic features, such as the Min and Waxiang dialects; better documentation of languages with very early loanwords from Chinese, such as the Hmong-Mien, Tai-Kadai and Vietnamese languages; and a flood of Chinese manuscripts from the first millennium BCE, excavated or discovered in the last several decades. Baxter and Sagart also incorporate recent advances in our understanding of the derivational processes that connect different words that have the same root. In particular, the economy in the areas south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River gained rapid progress and the development level of agriculture, the handicraft industry and commerce in these areas was unprecedented. The Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties were times of great elegance and beauty. Various minds of arts and craft. including jade articles, tri-coloured glazed pottery. porcelain. painting calligraphy, stone carving and sculpture achieved peaks in their respective development history, which was really a great wonder. This book, the fifth in a ten-volume collection, brings to the English-speaking world a series of books from China which has been complied by an Expert Committee of the Chinese Society of Cultural Relics.
